I think the album as a whole is amazing. "Shine On..." sandwiches three incredible tracks.
Was just reading a bit on that album in Wikipedia:
Barrett hadn't been seen by any of the band members in five years. He arrived unannounced, his head completely devoid of hair (including eyebrows, as alluded to in The Wall film) and had put on so much weight that most of the band did not recognise him at first. Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley (who was a guest at Gilmour's wedding reception) mistook him for a Hare Krishna devotee.
Sad, but still sort of funny. |
i beg to differ. welcome to the machine is a real cool song. i really like of the songs really. but i suppose its a matter of opinion.
Agreed. It's all a matter of opinion. With that in mind, I also think when it comes to a favorite album, especially by Pink Floyd, I'd have to say it all depends on what you like and how it helped/magnified certian things in life that you were going through at a particular time within a "phase". Reflecting back on those memories always brings back certain albums, songs, artists, etc etc. For me, Wish You Were Here was it. It holds a special place in my mind that will never be replaced. :) |

Couldn't agree more. "You can take a picture of new york and one person looking at will think it looks really depressing, frightening and someone else will look at it and think of all the fun things you can do in new york. I think songs are kind of like that." you guys have all probably seen this but I watched it for the first time just now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F94vHO7okZQ |
I guess I just really enjoy how Darkside and The Wall are like one long cohesive song, whereas WYWH is just a collection of pop songs. There's nothing wrong with that, and like I said, I do like the album. To me, it just doesn't stand out like some of their others.
|
I really enjoyed Dark Side Of The Moon when I was growing up, I don't know what intriqued me so much about Pink Floyd, everyone else in 7th grade was listening to Black Sabbath, Slayer, Prong etc. So yeah, I got a LOT of **** in school because of Dark Side Of The Moon, before it was whored on the radio. I didn't care though. I just got really burned out on it after listening to it constantly for years, yet I still like it. On the other hand, The Wall is excellent. A lot of memories coincide along with that piece I won't deny it, good and bad memories from my youth buried in that album. Good stuff. :)
|
Wish You Were Here is my favourite, with Dark Side of The Moon a close second. I don't particularly like The Wall.
|
the wall is definitely different from the others as far as content. ive heard a lot of pink floyd fans say they didnt like the wall. i do though, i think its pretty good.
has anyone here listened to the pros and cons of hitchhiking album by roger waters? that ones pretty good too. |
I'm not really a huge fan of Roger's solo stuff.
Which is a little strange because I really enjoy The Final Cut, and that's pretty much a Roger solo album. |
I still think The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was their best album.
Meddle and Ummagumma are also favorites of mine. |
I'd probably go with the masses and say that Dark Side is my favorite album, it is one of those records that I could listen to in any mood or for any amount of times, and still be astounded after Eclipse has finished, everytime. Animals is probably my second favorite ...
|
I still think The Piper at the Gates of Dawn was their best album.
I won't totally agree with that, but it's definately in my top 3, most people that I know didn't think that that was actually pink floyd(they only have heard dsotm, and wuwh) yeah but the wall will always be my favourite |
Meddle, Darkside and Animals are all too close to call as my favourite. After those three I'd say WYWH and OBC come next.
|
Yeah, same for me leper. Those 3 albums are definately their 3 best IMO. WYWH is also a close fourth place. Pipers and Saucerful of Secrets are also early gems for Floyd.
|
I would absolutely love Piper and SOS if they were a little more consistent. The good songs on those albums are definitely some of their best work.
|
did you like the division bell?
|
I didnt too much :\
|
Division Bell sounds to me like Pink Floyd imitating its own 70s sound, but not as good. Which I think is what it is.
|
That's what old bands do, unless they're King Crimson.
|
As much as I love The Wall and Animals after listening to them I feel as though I've just watched a really deep movie so even though they are favourites they don't get played all that often.
|
yeah I know that feeling, but I could never describe it to my friends, it's really deep
|
did you like the division bell?
Actually I've never heard it... |
don't even bother, it's just pathetic.
|
Well, not entirely, it has got some good tracks on it. But if you don't like David's solo work, you won't like The Division Bell, since Mason and Wright contributed almost nothing to it.
And I play The Wall and Animals all the time. I guess even though they haven't lost their magic, the actual message behind them doesn't effect me as much. Iunno. |
Rick Wright co-wrote a majority of the songs on The Division Bell. How did he not contribute anything to the album?
The post-Waters albums have grown on me quite a bit. They're still nowhere near being my favorites, but I can definitely listen to them and enjoy it. |

I haven't heard any of David's solo work besides "On an Island" which I thought was alright.
|
On An Island wasn't too bad at all
|

And you have to admit The Division Bell is a lot like a Gilmour solo album. Music- and lyric-wise. Rick also co-wrote parts of On An Island also, though. |
Post-Waters is definitely listenable ... and High Hopes is one of my favorite Floyd songs, ever. The Pulse version is just sooooo good :)
|
Ok, so who thinks David wrote Poles Apart about Roger? I used to think it was about Syd, but re-listening to the lyrics, it's more derisive or regretful than sorrowful, and he uses the line "Hey you" which puts me in mind of The Wall, mostly written by Roger, of course.
|
Everything after Dark Side was crap.
|
Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall... crap?
|
Yeah some of Pink Floyds music was written post-Darkside. WYWH and Animals are phenominal, but The Wall I don't care for to much. And I can enjoy a lot of the post-Waters Floyd.
|
Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall... crap?
Yeah. |
I'm not sure I agree with that, but ok, that's cool.
Any reason you don't like that stuff? |
Mostly because it sucks.
|
i think animals was their best album. but i get it, i bet youre one of those guys who likes syd barrett better than roger waters. so naturally youre gonna like their early sort of psychedelic stuff more than the later spacey stuff. yeah i completely disagree with you. where i love albums like more and obscured by clouds and saucerful of secrets. the darkside/wywh/animals time period was probably the best 3 album string of any bands career ever.

I like pretty much like any and all Floyd, at least to some extent But Dark Side, WYWH, Animals and The Wall have some of the sexiest guitar solos ever. |
So I just watched Pulse. Disc 2 at least, with all of Darkside, and the encore.
Comfortably Numb is awesome on that disc. |
How can you White boys listen to this stuff is crazy man
