i've been an opeth fan for awhile now. but i thought Dam-nation really sucked. it just wasn't Opeth. like it woulda been a good record for another band, but the beauty of opeth is the juxtaposition of dark macabre moments and lighter moments.Dam-nation was just all lighter moments. it was only half the equation.
BTW, whose that in your avatar Cardboard
It's Chuck Schuldiner from Death(RIP). |
Nicely done! :)
how does everyone think the band is going to be like without Lopez? You think Mendez's playing will be enhanced or will it falter (due to the fact that he's had Lopez a drummer for a long time now)? Do you think the band will be hurt without Lopez' awesome drumming (his latin percussion on the end of Closure, to me, made the song)? ANSWER ME **** IT! :)
Whoa, whoa...don't scare me like that. I thought Lopez was only out because of injuries, not PERMANENTLY! He's still on the band's bio page, etc....you'd think that they would update that if he was actually gone. |
I dunno, ive heard a few Opeth songs, and although they had a style all their own, i feel they are far overrated. Their songs to me seem bland. I have a feeling ill be on fire very soon.
|
Well, it's hard to say if a band is overrated since it all comes down to opinion. It is however possible to say if a band is over-hyped, and in the metal community Opeth are just that. However, I believe they deserve it.
|
hmm, there style may sound bland at first, to me it did, first time i listened to still life, i can't believe it, but i actually didn't like them, but i gave them another try, and it sunk in, and ever since, i have been a fully devoted opeth fan. On another note, for anyone who didn't know, akerfeldt said that opeth's next cd will have a more black metal feel, which would be interesting.
|
whats is some of their softer stuff?i just heard hope leaves and loved it
|
I like the Leper Affinity.
I had to post this. A lot of my old fav bands have sold out and most of the crap I listened to 5-10 years ago just flat out suck now. I bought a CD last year entitled Orchid by Opeth. Lemme tell you...It opened my mind to Music. I listened to Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pantera etc when I was younger, I am talking the early 90's. There are a select few good bands that have been out there forever and havn't sold out. Slayer, Iron Maiden etc. But Opeth...I don't think It's possible. if you havn't heard of them or heard them I suggest Buying ALL of their CD's. The most Intricate band In my opinion. Songs average around 13 minutes...And you just want MORE!!! The first song I heard by Opeth was In Mist She Was Standing. I had goosebumps....Just when I thought There were no good bands out there Opeth rescued me.
Opeth has no Genre. They are Opeth :thumb: "Through the eternal flame I travel...As the rain keeps falling" - Mikael Akerfeldt.
I first heard Forest of October about 2 weeks ago and now I'm obsessed with Opeth. I burned the Deliverance cd from a friend and I really want Orchid. I kinda prefer their older stuff. But yeah, brilliant writing, they have the creepiest riffs. |
what's funny is that Mike hates listening to parts of Morningrise, I think they have just progressed so much, why would you want ANOTHER Morningrise? Don't repeat something, progress...
Maybe that's why they are prog metal? |
I got into Opeth about 2 years ago, and they are by far the most creative band I've heard. Still Life is probably my favorite cd by them. I love how Akerfeldt can sing beautifully at times and then scream like no one you've ever heard.
Fav Songs - to bid you farewell, The Drapery Falls, The Moor, Godhead's Lament, To Rid the Disease, Bleak |
I recently heard a rumor that Opeth could be playing Ozzfest next year. Just a rumor, but if it is true, am I the only one that thinks they'd be just a little out of place?
/ghost bump |
They would be way out of place but it would also inspire me to go.

/ghost bump
Ozzfest is getting better...I would've loved to have gone this year. If Opeth's going to be there, I'm *definetly* going. |
I thought this was the last year for Ozzfest, i guess i was wrong.

/ghost bump
A lot of ****ty bands play at Ozzfest... Opeth wouldn't fit in...people will be blown away by their overwhelming skill and their ability to NOT play every song in Drop D |

My favorite songs remains to this day, Leper Affinity. The first tracks I actually heard were "The Drapery Falls" and "Patterns in the Ivy II" on a compilation album. I loved them instantly, and went out and bought Blackwater Park. I was so eager to hear more of them, and as soon as that first riff kicked in, I knew this would be a fucking phenomenal album, and a phenomenal band. It's just perfect the way it slowly builds up from silence, then just pounds you into submission. I've heard every album since, but nothing compares to that rush.
|
I am listening to Morningrise at the moment, I can't decide whether it is better than Blackwater Park or not.
|
At the moment, my favorite:
song to sing along clean to: In My Time of Need (harmonizing above Mike is fun) song to growl along to: Serenity Painted Death overall song to play along with (guitar): Leper Affinity opeth riff: the ending riff of Moonlapse Vertigo, it's also my favorite Opeth riff to play on guitar, just something about that riff that is godly Maybe some others can follow my little format, get this thread flowing again? Eh? Eh? |
The intro to Godhead's Lament
i heard that song, and only thought a few parts were alright. I heard another song, i think it was blackwater park, and it was slow and really good. it was awesome. It couldve been a different song though. I cant believe opeth is this popular though. Im not saying they suck, but there beat some big name metal gods in the polls, and thats insane. I really need to hear more of Opeth. |
Song to sing clean to: Death Whispers A Lullaby
Song to growl to: Blackwater Park (it has helped me growl better) Song to play guitar with: I don't play guitar, but if I had to choose a bass song, I go with Deliverance (only Opeth songs I can play are Windowpane and Hope Leaves) Riff: The beginning of Leper Affinity |
Does anyone else think the guitar solo on white cluster owns your ***??? ..or is it just me??
|
white cluster is basically just a kick *** song man.... lol
|
Death whispered a lullaby is such an awesome song, i love it.
|
opeth have a huge following in the polls at the moment. **** you all!!
|
...Probably because they're amazing....that helps.
|
Their best albums are: ****ation, Blackwater Park, Deliverance and My Arms Your Hearse.
Me and some other guys are going to try to contact Mikael (in some way) and interview him about his music-lifestyle into the metalscene. Lucky as we are, we live in the same city so it's not impossible to get that interview. |
