Ummagumma and SoS are my favorites.

The end of the title track in SoS is so beautiful.

rippa32 01-07-2007 10:49 PM

Ok, the way itll turn out though is ill just get one or two of whats at the shop at the time.

Riva 01-07-2007 11:04 PM

Not Now John isn't boring, Rippa.

Oh, and you should definitely get More if you're going to get pre-Meddle stuff.

Danger Bird 01-07-2007 11:06 PM

More was meh compared to some other pre-meddle albums.

Riva 01-07-2007 11:11 PM

The first 6 songs on More are perfect, I think. It's just the more "soundtracky" songs that bring it down.

What albums do you prefer?

EDIT: Oh wait, Ummagumma and Saucerful Of Secrets, right?

Well, considering you've only got Atom Heart Mother in terms of the "Gilmour" sound studio albums, then there's not much choice, really.

And I'd rank it as Saucerful Of Secrets, More, and a tie for third between Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother.

Danger Bird 01-07-2007 11:24 PM

I'd go Ummagumma, Saucerful of Secrets, Piper, Atom Heart Mother, More

I don't hate More though.

Leper 01-07-2007 11:24 PM

I've only listened to Ummagumma once or twice, but I didn't really like it. Then again, I didn't really like Animals the first time I listened to it either, so maybe Ummagumma will grow on me.

Oh yeah thats a really good song. Its the only one that really stands out though, A Gunners Dream and that last song ive forgotten the name of isnt too bad but they still suffer from the poetry put to music thing imo.

MattSharpIsCool 01-08-2007 08:27 AM

I really need to give More a good listening to.

I got Nick Mason's Inside Out last night. I'm gonna start on it today. I already flipped through it and the pictures look awesome.

LF96 01-08-2007 11:04 AM

I was a bit disappointed with Saucerful Of Secrets. The studio versions of the title-track and Set The Controls are both rather boring if you ask me. The live versions of those that I have heard are MUCH better, especially for Saucerful.
The other songs are however cool, but I didn't have any high expectations for those, so they couldn't disappoint me as much.

rippa32 01-08-2007 04:48 PM

Well that's what you get for listening to them live first :thumb:

Seriously ive always noticed that the difference between live and studio tracks are more noticeable when you hear the live one first.

Danger Bird 01-08-2007 05:34 PM

^Wow, that's a really good point

magicbus 01-08-2007 05:37 PM

I think Saucerful is much better on Ummagumma. The studio doesn't have Gilmour's vocals at the end.

Yeah, I got WYWH and Animals at the same time, and at first I really liked WYWH a lot more the Animals. Now, it's the other way around, where I like Animals a lot more than WYWH.

Animals is my favorite :D

I started reading it and I liked it a lot, but I didn't have much time so I put it away somewhere. I'll probably get it out once I finish a couple of other books and finish some school work.

Jim 01-08-2007 11:17 PM

I hoped Mason would have devoted more of the book to the makings of The Wall and The Final Cut. You know, the real juicy bits! That would be my only (minor) gripe though.

Otherwise, I think it's a really great read. It helps explain so much of the history.

MattSharpIsCool 01-08-2007 11:58 PM

Did he even really play on The Final Cut? I thought Roger had a session drummer do pretty much the whole album.

Jim 01-09-2007 12:01 AM

As far as I know, a session drummer was only used on the closing track, Two Suns in the Sunset.

Skip to the chapter about The Final Cut. It'll probably provide answers there :smoke:

If you want a good view of the band during the Wall, buy Is There Anybody Out There? which is the live album of The Wall. It has terrific liner notes.

Amit 01-09-2007 04:00 AM

hi guys

other than porcupine tree

what other bands really give that pink floyd feel

Surf 01-09-2007 04:03 AM

Roger Waters' solo stuff?

He basically carried them through the animals - wall era so his solo stuff is just an extension of that. Amused to Death is his best album.

I don't know anyone else =/

Riva 01-09-2007 04:11 AM

Besides the solo stuff, I guess you could consider Riverside, and maybe the more spacey moments of the Ozric Tentacles, but you already know about them, Amit. >:)

Amit 01-09-2007 04:12 AM

yeah thanks jason i've heard both

i think floyd was at their absolute peak with animals

i just wish there was more stuff which expanded on that particular era

Riva 01-09-2007 04:20 AM

Have you heard Rick Wright's solo stuff, Amit?

I'm not sure of anything that matches Animals, but Rick Wright has some pretty cool stuff.

rippa32 01-09-2007 04:43 AM

Does Porcupine Tree really sound like floyd? From what ive heard (admittedly not alot) it didnt sound like them all that much.

Amit 01-09-2007 04:52 AM

stupid dream, lightbulb sun, and in absentia definitely gives me the same vibes as my favorite era of pink floyd does

Danger Bird 01-09-2007 08:10 AM

The Coffin Daggers do an awesome Interstellar Overdrive cover, but overall they don't sound that floydish.

Leper 01-09-2007 01:01 PM
hi guys

Radiohead. I consider them the Pink Floyd of today. They completely original but they still give me that kind of feel you're talking about.

Jim 01-10-2007 12:19 AM

If anyone's heard Dream Theater's The Spirit Carries On, they would instantly be reminded of the Floyd. It's a pretty blatent rip. It's all there - the vaguely familiar chord progression, the big female chorus', and of course, lead singer James Labrie doing his best Roger Waters impersonation.

Good song, but :smoke:

rippa32 01-10-2007 12:44 AM

Ive only heard one of their albums, Train Of Though and I found em too heavy to be compared to Pink Floyd. Of course theres always one-offs and whatnot im just speaking from my experiances with the band.

Jim 01-10-2007 01:02 AM

ToT was sort of a diversion for them, and is easily their heaviest album with basically no ballads to speak of.

If you ever get a chance to hear the album Metropolis pt2: Scenes From a Memory, give it a burl because it reminds me of Pink Floyd alot.
