My mom just brought home some old vinyls form my grandparent's house. Among them were two albums recorded before Ringo, with Pete Best. One is a live show from Hammburg, the other is a studio album (I think). I can't listen to them, cause my stupid needle is broken, but it's still really cool.
Is the studio album called The Beatles W/ Tony Sheridan? They mention that in the Anthology book. Apparently on the first copies they spelled The Beatles wrong or changed the name or something.

clown_phobia 10-29-2005 03:27 AM

Has anyone heard the soundtrack to I Am Sam? It's all Beatles covers.

I have and I thought every cover but one (Can't remember which one) was horrible.

DeusExMachina 10-29-2005 12:39 PM

I have not heard the I Am Sam soundtrack. What is it? A movie?

The_Passenger 10-29-2005 01:05 PM
I have not heard the I Am Sam soundtrack. What is it? A movie?
Yeah, it's a movie, Sean Penn was in it. The soundtrack, as has been said it's all Beatles covers, apparently cause they couldn't get the rights to use the originals.

The soundtrack is OK, but nothing great.

The Clash 10-29-2005 07:39 PM

beatles best band of all time hands down

Seafroggys 10-29-2005 07:50 PM
I also wish I fully appriciated who Harrison was before he died.
I'm glad I did, in fact, at that point in my life THe BEatles were all I listened to, and I had started listening to Metallica and a couple of other classic rock bands (but nothing indepth).

Very few people can get the rights to Beatles songs, if anyone's ever noticed. Hardly anybody can use their songs, probably due to the licensing MIchael Jackson has on them. I was surprised to hear Happiness is a Warm Gun on Bowling for COlumbine.

dr._feelgood 10-29-2005 08:17 PM

I only starting getting into The Beatles a few months ago.

Yea, that's the title. I think alot of the material on the album are covers.I recognize some of the songs as thirties and fourties songs. I think the Hammburg concert is all covers as well.

DeusExMachina 10-29-2005 11:02 PM

I've never heard of that one... tear.

Britton 10-29-2005 11:07 PM

What would ya'll say was the beatles best concert?

DeusExMachina 10-29-2005 11:09 PM

None of them. It's not like the Beatles were a great live act or anything.

If I had to pick one, I'd say probably the Let it Be rooftop show.

Britton 10-29-2005 11:11 PM

Hmm okay.

I had never really heard of them having good concerts...and I can't really
say that I've seen much video....so that clears it all up

DeusExMachina 10-29-2005 11:13 PM

Well, they stopped playing live in 1966, with the exception of the rooftop concert. Focused on studio recordings.

Britton 10-29-2005 11:14 PM

Why? did they do that

DeusExMachina 10-29-2005 11:27 PM

The live shows weren't really concerts so much as fans screaming over the music. They just didn't like it, and wanted to focus on creating new music, rather then performing.

Britton 10-29-2005 11:28 PM

My Dad has a record of them at the hollywood bowl and you can't hear
anything

blue3 10-30-2005 05:10 AM

Haha. That sucks..

Paul H. 10-30-2005 06:15 AM

Across the Universe is a really good song

DeusExMachina 10-30-2005 02:36 PM

I like Across the Universe. Although I don't know why they didn't release the version from the LIB sessions. It's way better.

Dreww 10-30-2005 02:43 PM

How I <3 The Beatles.

With the drums and a bassline?

I agree.

superjoe 10-30-2005 04:33 PM

Skyler 10-30-2005 04:40 PM
hey does anyone know who plays the sitar on those few songs off revolver? did they have someone guest on it..or what.
George did.

The real songs or just covers?

I would have loved to see the Beatles in the Cavern club or Hamburg, apparently they were really swingin, and not famous enough to have all of the screamers yet
I'd have to be the only one

DeusExMachina 10-30-2005 04:56 PM
George did.

That picture is unbelievably cool.

MYR, did you get the KH soundtrack yet? Someone in the FF thread linked you to where you can download, but if you want I can YSI to you.

I haven't checked the FF thread, but I'll do so now.

Seafroggys 10-30-2005 07:10 PM

APparently the Beatles were a great live act back in the Cavern/Hamburg days, there's just very few audio and visual records. Brian Epstein really cleaned them up, and we have what we have.

Live shows didn't really get good until the later 60s anyway.

Skyler 10-30-2005 11:13 PM
ah, thanks for clearin that up.
No problem. George got really into Indian music in the mid sixties, so he bought a sitar and screwed around with it for a while. Eventually he went down to India and got some proper lessons from Ravi Shankar.

I got the impression that after the whole bigger than Jesus ordeal happened, the Beatles tried to avoid public appearances because of how heavily they were criticized by the public/media...but the reason you stated is probably more accurate.

magicbus 11-01-2005 10:00 AM

Yea, I read that they stopped performing live because they couldn't even hear the music they were playing over the noise of the fans, so they focused more on the studio work.

Leper 11-02-2005 12:53 AM

If I were in a popular band I'd probably focus more on studio work too.

clown_phobia 11-02-2005 03:49 AM
If I were in a popular band I'd probably focus more on studio work too.
but what about bands like the who that were better live than on the record?

The Clash 11-02-2005 06:26 PM

Ok guys, what Beatles song do you find yourself constantly listening to? Right now for me its Strawberry Fields Forever. CANT GET ENOUGH OF IT BABY! STRAWBERY FIELDS FOREVER!!!!!!!!

I'm sure that played a role as well.

I would want to focus on studio recordings if I was big, but playing live is just so much fun.

Walrus Gumboot 11-02-2005 07:00 PM

What would the Grateful Dead be without their live shows?
What would the Beatles be without their studio work?

I should write a Haiku

JonG 11-02-2005 07:01 PM

I actually don't download a lot of Dead bootlegs. I'm happy enough with their studio albums.

:)

Have you heard Europe '72? I hated the Dead's live stuff too until I heard that, the first disc is just amazing

I'm trying to learn Something on ukulele, but I need to get a new Uke, maybe on Saturday
I translated the incomprehensible Beatles Ukulele site into chord charts/ lyrics, but the scanner didn't pick up the pencil. I'll re-do it in pen and make sure to post it here, prolly on Friday

JonG 11-02-2005 07:20 PM

Yeah, I have Europe '72, Live/Dead and stuff like that. But they're all good :)
