The Baying Of The Hounds - 10:41 Beneath The Mire - 7:57 Atonement - 6:28 Reverie/Harlequin Forest - 11:39 Hours Of Wealth - 5:20 The Grand Conjuration - 10:21 Isolation years - 3:51 That's what I got.
Mine are exactly the same. Both Atonement and Reverie/Harlequin Forest cut off abruptly like Closure and Serenity Painted Death. We wont know if that's intentional until the official release comes out.So far: 1.Ghost of Perdition-Awesome.Most of you have heard it by now. 2.Baying of the Hounds-My favorite. So amazing.Flows together so good.It has such a great grove in the beginning.Totally headbangable. The first set of clean vocals feature a 3 part harmony. It goes off into a very trippy and somewhat creepy synth part.At first I thought it was "Beneath the Mire" because he says just that, "Beneath the Mire".But I'm certain it is Baying of the Hounds. It's the first lyric. The solo that comes in at 7 mins will make you cry(well, maybe not, but its still awesome). The acoustic part afterward sounds like the last acoustic section in Face of Melinda. 3.Beneath the Mire-Alot of synth.Sick *** intro.Preceded with the great growling we all came to love. Then it goes into clean vocals followed by a clean section.I'll tell you, this album features Mikael's best clean vocals IMO.He's developed quite a singing ability over the years. 4.Atonement-Fully soft track.Such a strange song.Very 60's like Det Notship said.Alot of piano playing.Has a great outro. 5.Reverie/Harlequin Forest-It's a heavy track with mostly clean vocals. But god they sound so awesome. The acoustic riffs are sooooooooooo freakin godly. The outro riff is reminicent of the outro riff on Deliverance.Only much more tricky. It has a crazy odd time signature to it. 6.Hours of Wealth-Another softy. It's such a meloncholy bleak song.Mikael basically sings acapella with a piano.I think the song is actually about a ghost reverie. It sounds like he's a ghost that gets illusions of being surrounded by people he knows and being home. But then he snaps out of it and realizes that he's actually far from home and alone.Never to talk or see anyone ever again.Really sad song. The keyboards add such a great beauty to the song. 7.The Grand Conjuration-You've all heard it.No need for review or description. 8.Isolation Years-This is the shortest song. It's the last of 3 full soft songs.Probably the best one. This one could have easily been on Damnation. No more Melinda, as the female subject is named Rosemary. This song sounds like a suicide note almost. It's the perfect way to cap off a perfect album. 10/10 Sorry for my blabbering. |

Every time I skim this thread, you're all making me turn to the downloading darkside. So, to help me resist temptation, Orchid, or MAYH next for me? |
As far as I've gathered from the lyrics, this is a concept album.. Isn't it?

(me:whoo!) **** news: your back in school, bitch (me: god dammit). Oh well. Im seeing them August 10th In Cologne (Koln), Germany since i live here. Its in a small venue too, not going to be in a crowd of thousands of people =D. I love Europe.

I think it might be....for example, the transition from Baying of the Hounds to Beneath the Mire. Fantastic record, though. For those of you who are waiting until the 30th...it will be worth it. For those of you who chose the darkside like me....I don't blame you. ;) This may be a little preemptive, but Ghost Reveries may be Opeth's best record to date. As far as what I like about the band, it has everything++. Oh, and it's NOSNIP. I don't know where people keep getting the Notship stuff from....my username is simply my real name (Ted Pinson) backwards. |
Ted Pishton! .. .. Ted Pissedon!. your new nickname.. Or not.
I still can't believe how much he changed his vocals for this album.. I didn't think he could become a better singer than he was on damnation.. But he proved me wrong |
Dam'n. I'm trying to download them on Lime wire but it says it needs more sources. :upset:

ESRB rating: AO for explict talk on new album.

After reading interveiws and everything, I was expecting it to be their best, but I was let down. Now don't get me wrong, it's really good, but it's just another Opeth album. It's very unlikely that it will ever surpass MR or BWP for me. I wanted a booming close to the album. I mean a punch children in the face kind of ending. Isolation Years is a nice song, but it doesn't seal the deal really. And I don't like the keys. I want ebow d*mnit! |
I somewhat agree with Det Nosnip.I wasn't even expecting this to be at the same calibur of SL or BWP.I remember seeing interviews where Mikael would say that ****ation was the band's best album. It sure is a lovely album, but in my eyes it pales in comparison to some of the previous albums.I was fearfull that he was gonna take Opeth toward's that more stripped down approach that Steven Wilson brought to the table that is evident on ****ation and some of BWP and Deliverence.
Not only that, it's also their 8th album. Most bands put out their best albums much earlier in their career.I was really expecting Opeth to be at the ceiling as far as their creative zone is concerned.I was really expecting them to fall into a niche and just do the same stuff over. I was sooooo proven wrong. Not is this one of the best(if not the best, but as Det said, it may be too soon to really say.For all I know I'm just on an Opeth high right now that will soon go down.), but it is also the most creative and expansive records. They cover so many different styles on this album. It's all over the place, but it flows so well.Every instrument is brought up to another degree.Everyone in the band brought their best performance. They signed a deal with a big "mainstream" lable and everyone expected them to either make their worst album, or just flat out go nu metal or metalcore or whatever these kids listen to these days. They did the total opposite of that.I think they will always go against the grain and will continue to do the opposite of what people think they will do.I will never doubt Mike and the boys ever again. |
Is it just me, or does it seem like the reason Steven Wilson didn't produce this album, was because Mikael wanted the music to be all his work.. Unlike the other albums where sometimes Steven had a huge part in writing some of it? A big reason Blackwater Park sounds so good as it does, is because of Steven Wilsons magical ears
|
I think i'm still getting over the fact we will never hear another MAYH or SL again. Remember the acoustics that were almost medieval? Ever since BWP and incidentally Mr S. Wilson producing, that mystical part of Opeth has dissapeared. ****ation was a nice album. The acoustics in that album do not hold a candle to the acoustic segments in Face Of Melinda, When, Under The Weeping Moon, To Bid You Farewell.
Opeth are a highly polished machine now. So far i'm liking what I've heard acoustically. The brutal moments sound almost meshuggah/toolish anyone agree? |
Okay,i cheated like alot of you others did, my friend downloaded the whole album and burnt me a copy. All i can say is amazing, this albums rules and it only grow on me after more listens.
|
I just saw Opeth live at the Sounds of the Underground tour,
They played Deliverance, To Rid the Disease,The Grand Conjuration, and Demon of the Fall. This is the first time ive seen them live and they were amazing! I couldnt believe how good Mikeals growls sounded live!! They are going on thier own north american tour next year, and theyll be coming back to Edmonton so ill be there!!! who else saw opeth on the SOTU tour??? |
I did, but they only played 2 songs due to a rain delay (Demon of the Fall and Deliverance). Still ruled, though.

Say what you will...I'm sure this album will be very controversial, alot of people will love it and alot of people will hate it...but "just another Opeth album"? How does that statement even make sense? This is the most atypical Opeth album to date....they haven't done anything even remotely similar to it. |

I dont know how any fan of Opeth could hate this album :p |
Opeth changed a lot their style after Still Life. Hiring Steve Wilson as a producer improved the sound quality in their albums, gave them some great influences but the the acoustic parts in their works werent IMO that good comparing with those at Orchid (Apostle in Triumph, Twilight is my robe etc) and also Opeth stopped being as dark they were in albums like MAYH which is by the way Mikael's favourite
|
Fucking hell, this is gonna be one long month. Luckily I got Orchid as a birthday present today... Perhaps it is enough to keep me from downloading any more songs.
|
Hmmm... there doesn't seem to be as much acoustic work on this album as on all the others. The synth also adds a whole new level to the Opeth lineup, I like it. Either way, I can't wait until the album comes out for real.

Does anobody know what happened with Lopez? is he fired or it were rumors only?

They were rumors I think. |
It's so hard to not just download a song, being a member of the Opeth forum, I'm being offered it and stuff but I don't want to accept it. It's like being a Priest in a Brothel. :upset:

The words "change" and "different" are in the very definition of an Opeth album. Just another Opeth album means it's like any other release- awesome, but different. I'm not trying to say it's a "once you heard this, you heard 'em all", because no Opeth album is like the rest. It's just another Opeth album! And that's goooooooood. |
