Cool, I didn't know that their was a Rush thread. They're definitly my favorite power Trio, after Cream that is. Still they're a really cool band.
|
It was getting in the way of his music, maybe?
Trust me, Canadian high school is not very good.
Can't be worse than American high school, unless you're in one of those weird 13-grade provinces. I bought Caress of Steel the other day and it's good stuff. Especially The Necromancer, that's easily the high point of the album. Lakeside Park doesn't really do it for me but the rest of the album is grooving. |
I havn't heard caress of steel. I hjeard it is a pretty hard rock type album
true? |
Rush is one of my favorite bands... went and saw one of their shows on the 30-year reunion tour. It was great, I especially though it was funny of how you had such a diverse croud of people, college kids and 40 year olds and people my age... lots of fun.
|
You don't have to be a certain age or kind of person to like Rush. Just have a good taste in music.

Well said. |
I know, it just looked funny to have a mosh pit of older men... But back to my point, Rush owns.

true?
Not really more or less so than their others from that era. It has Bastille Day, which is pretty hard. The Necromancer and The Fountain of Lamneth both have some pretty hard parts, but really soft parts too. |
my friend would love this thread he's obsessed beyond words with rush and in my opinion rush is one of the greatest f'uckin bands ever
I havn't heard caress of steel. I hjeard it is a pretty hard rock type album
true?
Eh, I think every song on it stinks except for "Bastille Day" and part of "Fountain of Lamneth." "The Necromancer" in particular could have been SO much cooler than it was, but as it is it's truly awful. Lifeson's soloing tone is the most annoying, shrill, wheedly tone ever (which is a shame since his solos are more shredderiffic than usual), and they overabuse the "stop-start" thing a LOT throughout the album. Matter of fact, it's a rather poor attempt to emulate the "epic"ness of bands like Genesis. Even "The Fountain of Lamneth" is a poor rip-off of Genesis' "The Fountain of Salmacis." Pass. 2112 did the epic prog-hard rock thing MUCH better. "Caress of Steel" has terrible production and generally awful songwriting and sound. IMHO, of course. |

I don't think that it's hard to be obsessed with Rush. They're currently my favorite band. |
umm I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen
I mean he didn't think he needed it. Not that someone just decided he didn't |
That makes more sense. Obviously Peart didn't need it :)
|
I love this band. I just ordered a 2112 shirt. It's spiffy.
I'm going to pick up an album tomorrow, and I have 2112 and Moving Pictures. Any suggestions? |
I am in your same situation and I am going to get Permanent Waves next
|
Ok I'm a Neil Peart nerd so I won't get on y'alls cases about it. BUT, he dropped out because he wanted to pursue a career in music in England only to find out that it was much harder than he thought so after a year or two he returned to Canada and went to an audition for Rush. He was so poor that he had to carry his drums in garbage cans.
I will personally say that "Tom Sawyer" didn't influence that song what-so-ever. Because, "Welcome Home" is a direct ripoff of the song "Rainbow Warriors" by Bleak house. It has the same acoustic passage and same style structure, not to mention James said they "borrowed" the stuff from an obscure band......it was only a matter of time before he was caught.
anyway....Rush rules, Metallica does not :p
No, the ryhthm section during one of the parts of Welcome Home is taken from one of the ryhthm sections of Tom Sawyer. Listen to both songs and you'll hear it. |
Ok so Metallica ripped off a bit from Rush, so what? That's not influencing them.
|
Well, actually that is influencing them, but it doesn't matter. I like both bands so whatever.
|
Yep yep.
I'm learning Free Will on guitar. Such good riffs :) |
i only learned the main riff
the most i learned what Spirit of radio and I could play the intro up to speed :) but I can't anymore since I havn't worked on it:( |
Free Will is a great song but what's with the guitar solo? It doesn't fit the song at all.
|
Yeah, it doesn't quite pwn like the Red Barchetta solo.
|
The only rush songs I know are "yyz" and "spirit of the radio" , I should learn more.
|
i know yyz everything up to the solo.
|
i know yyz everything up to the solo.
That last run in the solo is awesome. The bass is great in YYZ too, one of Geddy Lee's best. |
oh yeea the legato run is sooo sweet
|
I can't do that really fast part before the main section. It's just too **** fast for me.
|
On drums I know :
Tom Sawyer The Pass Subdivisions Bastille Day I think I'm going bald 2112 (overture) Lakeside Park |
