Tom Petty anyone?
|
I like the Grateful Dead. They sound good so I don't see how people couldn't like them.
edit: yes, Tom Petty is great. |

I only have Full Moon Fever, but it's kickass. My mom told me that today is Tom Petty's birthday. |

My mom told me that today is Tom Petty's birthday.
It looks like it's his birthday, the feature reviews on RYM are all Petty. |
I don't get The Grateful Dead. I got American Beauty off either Badmoon or Woodstock last year, and although I've given it quite a few listens, nothing on it's ever risen above the mediocre for me. Since that was kind of atypical of their sound, I checked out Workingman's Dead, Wake Of The Flood and their self-titled album, and none of them grabbed me either. After that I pretty much gave up trying to check them out further as their back catalogue daunted me. :-\
Have you listened to any of their live albums? Those are the really great ones. |
Oh, so that's how it is.
That is indeed how it is. I actually like the Dead. I think they're a good band. But I don't think they deserve the praise they have. |
Tom Petty anyone?
He's ok. He has a few songs I like, but I don't think I would buy a full album of his. I'm wearing my awesome new Alice Cooper shirt  np: The Pogues - If I Should Fall From Grace With God |
Tom Petty is pretty awesome. And yea, it's his birthday today.
NP: Scientist - Night Of The Living Dead |
I like Tom Petty, I don't listen to him often. I like the Grateful Dead a lot, although I usually just listen to their live albums.
|
It looks as if more people think they're "meh" or bad than the people that like them.
|
I'm a meh when it comes to the Grateful Dead.

There's another.

I'm a "meh."
|
Yep, I like 'em a lot, have pretty much all their studio albums.
:) Anybody have or like Mitch Ryder? |
I like The Grateful Dead quite a bit. I wouldn't call myself a deadhead but I like them a lot.
|
I'll add you.
I dont have all of there studio album's but I have quite a few. I also have quite a few bootlegs. |
Jerry has influenced me and is one of the main reasons I listen to the Dead. I am also a sucker for the vocals. I have quite a bit of affiliated stuff with them(NRPS,Grisman,Jerrys band).

Not enough to be considered a Dead Head would be the answer. |
I'm still here!!
Who was it that posted the Echoes solo? I'm sure it was one of you...anyways, I just listening to it and I really liked it. Good job! I've always wanted to learn so many Pink Floyd songs, but I lose interest too fast in playing other artists songs....I'll learn them and play them a few times, then not play them again for like another few months and usually by that time I've forgetten most of it. The other night we were jamming at my friends, and I couldn't even remember how the intro to In The Flesh? went. It mighta been because I was really stoned though, it took me like half an hour to remember it. |
I tried to get into the Dead, but I've come to the conclusion that Phish > The Dead.
Isn't Phish heavily influenced by The Dead? They probably wouldn't be here if they hadn't.. |
*Echoes solo hero*
Glad you liked it :thumb: NP: John Mayall - So Hard To Share |
Isn't Phish heavily influenced by The Dead?
They probably wouldn't be here if they hadn't..
I'd say Phish was greatly influenced by the Dead. |
Chances are that if you like Phish, the Grateful Dead are bound to grow on you
I never liked the Grateful Dead I used to complain loudly whenever my parents played them I never wanted to be a deadhead, but it just sort of sucked me in slowly, and there was nothing I could do about it. I think I am starting to come to terms with this reality Anyways, is anyone else on an enormous Zappa kick lately? I think this stuff is actually getting me into jazz, something I thought would never happen (Sound familiar?) |
Shcyma(hates the, and likes them, I dont know if this counts)
Well their early Psychedelic material is trash IMO but the Country Rock the made later on tops it's genre. American Beauty ranks as one of my favorite albums. I do think that they're outragiously overrated within this thread though.....Then again people think I horribly overrate Syd Barrett so I'm not one to talk I guess. Grateful Dead are pretty hit or miss.
I like some Porcupine Tree everyonce in awhile, but they seem to be really hit and miss for me. The first track on Voyage 34: The Complete Trip is a masterpiece, but the rest never really grabbed my attention. That album also has a cool concept, it's about a guy who goes on 33 acid trips, then on the 34th he has a bad trip and he goes crazy (or something along those lines).
I think it's about Brian Wilson and his trip that devestated him so bad he stopped writting music.
Am I the only one who thinks Tommy had a really bad concept? :p Eat a Peach is simply one of the best albums I've ever heard. I like "Mountain Jam" more and more each time I hear it. |
I have been downloading enormous amounts of Zappa lately. I seriously need to pick up one of his albums.
|
I have every Zappa album. I had a "Zappa kick" you could say. Listened to a bunch of Zappa.
Listen to his cover of Whippin' Post on "Does Humor Belong In Music". It has some fantastic guitar work. |

Tommy barely has a concept, it's really just a story (I know that's what you meant, just clarifying). I don't think the story is genius, but the music certainly is. For me a lot of times the story just serves as something else to bring the album together while the music makes it a great record.
On the other hand, Tommy can be viewed as having a huge amount of meanings/concepts/interpretations, as Townshend explained in his hundreds of interviews after it came out. While ultimately the story may have fallen short and never reached its full potential, there's no denying that Tommy was ambitious and took the Who to a completley different plane from other rock groups at the time. |
Indeed, very original. Nobody sounds like him. He was amazing for his time. One of my main influences/favorite guitar players.
