Uh...3....they had 3 singles....Silver and Cold was the only one I ever saw on TV, but I know GNG had that MTV2 award and TLSP2 was on tv too I think.
"about 2" probably includes a possibility of 3. that's what the "about" is for.

Alright guys, it's not like Leaving Song II ended up beating Britney Spears on TRL or anything, and for the record, let's have the comparisons to Good Charlotte end right here, cool?

When you compare pre-AOD to Sing the Sorrow, It's like comparing something the Clash did in '77 to London Calling or Combat Rock. When the Clash released their first album, punk was still very unrefined, so after a couple of years of being together, their music changed to a more mainstream sound. They were still The Clash weren't they? People will automaticly judge your product differently when you become "the only band that matters." The same thing has happened to AFI. A very tallented band gets together and makes some good, fast, punk rock. After a while, if you keep putting out the same mile a minute punk rock, everything sounds the same. Bands have to evolve to stay alive, and that's what they did. I don't believe that money has anything to do with what they really want, but if someone waves a wad of cash in your face, and says to use it to spend more time making a kick @$$ record, would you turn it down?

The point is, every band will change it's sound, it's the way things work. Art of Drowning didn't sound like Black Sails, STS didn't sound like Art of Drowning, and the newest album will be nothing like STS. Guarenteed.

Evolution is the name of the game these days.
i liked "very proud of ya" there new stuff sucks in my opinion.
Agreed

AFI are amazing. I don't think that them evolving makes them sell-outs. I mean, come on, would you listen to them if they still sang about cereal, high school and key lime pie? They grew up. Davey has said himself that the first 2 albums could be the same cd. There wasn't much of a difference between them. I don't think I'd listen to them if they sounded exactly the same as they did when Answer That came out.

Black Sails was an amazing cd, The Art of Drowning was great as well. Sing the Sorrow is f.ucking amazing in my opinion. The older ones are nice and fun to listen to but the newer ones are awesome.

I never really got into AFI, I always thought Davey Havok's voice was annoying.

BSOTS does sound pretty similar to Art Of Drowning.

I love is voice, it's what attracted me to them.

And STS is my favourite without a doubt, Black Sails is good too though.

he said before that he could understand if people hate his voice cuz it's high pitch and whiny....cant find the exact quote right now though

Amish Pornstar 07-14-2005 05:04 PM

AFI was the first band I really got into.

I want a tiny discussion on some lyrics here. But surprisingly for the song, "Key Lime Pie".

Now while it may seem like a song about key lime pie to you, I think it has a deeper meaning. Honestly.

AFI released "Dork", "Behind The Times", and "Eddie Picnic's All Wet" on Key Lime Pie Records. The song "Key Lime Pie" wasn't released until Wingnut Records put out "Answer That And Stay Fashionable" the next year AFI made their last release on Key Lime Pie Records. I think that maybe the song "Key Lime Pie" could very well be either about or inspired by the record label. Whether it is good or bad, I don't know. But I think it has to do with the record company because the words "Key Lime Pie" aren't so common that it would be coincedence. Or maybe I'm just overanalyzing.

Thoughts?
I really loved Black Sails in the Sunset. Although I tried, I couldn't get into anything else.
I def. agree. Black Sails was my favorite ever. But then they got kinda pop-punkish when the got up to The Art Of Drowning and now STS is just..depressing. Ha. They are an OK band.

ThisUserIsAPipebomb 07-14-2005 08:02 PM

Lines like this:

Key lime pie, infatuation that shouldn't exist
Key lime pie, your green filling makes me inept
"Fuck you, I'm mean" (I'm taking it out of context I realize)

I would see those as a bad thing. The green filling bit you could ignore and read that line as "Key Lime pie, makes me inept"

Wasn't Key Lime Pie their own personal label? Oh, Shizzy, look, I have Key Lime Pie lyrics in my name-y thingy!

maco 07-14-2005 09:19 PM

Key lime. Infatuation that shouldn't exist.
Key lime pie. Indulge and i am in your debt.
Key lime pie. Inspire me with foolish love.
Key lime pie, your green filling makes me inept.
Flaky crust is what i lust. Your fresh lime scent is a must.
Take me with coffee, never with tea. You're the pie that pleases me!
People gawk "is that pie green?" ask for a bite - "**** you, i'm mean."
Key lime pie - cheapest hooker i've ever had.
Key lime pie. Last slice gleaming, if you're out i'm mad.
Key lime pie. Poke fun and laugh and jest.
Key lime pie. Don't bother me, digest key lime pie.

I liked everything up until sing the sorrow, i mean i have all their cds, but then their sound just changed and i dont really like it. i mean i know it changed over time but it was such a jump. just dont like sing the sorrow. anything before is good

antiflagsetsfire 07-16-2005 01:43 PM

Their oldest stuff is amazing, God Called in sick today, Total Immortal, I Wanna Get a mohawk and stuff. Their new stuff is just kinda bad emo.

Quoted for truth.

blacklantern 07-17-2005 04:14 PM

well alot of you people are saying "oh the new stuff is **** and the old stuff rocks". I like both the new and the old stuff but i think its great that when performing live AFI still play all the old stuff. It's cool watching them play "This Secret Ninja"....davey sorta tries to sing it aswell as just old school sing......its pretty awesome...

I don't think their sound changed that dramatically. If you listen to Black Sails and even the Art of Drowning you can hear the subtle progression into Sing The Sorrow. Well, Atleast I can.

Black Sails in the Sunset is my favorite, then Art of Drowning, then probably Sing the Sorrow.

But, that's just my opinion. AFI is one of my top 5 favorite bands.

Leave this forum. You know nothing about punk if you consider their most recent album "emo".

For those of you still confused, emo is a common term today when something (usually type of music or poetry) is considered overly emotional. Now who would have thought something you dedicate your life to, something you spend months of your life, something put all of your effort into will not be emotional. Seriously now... why the **** is something bad if its emotional? Call it mainstream and ill get on your *** about something else but this **** is nuts.

Emo, when used in the right context, is an abbreviation for 'Emotionally Charged Hardcore Punk'

Listen to 'Rites of Spring' they are like the definition of 'emo' so listen to that, and try to compare that to Sing the Sorrow, and i assure you that you will be greatly embarassed by your lack of knowledge and abundance of stupidity and ignorant comments.

Amen to that..... its good that Minor threat knows what he's talking about...unlike alot of people who have posted in this thread......aka guy who called afi emo....
They were okay/good til they sold out.

And by 'sold out' I mean changed their sound to get on MTV, made music videos, signed a major label for money and raised ticket prices for their shows.
they didnt sell-out. I hated the new cd when i first heard it. I was like wtf is this? Only till this summer when i listen to it i found that i really like there new stuff. The guitar work is so much more challenging i can barely play it myself. The musicly every thing is a cut above everything esle they have made-drum wise and guitar wise, lyricly since black sails and some songs before that they have all ways been great and bass has always been cool (but it seems like the bass has losts its edge on the new cd.) The only thing i really miss is the heavy dist. WHere did it go? Ohh well...Basickly i belive Davey is trying to find himself as a dramatic figure and create his own stage-stage persona. I know that sounds weird since they'er great live but he stole his presence from Danzig all up to STS. In conclusion they didnt sell out, they just changed. The new cd alleinated the "TRUE FANS" but of u go back and actually listen to the daym thing u'll find great musicanship. And the lyrics bring a tear too my eyes.

yes....when did it happen that people decided Rites of Spring wasn't emo and MCR was? I asked one of my friends to recommend me a good emo band (she says she's really into emo and when I asked another girl about emo she was like "go ask val. she knows everything about emo" ). She (Val) named a band and I asked what they sound like. She said they're acoustic. I was just like "So....nothing like Fugazi then?" and she was like "Who's Fugazi?" and I was just like "old emo from the 80s...."
