Can you elbaborate on how you record your songs? What exactly is a POD?

Ramsey 03-01-2005 03:19 PM

Well a Pod is basically an effects processor that you connect into your computer through USB. It has tons of preloaded amps (Such as mesa, marshall, peavy) so that you can have tons of different tube amps in one effects processor.

Also, by hooking it to your computer, you get recording quality that is unparalleled. Alot of artists use the POD. Meshuggah, for example, recorded all of their last two albums through a Pod, and not through amps, believe it or not.

I basically hook my pod through my soundcard.

Heres a sample of the song i'm working on (it was posted a few pages ago):
Ok, I worked it out.

Let me know what you think.

I think (imo) I hit it pretty close, almost the same level of studio quality.
As you can hear, the sound quality is excellent. I'm not really bragging, but thats what you get out of a pod :p

GurS 03-01-2005 03:23 PM

good evening one and all

Ramsey 03-01-2005 03:24 PM

Sup

ATM 03-01-2005 03:25 PM

So you plug your guitar directly into the pod, then use a usb cord to connect it into your computer? How much does this cost?

GurS 03-01-2005 03:26 PM

not much, my guitarist just send me a 'disturbing' song (according to him). it isn't, but tis a decent song

Illmatic 03-01-2005 03:26 PM

Ramsey: Sound quality was good, but I don't care much for the song. But that's because it's not my kind of music, not because it wasn't good.

Cain 03-01-2005 03:27 PM

Hello all.

Six Foot Revolver 03-01-2005 03:28 PM

Howdy ripper
DN, remember I said my uncle made me all these mixes? Check out the one I just put in. I couldn't fit all the songs in this picture, but you get the idea.

For DN

Cain 03-01-2005 03:31 PM

Playing some original tunes in here? I've been working on one a lot recently: it's coming along great. It's also been the primary reason I haven't been on mx in the past few days.
So you plug your guitar directly into the pod, then use a usb cord to connect it into your computer? How much does this cost?
Yes thats basically what I do, but thats not the method I use to record. I usually record by plugging my POD directly into my soundcard (like you would with a guitar).

To record from the USB you need to by a Line 6 program (manufactureres [bleh] of the pod) that runs about 50 bucks, I just don't have that money at the mo though.

Besides, recording through my soundcard is pretty decent sounding, as you heard.

Right now, I only have it connected to my USB port for the sole reason that you can control the PODS effects more effeciently from the computer. A cool feature of the POD is that you can download artists tones and play through a POD with that artists tone. For example, I downloaded the Meshuggah tone, and with the exception of the 8 string guitars they use, its identical to the Meshuggah tone on their albums. The sample I posted is the Meshuggah tone.

They don't come cheap, they usually run about 300 bucks new. You can find them in mint condition on Ebay though for like 200 bucks. I bought mine new.

If you ever consider it btw, don't get JUSt the POD. Get the POD XT. The regular POD is crap. The XT is updated and alot better.

DN: Oic were knot frendz ne more k?

:p

I've had writers block lately, so thats why i'm covering a Dark Tranquillity song.

ATM 03-01-2005 03:34 PM

Cool, thanks man. I'm going to have to look into it. One more n00b question, how do you program the drums in your songs?

Cain 03-01-2005 03:34 PM

Sweet. I record covers all the time.

The tune up there sounds pretty awesome by the way. I really need an interface for mics and cables to plug into my Powerbook. It would be badass to have my songs on my iTunes.

EDIT: I tried to rep you for the song, Ramsey, but I need to spread around. Funny, though, I don't remember repping you recently. Oh well.

GurS 03-01-2005 03:35 PM

So, has anyone here ever read Waiting for Godot, by Samuel Beckett? The most weird, abstract and ultimately depressing plays I've ever read.
For DN
OMGWTF your uncle is cool.

Also, I want those instrumental versions of "Atomic Dog" and "One Nation Under a Groove". For sampling purposes. Even if Dr. Dre beat me to "Atomic Dog".

Also, I wouldn't mind that version of "Flastlight" with ODB.

Sup big thread.
You should get lessons, AH.
Uh, hi. I'm in college. I'm poor. There are no Guitar Centers in the wasteland that is the location of my university. The stuff I know for guitar is through research, reading, and experimentation. I was hoping for methods of practice that I can use besides using the scale book and just fucking around and not getting anything accomplished. It's getting frustrating.

Thanks man.

Yeah, I usually just convert them in mp3s or wavs in Cool Edit/ Acid Pro and then I just open them. They automatically open for me in itunes.

Illmatic 03-01-2005 03:38 PM

Also, I want some of those Isaac Hayes and James Brown tunes up there.

(the only Isaac Hayes I have is the soundtrack to Shaft)

Ramsey 03-01-2005 03:39 PM
Cool, thanks man. I'm going to have to look into it. One more n00b question, how do you program the drums in your songs?
Well, I use a program called Fruity Loops.

Fruity loops lets you prgram drums in patterns, and just loops them for you. You can find drum files (like, each individual drum) on the internet, and the best one imo is Drum Kit From Hell, which is what I used on this song.

I can send you Fruity Loops and DKFH if you want man, just give me your MSN/AIM.

Disclaimer: They are huge files

I've heard good things about Fruity Loops. I should check that out as well.

NP: Porcupine Tree- Moonloop.

Thanks for the reppage BTW...I'll return it when I get a chance.

XxMetallica FanxX 03-01-2005 03:41 PM

i use a Behringer V-amp 2...just as good if not better than a POD and CHEAPER! i love the dam thing, comes with everything u need to plug and play, works as a preamp and effect processor....if u got an extra $100, id say try it at least!
