Well, linking the listening parties to three old dudes blowing each other is not an acceptable alternative.

If you have a problem with somebody, you should bring it up with him or her.

If they're not listening to you, then contact someone on AIM (Wintermute is almost always on AIM and MSN, even if he's away, just leave a message). And then just talk to that mod and give them the opportunity to bring it up with somebody. This requires patience, yes, but it's a price you have to pay in this case. Patience is a good virtue to have, even on the Internet.

Is this not an acceptable alternative that does not affect others?

HeatoN 11-20-2006 08:25 PM

no

the point is the site forum was at least the best way to address and have all the mods read something

talking to one person at a time is useless and inefficient

all the reasonable mods are in forums i dont even use!

I Have been a mx member for over three years now and I am 45 years old...
Jeremy, the main problem with mx is the median age of it's members..which is like 15-16.
Now granted, today's generations are much more brilliant than I ever was at their age, but the simple fact is they are children. We expect them to act like adults, but they can't for a myriad of reasons.
The real bad seeds who come in and try to destroy the wondeful site you've created are obviously malajusted, extremely bored, and have not been raised properly by their parents etc...
I find many young adults very respectful to me on here, at times I try to give then useful information, other times I post yo mamma jokes & sink below their level..lol
It should first and foremost be fun and secondly educational in some way in a forum of this magnitude.
I commend you Jeremy, yes, I understand your frustrations, but kudos to you because you have created a forum that is at the same time, fun & entertaining, and informative.

All Children when they misbehave should be punished, depending on the severity of their bad behavior, they should be punished more severely..ie..perma bans, IP bans...

I for one, am proud to be a member of mx and all the younger & older members I have interacted with have been awesome..Yes, there are a few dickheads, but that goes with the territory..
Again, my hats off to you Jeremy...There will be problems, you & your team will find solutions, but also, be proud of your creation...
no his big gripe is that the mods don't answer him. we CAN'T just ignore it and delete his posts as they come up. i'd LOVE to do that but it doesn't solve anything! you HAVE to listen to chad if you are given these amazing moderating powers.

this is my gift, and my curse....
just ban everyone who breaks the rules and don't have lengthy serious discussions about it. Like if you permban me rightnow for nothing, I wouldn't be that annoyed But if we go around discussing everything to death and throwing insults at each other, I would be like "hey, this guy is retarded."; if I had haxng powers I would probably do something to annoy that guy. See my point?

the threads are for guitar-forum-related problems, not arguing about the mods themselves. that's because the actual moderators are seldom a problem. if they are, it will be noticed as soon as anyone other than you complains about them.

havent you ever heard of the boy who cried wolf??

But we've already established that the staff is not on 24/7 to answer questions, so what's the harm in talking with a mod off the boards? Not everything can be here and now.
all the reasonable mods are in forums i dont even use!
So what? You can still talk to them, can you not? I talk to NPC off and on and I never go into Alt&Indie because all he'd do is berate my taste in music with one word posts! Heh.

Hopefully, a 'reasonable' mod is one who you trust to address the issue and get back to you within a reasonable amount of time. This requires patience, though, again.

I'm sorry I made fun of you, JayLink.

HeatoN 11-20-2006 08:28 PM

so yd we are going to have an mx where

the guitar forumers get banned for double posting

and the members of forums with more lax mods can post porn and be fine

it is still 100x better to discuss the whole thing in one place rather than over aim to one person at a time

nobody knows the other parties views and are like hmm before i do anything i dont want to hurt the other mods feelings even though i agree that you got banned for a really really stupid reason

dei 11-20-2006 08:30 PM

I am Electronic Wolf. I called you a messed up Horatio Sanz.

Okay, no more off-topic posts.

I think the hardest thing younger adults have difficulty dealing with is authority..
At an age when you are confident you know more that everyone, you don't seem to respond to authority very well.
and add to the mix when you get a Mod who is 18-19, not much older, they may have a slight inclination to abuse their Mod powers...
When a Mod bans someone or does whatever he does for mx forum, there really shouldn't be any questions.
When my boss says he wants a report on Thursday, it is not my place to argue with him & tell him, I think I should turn it in on Friday...
Cause he would just say, sure, after you turn your report in on Friday, just go home for good, cause your fired..
We ALL have to learn to repect authority, regardless of our age & Backgrounds..

Kyle 11-20-2006 08:40 PM

Jeremy: I realise that a lot of the time you do spend on the site is cleaning up problems and improving, but I really hope that you don't miss the good things which your site does.

Not only does MX introduce lots of people into lots of new and interesting music, but the community here has helped people in other ways aswell. For example the L&R thread has genuinely helped people with their perosnal/social issues, I consider that a huge acchievment for a website to have such a positive impact on people's lives.

The review section here (and forums to an extent) have also dramatically improved my skills as a writer, and I am extremely grateful for this. Outside of MX I have discussed with other users via msn their writing, and I know that there are others which owe a lot to the website.

Although I havn't really posted in an instrument forum in a year, many people are helped every day in learning to play.

On top of all this, I generally have a good time posting here. I do it to learn about music, improve my writing, recieve advice and there are a fair few users here who really make me laugh.

I guess what i'm trying to say is don't let the problems with the site make you forget of all the positives. I for one, would be a different person had I nevr found this site, and that's an amazing thing. For the most part, you do a great job and you are appreciated. :)

i was just really bored that day :), sorry. I don't think you are a bad mod (I don't know if you're good either), but you are most probably a good person irl.

STOP DA HATE! IT'S THE INTERNETS! LET'S ALL JUST HAVE ONE BIG HUGE E-HUG AND FORGET ABOUT IT! TYPE "/ehugs' if you want to join in on the fun and love!

We need more mods. I have a few people I would suggest too. Alex being one of them. I think he'd be a good mod.

Dammit, I had a reply to this, but I accidentally copy/pasted something else when the site crashed for a bit.

Here's the Cliffnotes:

I agree with the first part, but now there are threads where you can do this until Site comes back (I'm inclined to believe that it will at some point in the future... remember GD being gone for a month or two?). And there's really no way of skating around this part, but if you have a problem with mods in the forums you frequent, then you should still post in those threads. If they're being unreasonable, then go to another alternative: asking another mod to check in on that forum and have a look at the situation. No old dudes blowing each other, no photographs of a girl looser than Nicole Ritchie after a visit to a prison playground, none of that stuff, heh.

As for the first part of your second part (heh), not every mod is a wuss like that. I've insulted mods all the time (one of my all-time favorite exchanges was between me and DFelon) without feeling sorry for what I said. Yes, some mods are soft and more prone to bailing out their friends, but I speak from experience that not every mod is like that. Hopefully you can find someone reliable and responsible, although I do question why you feel the need to bring up so many problems, to be honest.

And thanks for that second part, although it's weird coming from you seeing as how you thought it was funny when it happened. But cool all the same now, really.
