I don't know what emotion you're talking about. They seem for zany and playful than emotional.
Though much of the music is very upbeat and almost pop-punk, I think their lyrics and vocals express a lot of emotion.
what category would taking back sunday be?
Pop-Punk. |
Do Grade(the band) have a website? I can't find it when I google "grade"..

Pop-Punk.
Converge has emotional lyrics, but they still are metalcore. I cant agree that they are emo. |

Highly doubt it, they've been broken up for a while. |
awesome thread.

You're missing the point. I realize that the lyrics are definitely not what makes a band emo. But I said the way the vocals and music blend creates a lot of emotion, and don't tell me the music isn't chaotic. This seems to sound like emo to me. (I'm talking about Odd How People Shake keep in mind) |
Jesus, lickgoldensky are so damn weird.
|
I think you mean screamo, they just dont put enough emotion into their music. They are close though. :)
Hahahahahahha!!! Genre nerds correcting eachother. |
No, I don't mean screamo. They aren't grindy enough to be screamo. But as for emo, I think they fit in the genre perfectly. The music is chaotic, beautiful and artsy at the same time and they put so much emotion into it. Sounds like emo to me.
You suck. Last time I looked, 'screamo' was a descendent of emo. Are emo bands even the slightest bit 'grindy?' NO. Oh, and Angel Hair and the like don't count as emo bands. Look man, have you ever been to an emo show? NO. I remember bands crying at shows, giving it their all, etc. Those 'traits' you named are really, really stupid. You self-proclaimed 'screamo' kids don't know **** about the roots or the genre itself. |

I was inquiring about the band and judging by the definition I have learned through fourfa and the members of this forum, seeing if they could fit into that genre. For your information, I saw Hot Cross and LickGoldenSky at a local venue. But I guess they aren't real emo right? It's only the original offshoot hardcore bands that it is most likely no one on this board has seen in concert. Fear Before The March Of Flames was also listed under the "Bands that draw roots from emo" at the beginnng of this thread. Again, judging from what I have learned, I thought they could be classified under emo. Then you storm in here, calling other people ignorant and stuck-up, when your one of the most elitist bitches I've seen on the board in a while. Didn't you say that you shouldn't "slag off" on kids because they have an altered definition.
it's much better to try and get them into new music without making bitchy comments.
Oh look, there it is. Live and studio are different things. I realize that a big part of emo was the fact that the bands brokedown and cried on stage. But if that's the only thing that makes a band emo, emo is one of the stupidest genres ever created. I'm sure Elton John and The Beach Boys have cried on stage, are they emo? From what I have read from various sources, emo music is usally chaotic, along the lines of hardcore, and usually has very artsy and emotional lyrics, vocals and music, thus the term emo. I feel that Fear Before The March Of Flames puts alot of heart and emotion into their music, while accompanying it with very chaotic music. By the defintions I am used to, that might make them "an emo band." I know screamo as a harder version of emo, usually even more chaotic. Many of the screamo bands listed in this thread sound like "grind/grindcore," but with a sense of art, beauty and emotion in them. This is another definition that I am used to hearing. Though part of the definitions is the presence of a very emotonal stage presence, that is definitely not the main factor. I'm sorry I can't sit around with you and reminsce about the ol' days when you went to concerts where real emo bands used to cry on stage, but the defintion I have listed seems a little more logical. |

Hey torn, I saw Explosions in the Sky last night. They cried onstage. I guess they're emo now.
|
trophy scars are awesome. i didnt realize they were pretty big now since i grew up with them in my hometown. i didnt know a lot of other people knew about them since ive just been hearing about them since i was a lot younger. its awesome to see a local band get known.

Ouch, I bet you didn't finish middle school. "I fit in my coat, my coat fits in my bag, so I fit in my bag." Doesn't make sense, does it? "Emo bands cry on stage, Explosions in the Sky cried onstage. Explosions in the Sky are an emo band." F. cbmartinez, are most emo bands even the slightest bit grindy or chaotic or whatever? Not counting Constantine Sankathi, Clikatat Ikatowi or Portraits of Past? By the way, if you weren't around long enough to see those bands, you shouldn't be trying to instruct kids on what 'emo' is. |
You answered my argument pretty poorly. I'm not saying emo bands are grind, I'm saying screamo has a lot of grind influence. It's like classic metal and death metal. A band like Black Sabbath is considered metal and then you have bands like Cryptopsy that are insane, chaotic death metal. Though they both come from metal, I called Death Metal chaotic. I didn't say classic metal was chaotic, I said Death Metal was. See how two different sub-genres can be chaotic and non-chaotic?

That's bullshit. That means that the whole concept of history is a joke. "The Declaration Of Independce was signed on July 4, 1776." Well, I guess since my history teacher wasn't there, he has no write to teach it, and neither does anyone who's under the age of 230. I never saw Refused in concert, so I guess I can't talk about them or the genre there in? |
*mandatory CTTS post*
CTTS have big grind influences and are emo. weeeeeee |

I'm sure he'll try a lot harder next time, because you know, that's something that he can control. In the meantime, I'm going to go cure cancer by telling people not to get it. I like your philosophies! |
Heheh. I think I'm putting up a pretty decent argument.
|
I have a question, since there are some knowledgeable people in this thread. What do you guys consider Hopesfall as? I think they are emo. But I don't know.
|
Hopesfall are metalcore/post-hardcore. Maybe some indie and progressive in there.
|
Ok thanks.

You're not getting my point. You shouldn't be a genre nazi and pretend you know everything about a particular genre if you haven't been around long enough to witness it yourself. |
You're not getting my point.
You shouldn't be a genre nazi and pretend you know everything about a particular genre if you haven't been around long enough to witness it yourself.
I have witnessed it. I've listened to numerous emo and screamo bands. Unless of course you mean seen in concert, because that brings me back to my original argument. |

Yeah torn, you're an idiot.
