Reading Nick Mason's book has got me into the Syd-era stuff again.

"Soon after dark, Emily cries...."

I love it!
ToT was sort of a diversion for them, and is easily their heaviest album with basically no ballads to speak of.

If you ever get a chance to hear the album Metropolis pt2: Scenes From a Memory, give it a burl because it reminds me of Pink Floyd alot.
Ill check it out sometime, I loved Train Of Thought.

MattSharpIsCool 01-10-2007 03:21 AM

Dream Theater did a cover of Dark Side of the Moon. I'm trying to find it on Soulseek, but the only one I can find has no host at the moment.

I'm also trying to find that Metropolis album, but it's the same deal.

Is the album "Scenes From a Memory" the same thing? Because soulseek is telling me it is.

EDIT: Nevermind, it is, god bless wikipedia.

Riva 01-10-2007 05:16 AM

It's called Metropolis Pt 2: Scenes From A Memory I believe.

And Images And Words sounds a bit like Pink Floyd. I used to be really into Dream Theater, not so much now.

LF96 01-10-2007 07:23 AM

Imogene sounds a bit like Pink Floyd (they're pretty similar to Porcupine Tree). Some of the softer songs by Opeth give me a Pink Floyd feel as well, though they sound way more depressed than anything Floyd ever did.

Jim 01-11-2007 12:19 AM

With Scenes From a Memory, it's really the ballads that remind me so much of Floyd, particularly the Waters era. The Spirit Carries On could have easily been on The Wall.

And I love ToT too rippa, it's my favourite :p

But this is a Pink Floyd thread, so I will discontinue this comment immediately!

rippa32 01-11-2007 12:37 AM

lol Fair enough. Does anybody know where I can get some stuff with Snowy White on it? Hes playing with Roger on the show im seeing. Isnt he?

Jim 01-11-2007 12:51 AM

According to his website he is. I don't know about any recordings by him though =/ This site may help

Bit messy looking but it looks like it's all there :p

Collis 01-11-2007 07:22 AM

Thanks for the Wright, Waters and Barrett albums on the DU Riva; not got around to listening to The Madcap Laughs yet but the other two are great.

Riva 01-11-2007 07:28 AM

No worries mate. Yeah, Broken China is a great album.

rippa32 01-11-2007 11:43 PM

I gotta get Piper At The Gates of Dawn sometime as well. So many floyd albums to get. Its gonna be a real shame when I have them all.

Danger Bird 01-11-2007 11:45 PM

I'd get relics right after piper.

Dr. Jake Destructo 01-11-2007 11:59 PM

LOL @ people comparing modern bands with Pink Floyd.

Shpongle is the modern day Pink Floyd. Flutes instead of guitars though.

Amit 01-12-2007 12:19 AM

i don't think shpongle is :-X

Amit 01-12-2007 12:23 AM

Hey Atman, I remember you saying that you enjoyed some acoustic folk albums that I sent you, and I'm wondering if you're interested in hearing some more? I have a great acoustic folk album that you might like.

Interested?

magicbus 01-12-2007 12:25 AM

Yea I agree. I don't think there is a modern Floyd right now. And the closest thing to it would be a "standard band lineup" (guitar, bass, drums, vocals, maybe keyboards) that plays atmospheric/spacy music.

So name me some of those, and I might agree, but I don't listen to many modern bands like that.

Amit 01-12-2007 12:31 AM

tbh there's a lot more fascinating stuff out now than to be worried about bands emulating sounds from over three decades ago

magicbus 01-12-2007 12:34 AM

Yea true, but I just came in here reading about Shpongle being like Floyd, and I don't think that's really accurate.

Amit 01-12-2007 12:37 AM

yeah i don't agree either

MattSharpIsCool 01-12-2007 12:40 AM

Gwen Stefani.

Yield 01-12-2007 10:08 PM

I just finished watching The Wall Live in Berlin. That's a really great concert. I like how they performed The Trial, but some of the songs they did were just a little silly

For example: Cindy Lauper

rippa32 01-12-2007 10:26 PM

Cindy Lauper? Oh dear god, what did she sing?

Yield 01-12-2007 10:30 PM

Another Brick In The Wall, Part 2

It wasn't that bad, just too funny to take it seriously
...i guess it was that bad

I just listened to Animals for the first time in ages. Pigs (3 Different Ones) and Sheep are such wonderful songs. I'd forgotten how much I liked it.
