I can't find a single flaw with them exept maybe an average song here and there.
He is one of the greatest ever, but not the greatest. He's among Steve Gadd, Thomas Lang and others.
Thomas Lang drew much of his playing from Peart's. I personally don't think they're comparable. Gadd, on the other hand, influenced Peart heavily. I would consider Peart a better drummer when you think about all the criteria (skill, influence, orignality, variety, etc.). While Gadd is well known within the drumming community, Peart's style (along with Rush) can be recongized easily by most half-knowledgable listeners. I wouldn't consider Rush to be very mainstream, if simply because they are very progressive. Their few hits get some radio play, but their better (and less-known) songs are very rare on mainstream radio. |
They have some songs that are too good not to be on the radio, but they're hardly mainstream. More like semi-mainstream but not really. It's not like they try to be mainstream. People just love their music.
|

Agreed. Songs like La Villa Strangiato, By-Tor and the Snow Dog, Cygnus X-I (both parts) aren't exaclty radio-friendly, but they're great nonetheless. |
Rush is on classic rock radio a whole lot. Tom Sawyer, Spirit of Radio, Limelight, Closer to the Heart, Working Man, and Freewill enjoy lots of radio airplay.
meh not were I live... once in a long while I'll hear a Rush song on. (long) |
meh not were I live...
once in a long while I'll hear a Rush song on. (long)
Yeah, all they play here is Tom Sawyer. |
It's always the same 5 or so songs. They have had such a long and great career that it's kind of sad for the radio the play the same few songs over and over.
|
Yeah, it is a shame, especially since tons of other less talented bands get 10x more radioplay. I would imagine that they probably get alot more radioplay in Canada than in the US though.
|
I got Roll the Bones (thanks to echoes:)) and the big wheel is an awesome song
|
the solo on a ghost of a chance is awesome
the solo on a ghost of a chance is awesome
Some of Lifeson's solo's are awesome, like his work in 2112. Some of it bothers me, like Tom Sawyer for instance. I just don't think it's a very well-constructed solo, and his tone isn't great either. Another favorite solo from him is La Villa Strangiato, great tone, beautiful solo. |
Yeah, one of the reasons I like Rush is because this is one of those bands where everone is amazing with their instrument.

Anybody else think that Alex Lifeson is the perfect band guitarist? I really think he is. He's unbelievable at finding the right ambience and layers, not to mention introducing lesser mortals to sus2 chords and musicianship, and plus he can shred an awesome solo when he wants and play an all-out "feel" solo if he wants. |

He tends to go kind of un noticed being in a band with Neil and Geddy, but he's a guitar god too. Not my favorite guitarist, but up there. |

I agree, he's heavily overshadowed by the others. Very talented, it's just that some of his solo's could have been better. Great live guitarist though. |

I still remember the first time I heard Tom Sawyer, I was in awe. I was in even more awe when I found out that they were only a trio!
|
2112 still stuns me. Talk about a truly epic work, along with songs like Xanadu and the Cygnus X-1 songs.
|
every so often ill i have a rush song that i listen to more often then others and right now its the Cygnus X- songs great stuff.
|

I love Xanadu. Probably my favorite Rush song. |
I love it too. Peart based the whole song off of the poem "Xanadu" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. So it's not really his work. Though he did a great job of turning it all into a song.
|
Tom Sawyer on Rush In Rio gives me chills evrytime. I love that song! Not my favourite though. 2112 is an absolute CLASSIC!
|
I seriously agree 2112 is a masterpiece.
On Presentation, how Geddy's voice changes from the soft beg of the main character, to the harsh hard vocals of the Priests, that's so amazing. |
Ever notice that in discovery when he finds the guitar, he hits a few open strings, not knowing what the hell to do and then in about a minute and a half completely masters guitar? :p

Isn't that supposed to symbolize him being in the cave for a long time teaching himself to play it? I read that somewhere. |

Yeah, that is kind of weird. And how he knows the correct tuning for it and tunes it using harmonics. It took me about 6 months to figure out what harmonics were and how to use them. It took the main character 1/2 a minute :upset:. |
Isn't that supposed to symbolize him being in the cave for a long time teaching himself to play it? I read that somewhere.
Yeah, considering it's about impossible to teach yourself in a minute, especially since he didn't even know what a guitar was.
I love it too. Peart based the whole song off of the poem "Xanadu" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. So it's not really his work. Though he did a great job of turning it all into a song.
Considering Coleridge started the poem while under the effects of drugs and stopped writing it when the drugs wore off, I think it's a very interesting work. Turning an unfinished poem into a song can't be easy. |
I know I've posted in this thread already, but we all should celebrate the greatness that is Rush.
They are truly one of those bands who can change the way a person thinks. It sucks they don't get more props for that. Everyone rants about how great the music is, but some of their lyrics are truly incredible. |
They're also one of the few rock bands to use movements in songs, and they did it to a greater extent than many other bands. Songs like By-Tor and the Snow Dog, La Villa Strangiato, 2112, and Cygnus X-1 are all examples of this.

I heard YYZ on the radio yesterday.

Definitely Working Man. It doesn't have keyboards so you don't have that to worry about. Or you could do Bastille Day. Great song. |
Try Working Man. Great song, one of their heavier ones.
My old high school band played that at a talent show. It was a horrible version of it, though. The "tight playing Gods" smoted our performance. :( |
If you're into the psycho-sounding solo stlye, try YYZ. Not too hard, but there's some good technique in there.
