For a song to be truely sad, the lyrics and music have to be depressing.
For me, the Ataris' "Between You and Me" is one of the sadder songs I've ever heard (I even mentioned it a while back). Perhaps because I could truely relate to it. The music alone is not depressing, but the words are.

apart from the billions of other sad songs already mentioned, I think Happy by the Wrens is really, really sad. It's so simple but the way the tension build up and up and up, and then the (again, really simple) lyrics...the song just gets to me. It sums up having your heart broken for me. The way he sounds so sad and bitter and like he is forcing himself to hate the person he is writing about. :(

Old, old thread. I do not know who bumped it, but I missed out. Select the appropriate reason, find a razorblade and a stereo, and begin cutting. Do NOT get a trendy emo haircut.

I am flawed, seriously:
Radiohead - Fake Plastic Trees, Bulletproof... I Wish I Was
Modest Mouse - Trailer Trash
Lou Reed - Perfect Day
Xiu Xiu - Little Panda McElroy

Existence is bleak:
Pedro the Lion - Priests and Paramedics, Rejoice
Modest Mouse - Bankrupt on Selling
Joy Division - Novelty

I am all alone:
Dismemberment Plan - The City
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart
Beatles - For No One

I have been raped:
My Bloody Valentine - No More Sorry

The World is going to end:
Dead Kennedys - Moon Over Marin
Wolf Parade - Dinner Bells
Flaming Lips - All We Have is Now
