Don't step to these...

I love the line "Now tell me where the **** you found an anorexic rapper"

Cracks me up all the time.

AIC/EAZY-E 05-25-2005 12:29 AM

Yeah, **** Snoop and Dre. Who the hell would choose 'Dre Day' over 'Real Muthaphuckin G's'? The beat, the flow, the disses are all superior. It was just a case of jumping on the bandwagon at the time.

AIC/EAZY-E 05-25-2005 12:31 AM

...and not to mention that Snoop is REALLY stale right now. If you hear the raps he does on 'Drop It Like It's Hot' and compare them to the likes of 'Tha Shiznit' you'll know what I mean.

hafez 05-25-2005 01:44 AM
I think that UK rap should be mentioned as I think bands such as The Streets have amazing lyrical talents and go beyond what most people think of rap. I would highly recommend downloading "dry your eyes mate" or "blinded by light" for anyone who enjoys good music
And Eazy always was this great lyrical rapper, right? Give me a break. Snoop and Eazy both annoy me to death. Snoop never was a great rapper. He just made better music. Well, to most, and I can see their point. I can't stand that watered down "west coast G-funk" sound, though.

Eazy was a joke as a rapper. Good business man. But a terrible rapper. He didn't even want to rap in NWA at first because he knew he sucked.

I recommend the Mitchell Brothers who are a great UK rap team. They are the rappers who do the main part while the guy from the streets does his little backing parts on Blinded By Lights. They're also ****ing amazing.

I like how you posted that two seconds after the thread was made. Nice educated post.

I've just been getting into rap lately. I've always liked some of it off and on over the past few years, but never really got into it, because I'm not a fan of most of the mainstream hiphop. These days I can't stop listening to it. Good reccomendations.

Apologizes if this has been mentioned already, but is anyone an MF doom fan round these parts, operation doomsday is one of the best!
You know what....the first type of music I was into was all RAP! Mainstream rap that is. I was big into Snoop Dogg, 2pac, Dr Dre, Ice Cube, and all the other mtv stuff. I would listen to the local rap station on radio and record the music onto tapes. I even went out and bought cds....it all came crumbling down in my freshmen/soph year when I started to listen to rock and metal and now I bearly ever give rap a listen.

Now I want to say that Rap has it's talents just as any genre does. It's your opinion on whether you think it has a lot of talent or bearly any. I think a lot of work goes into the studio and how to create the right beats for the right lyrics. You can't just lay a beat with Fruityloops and make everyone listen to it. It takes more than a simple program. It takes mastering and producing just as other music genres do. Sometimes rap groups will actually play the instruments themselves and record guitar licks, bass lines, drums, etc.

Now imo, rap right now is horrible....I'm talking about MTV (c)rap. I also want to separate rap from hiphop because I think there's differences. A lot of the rap you hear about on mtv is all about money, girls, drugs, surviving the hood, etc. In hip hop it's more about writing good lyrics, making good rhymes, using the right words, metaphors, and a whole lot of poetry. It's not easy to write hiphop lyrics. I also think hiphop takes a more personal approach to songwriting and not just about money, girls, and drugs. This is all just my opinion though.
yea rap right now sucks, i heard a 50 cent song last week and he ryhmed bit with bit about 20 times in a row and thats just god awful

i have to say though, i do like public enemy and run d.m.c so im not here just to make fun of rap

Alive 05-27-2005 03:23 PM

I like the Game's latest work, it's called Hate it or Love it, I think. Anyone else?

Iai 05-27-2005 05:04 PM

I quite like that track, yeah. Nothing too special, but enjoyable.

I heard their latest track - Harvey Nicks, I think? - and wasn't massively impressed. I'll keep my ears open for them though.

That song changed my mind about the new rap thats coming out I actually like almost every new "gangster" rapper.

RazorsInTheNight 05-27-2005 08:49 PM

I can't stand The Game to be honest, anyone could rap as good as him and the lyrics are nothing special either.

Pah, I knew he didn't invent it. And that's just what they call him on his CD :upset: . Hey, but Eazy DID improve greatly between Eazy Duz It and It's On, seriously. I don't think he's the best rapper of all time, of course, I hold that to Rakim. But I still respect the man greatly, and if you're familiar with his whole catalogue and what he's done, you'll grow to aswell.

holmeise 05-28-2005 07:20 AM

some rap is good if the message it conveys it a good one, political rap is good and alot of australian rap acts have the right idea, rap is also good when mixed with rock such as sum41, RATM,RHCP or goldfinger

AblazeMySorrow 05-28-2005 12:00 PM

tupac amaru shakur is teh best rapper. 1971-1996, R.I.P. Tupac Amaru Shakur a.k.a. Makaveli - The Don Killuminati. "i aint a killa but dont push me, revenge is like teh sweetest joy next to gettin pu ssy"

LF96 05-28-2005 02:46 PM

I didn't really like this essay-'thing' about rap. There's so much more to tell about the genre and stuff. There are WAAAAY better songs from Atmosphere to put up than Shoes (i.e. If I Was Santa Claus, The Woman With The Tatooed Hands, God Loves Ugly,...) if you ask me. But anyway, here are some songs I'd recommend:

Pete Rock & CL Smooth - T.R.O.Y. (They Reminisce Over You)
Common - I Used To Love H.E.R.
Black Star ft. Common - Respiration
Edo G & Da Bulldogs - Love Comes And Goes
DJ Shadow - Building Steam With A Grain Of Salt & Midnight In A Perfect World (these are instrumentals but they're great)
A Tribe Called Quest ft. Leaders Of The New School - Scenario (THE ultimate posse cut in my opinion)
The Roots - Do You Want More?!!!??! (the song, the album is a must as well)
GZA - B.I.B.L.E. (Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth)
Gang Starr ft. Inspectah Deck - Above The Clouds
...

:)

I love NWA and Public Enemy, but that's as far as I attempted to go when it comes to gangsta' rap.
I've seen it a million times.

Somebody mentions rap, and about 20 comments follow with people saying how much they hate it, and how it isn't music. They claim that is just about money, killing, hoes, etc.

I can't really get angry with these people, for the sole reason that the radio is full of that bullshit. Someone will usually come along and say, "The underground has much better stuff." But without actually hearing some good rap, statements like that don't accomplish much.

So all I ask is that everyone gives rap an honest listen. If you like it, great, if not, then at least you have an educated opinion on it.

To understand rap, you need to know a little about the origin.

Rap is part of the hip hop culture, which also includes graffiti and break dancing. It came out of the South Bronx in the late seventies, stemming from funk and disco. It emerged as a form of self expression for the black and hispanic community in New York. Conditions in these neighberhoods were poor, and the way the people expressed this was through rap. Crews started to form, to give members identity, and this is deeply rooted in the hip hop culture.

Early rap recordings:

* Sugarhill Gang - Rappers Delight
