Theres no doubting opeth are an important metal band, but the thing that impresses me most about them is their ability to convince new fans. ive got most of my mates hooked on them, and they inspire you to just pick up the guitar and ****in PLAY!!. when the eagles played hotel california live on j2, my olds were giving them the biggest whipping ive ever heard. Man opeth play that **** in every song.

ryanoceros 08-19-2004 05:36 AM
I've yet to find a band like Opeth. I love 'em though - need to pick up one of their CDs. Suggestions? My favourite song is The Drapery Falls...
try a band called novembre

ryanoceros 08-19-2004 05:45 AM
Yeah. Agreed...I do like Deliverance but it isn't up to their standards IMO. The Masters Apprentices is my Favourite tune from that LP. I have recently been listening to a lot of the "hearse", trying to play the intro to the song When...It's ****ing impossible. I can play all sorts of stuff but the intro is quite hard to play and get it to sound right. Some strange chord structures are involved. I can pretty much play all of Karma...Jazz chords start it out, sounds badass! :thumb:
keep going at the intro to when, you'll get the timing. I can play around 6 minutes of that song now. It feels good to hit the nail.

ryanoceros 08-19-2004 06:00 AM
No, i honestly don't think they deserve their own genre. It's not like they are doing anything revolutionary.

Not only that, but there are so many genres these days that I don't think there is any band that exists or will exist in the near future that deserves their own genre.
and what has time got to do with it?

Till_Lindeman001 08-19-2004 07:20 AM

Someone on MX recommended Opeth to me, I forget who it was, a while ago, and I've just listened to "The Drapery Falls" on RealPlayer, and despite the 32Kbps bit rate, it kicked serious a$$ so whoever it was, thanks :thumb:

bucket 08-21-2004 08:43 PM
but Opeth will never do a Morningrise II. They said so.

What's everyone's favorite Opeth solo? Mine's the second in A Fair Judgement.

The feedback one in Master's Apprentices. ~orgasm~

BTW, exciting news! I got the Opeth hookups through this girl I have a major crush on, her brother (who's starting his own record label) is burning me every Opeth cd! I wanted to buy them, but I can't find anything pre-Blackwater Park.

Dancin' Man 08-21-2004 09:46 PM

I love the feedback on the beginning of The Drapery Falls. The Ebow use on that album is perfect.

Kafkastolemyslippers 08-21-2004 09:54 PM
they are definitely an inspiration. Whenever I play guitar, I'm always trying to fool around with a few riffs that have an Opeth feel to it. Haven't really written any songs though. hehe
Hell yeah. I have tons of songs written that are really simple, but every now and then I get inspired to rip off Opeth in some 10 minute song.

Kafkastolemyslippers 08-21-2004 09:58 PM

Drapery falls is kickass, but my favorite Opeth song of the moment is In Mist She was Standing. Printed up the tabs for it yesterday, I am going to try to learn it while I am on vacation

bucket 08-21-2004 10:26 PM

I find Opeth hard to learn, mostly because my lack of guitar skill, but also because most of the songs I want to learn are so rich with harmonies and packed with multiple layers that I can't get it to sound right so I give up. :) Go me.

NJMetalMeister 08-21-2004 10:27 PM

I don't find opeth songs hard to play, just hard to learn because they have a lot of little bridges and do not like to repeat parts in songs a lot, it's just a lot of memory you have to comitt to one song basically.

Cain 08-22-2004 11:21 AM
I find Opeth hard to learn, mostly because my lack of guitar skill, but also because most of the songs I want to learn are so rich with harmonies and packed with multiple layers that I can't get it to sound right so I give up. :) Go me.
Yeah, I feel the same way. I don't learn Opeth to get it to sound right anyway...I just rip 'em off! No, just kidding, but really, understanding all the parts does wonders for my creativity. Actually, I did a progressive rock score for the Lord of the Rings trilogy as my senior project(I was gonna record it, too, but I ran out of time), and Opeth were a huge inspiration for a lot of the riffs and layers. No direct rip-offs, but the Guitar Grimoire and Opeth are the two main reasons I understand theory, so it's a huge inspiration. That DVD documentary--"Lamentations"--they just released makes me want to write a million songs when I watch it. Pick it up sometime.

BTW, other bands besides Opeth? There are none that do Opeth's style as well as they do. But it seems to me that you're like me in that you really like layers and complex orchestration. So, here's something to take a risk with: this Icelandic alternative band called Sigur Ros. Trust me. Go to the music store and ask for either the album "Ægetis Byrjun," or "()" (that's right, the parentheses album). This band are musical geniuses through and through. It's only four guys coming up with incredible string arrangements and ambient guitar and piano textures...there's very little you would qualify as standard "rock" about them. Matter of fact, get that "()" album first. Very minimalist, and sometimes repetitive, but the very last song of the album is worth the price. I'm not even joking...that song is close to my number-one favorite song of all time. It's got the biggest orgasmic explosion of any song I have ever heard. The drummer explodes with such intense fury after an album filled with slow beats that he puts Danny Carey to shame. Check it out. It's the most gorgeous music ever. It's good homework music, too, especially at a loud volume.

bucket 08-22-2004 11:42 AM

I don't have a DVD player :( And the instrument store here doesn't carry the Guitar Grimoire... I've checked. But hey, there's always music theory class that starts in a few days!

I'd take your word for Sigur Ros, but I would bet my life that the Sam Goody here doesn't carry it... Grrr they haven't had MAYH or Still Life in stock every single time I go there, but I did snatch MAYH at Virgin Records in Chicago. I guess I might try downloading some to get myself off of Opeth fever.

Kaden 08-22-2004 01:42 PM

Sigur Ros is amazing :)

In Mist She Was Standing..AMAZING! :D 1 of my faves

Kaden 08-22-2004 01:56 PM

Sorry if this has already been spoken of, but I don't feel like reading a 14 page thread. Is anyone else amazed by the outro to Deliverance? That's some tight timing...

Yes.
Sigur Ros is amazing :)
For good measure.

Dancin' Man 08-22-2004 02:23 PM

I really dig Nectar. Great song how it just switches back and forth from acoustic to metal. Some of their best screams (not growls, screams) too.

If you've got a Borders Books and Music around, they might have the Grimoire. The Grimoire is really six or seven books, and they all fit together as a whole. You've got Scales and Modes, Chords and Voicings, The Keyboard Grimoire, the Bass Grimoire, A Notated Intervallic Study of Scales(which is a sight-reading training book), the Chord Encyclopedia, and Progressions and Improvisation. To tell the truth, music stores usually carry songbooks and technique-oriented books. The songbook section of a big store like Borders might have just what you're looking for.
Strawberries also will probably have Sigur Ros. Sam Goody...wouldn't know. Check it out anyway. I don't think you'll be disappointed, although I should reserve my praise for someone else who already likes it, as it is very strange in parts, particularly the vocalist's extremely high-pitched falsetto, but it's a strangeness I like.

bucket 08-22-2004 08:26 PM

My old guitar teacher let me borrow his Chords Grimoire and during a lesson we looked at the scales one. Those things were awesome.

I downloaed Avalon and track 9 from the Ageatis (?) album. :-\ Quite odd... I don't think I'll be listening to them too much, but if I do see () in stores I will get it just for the "orgasmic explosion".

I forget who said it, but someone mentioned that they got all of their friends to listen to Opeth, but I have only been able to convert one person. Another friend of mine, a guitar player, will just listen to about 10 seconds of them and just smile and then stop listening. :( He won't even give the poor fellas a chance. Not even ****ation... Oh well I guess some people don't like certain music... who would have guessed?

Det_Nosnip 08-22-2004 08:30 PM

Progressive death metal..gee, who'd have thought it'd have a selective fanbase? :)

Opeth isn't for everybody. Mikael's growling scares off alot of people with softer tastes, and the acoustic sections probably bore alot of die-hard death metal heads to tears. I'd say that you need a pretty broad taste in music in order to be able to really appreciate the band.

filter 08-22-2004 08:49 PM

Opeth is sexy

I agree...you have to have an appreciation for all kinds. I'm not a huge metal fan, but Opeth just changed me a lot and helped me accept metal for its genius. If you close your mind to Opeth, I just say "Its your loss and you don't know what you are missing"

A lot of Opeth fans were not death metal fans until they heard them, but Opeth is like a bridge to a greener pasture (or black, on how you view metal). I know without Opeth, I wouldn't have heard of The Gathering, Anekdoten, Porcupine Tree and Anathema, which are 4 of my favorite bands.

Therefore, Opeth has made me a better musician and music lover :)

I hate to say it, but I agree ;) from a heterosexual standpoint, though.

Though, Mendez is pretty ugly :upset:

He's still a great bassist
Black Sabbath.....they created the genre, if it weren't for them there would be no opeth, because all the bands that inspired opeth would not exsist in their entity either
Not completeley...If Black Sabbath didnt exist there would be another band to create the metal genre... ITs not like they were "The Chosen Ones For Metal" They were the first that we know of, but if they didnt exist, somone else would have...

:) Yeah, I guess they're not for everybody. The singing is a bit strange, very high, and untrained. I dig most of it, but I can totally understand the less-than-pleased face you've got up there.
But that eighth song off "()," man...seriously. In some hardcore circles this song is entitled "The Pop Song" but the title is just Sigur Ros's weird humor. The song is unbelievable. Hey Kaden, do you have that? Maybe you know what I'm talking about.

Cain 08-24-2004 12:36 PM

BTW, and bucket, if I get answers to this question, it may help your quest to get off Opeth, but for the other gentlemen (and women, too, haven't checked if you're actually in here but I'm just playing it safe) in this forum, I've got a question. Music Junkies Anonymous has brought this band called Paramaecium to my attention, and the reviews say that they preceded Opeth in the very heavy/very beautiful cross of metal. I have a lot of respect for this particular reviewer's opinions, and he considers multiple moments off their albums to contain the most beautiful and most powerful moments he's heard on any other album of the same type(including his favorite guitar solo of all time), and that includes all Opeth and the band of Opeth's first producer(what is the name? I think it's Edge of Sanity. Did they release an album called "Crimson?" If so, then that's it.). I can't find either of their albums in stores or @ bn.com or Amazon. Anybody know this band?
