Not too bad. There were some really boring pages back there!
Uh classic rock relevance: Can anyone tell me if either Cold Chisel or Midnight Oil come close to be considered classic rock? (I think I need an Australian here).
Yeah they would be... but I'm not sure. They're more 80's bands. Good stuff though. |
Yeah I don't think they were ever big in Canada/USA - not many Aus bands are - but they've been around since the late 70's, and they seem a similar style to some bands liked by people here.
Edit: ah cool, someone who knows... yeah they were prime 80's bands, but they brought out some classic albums. And they both go off live. |
I'll have to check those bands out sometime..
Yeah they would be... but I'm not sure. They're more 80's bands. Good stuff though.
4000th post..! |
Ah! I didnt realise... do you think I wasted it?
Haha. No, it really doesn't matter.
|
Haha... I was away for a week so I'm taking ages to catch up, only just read this...
Edit: Schyma, I find it more disturbing that you get so upset over a creepy internet guy ignoring your posts! :p
I just wanted you to stop being so damn creepy and post....it worked. :) You still check every page huh? :amaze:
I know this is very late Schyma, but I'll definitely back you on the Jim Morrison topic. Some of his lyrics (unknown soldier especially) just put me in a state of awe.
Yea, I was beggining to think I was the only one in here who actualy highly respects his songwritting.
i can but it might take a while, ive got a few other things uploading right now. mind if i do it tomorrow?
No problem thanks alot. :) |
Late, I know, but I prefer Robert Hunter's songwriting over Jim Morrison's. I respect what he did, and he was one of the greatest performers of all time, but I'd rank Roger Waters, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Robert Hunter, and even someone like Jeff Buckley above him.
|
i sent out bob marley's live at the roxy for schyma. i THINK i sent it to everyone, if i missed you, give me your email address and i'll send it out.
edit: mmm, jeff buckley. i miss my old avatar. edit: i see, no one cares about my generosity. jerks. or maybe youre all in school. crazy high school kids. |
i just got repped again. im so awesome.
It was probably for that erogenous zones comment in Alt/Indie :p Oh god...this is horrible. The day of Alice Cooper and I wake up with a headache and a stuffed-up nose. If I have a cold....that would blow majorly :upset: np: Bob Dylan - If Not For You. I think this is my new favorite Dylan song! |

I think this is my new favorite Dylan song!
heh, no i got repped last night/this early morning by helping some guy in the pit come up with a simile pertaining to shakespeare for a paper he was writing. i chose, "...as real as dogberry's vocabulary." its from the play, much ado about nothing. dogberry is this fuckup who uses words in incorrect contexts. sorry if youre already familiar with this, i just felt the need to explain. did you get the marley i sent out? i havent slept at all and im on aderrall again. i apologize if this is rambling and long. edit: this just in, i kill threads. more coming up at 11:55 |
Jesus, the one day I don't check mx, you guys do 8 pages of discussion  I'm not reading through all of it, but here's what I caught: "Love In Vain" is my favorite song on Let It Bleed (sometimes tied with "Gimme Shelter"), The Freewheelin' is really good but I'm not sure which Dylan album I'd classify as first at this point, I'll have to make a top ten essential CR albums list later or something.
I'm going to math. Good day to you all. |
i think im too lazy and opinionated to make a top 10 essential list. it would just end up being my favorites.
|
Waters' songwritting is almost unimpressive and always predictable. Seriously....probablly the most overrated songwritter ever. I'm not saying his lyrics are bad he just gets way too much credit for them. I love later Pink Floyd just for the record.
|
I've always thought that The Grateful Dead were musically one of the best bands of the Classic Rock era (or ever), but their lyrics have never really stood out as amazing. I'd rate Zeppelins lyrics over the Grateful Deads actually....some people may find that offensive I suppose, but it's just my opinion.
np: Pink Floyd - Let There Be More Light. |

I heard that first, and I found the Dylan one when I was looking for CDs to put in my CD Alarm Clock, of course the album "New Morning" seemed appropriate I agree about the Dead's lyrics I think that lyrically, my head would explode if I encoundered a better team than Lennon/McCartney |
Yeah Lennon and McCartney are unbeatable in every way possible, although I think Dylan still has them beat lyric-wise.
Alright last night I had two different types of weed, both extremely potent. I packed a large bowl and smoked it and I was more screwed up, visually, than I ever have been before from just marijuana. I get high like every day, so it doesn't affect me the way it used to....I usually don't experience many visuals, except for the occasional blinking lights, moving objects etc that are probably just from my imagination, not the marijuana. Last night though, after this bowl, I was sitting in my room, which was dark except for a stick of incense and a candle...but when I looked at the incense there was a glowing orange and green checkerboard surrounding it, as if I was looking through a very long tube at my incense, and the tube had a checkerboard pattern on the inside. Then, I laid down and looked at the incense stick, all I could see was the glowing tip...and it was floating around in cirlces. It was so weird. I was experiencing stuff like that for the next two hours while I was watching A Long and Winding Road and then a documentary on the Stones in the 70's. It was a really cool Stones documentary dealy, I've seen A Long and Winding Road before and although it's good...I liked the Stones one more. |

Wow, thats... harsh. I find his lyrics to be (on the most part) rather brilliant, conveying bleak dreary themes very well. Time, Pigs, Nobody Home are excellent examples. If I were to find fault with him, its that he rarely wrote lyrics that weren't dark and dreary. I wouldn't put him on par with Bob Dylan or Neil Young though. |

I agree with you, Waters is actually definitely in my top five for favourite songwriters. (I probably like him a lot more than you do). I find that it's hard to compare him to other songwriters (like Bob Dylan or Neil Young, that's actually the perfect example), because he was more like a beat poet...his art wasn't just in what he wrote, but how he delivered it (his music seemed to match his lyrics perfectly, and he really wasn't bounded by obstacle that would hinder his need to musically and lyrically express exactly whatever he was feeling/thinking)...and although I think Dylan does exactly the same thing just on a more simple level. I still like Dylan more. Heh heh. edit - I hate these damn WinZip files because the albums don't play from song to song...oh wait, solo...and I always forget to click on the next song, does that make sense? Anyways, I just came back to say I'm finally listening to Jugband Blues (I had Saucerful of Secrets on, I'm not sure if I mentioned it) after like an hour and a half. Very great song! |

Yeah, you pretty much described it perfectly. Np: More Than a Feeling - Boston. This song is so d'amn catchy... |

They do for me, did you unzip them? |
Lunch said Townsend was the greatest songwritter ever .
I actually had the restraint not to bring him up:p |
They do for me, did you unzip them?
Haha, the thought never occured to me! Boots of Spanish Leather (I'm listening to the Live at Carnegie Hall 1963 version) is such a great song. |
I actually had the restraint not to bring him up:p
He's definitly one of them... Man, I had Twist and Shout stuck in my head all day today. It drove me nuts. Np: Veteran of the Psychic Wars - Blue Oyster Cult |
I don't really think any members of The Who had especially spectacular songwriting in terms of lyrics...I mostly listen to the music when I listen to The Who. They are actually one of the few bands I listen to that I'm like that with.
|
What is a good Bob Dylan album to grab after The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan?
|
Okay this is really late but I think Morrison writes good lyrics but there not as good as Neil Young, Bob Dylan, perhaps even Roger Waters........(maybe, maybe not).
And I also dont think the Grateful Deads lyrics are that great either. I agree with Arthur Lee though. EDIT-get Blonde on Blonde |

I personally really like Townsends lyrics. Not all his songs are that great (Pinball Wizard is almost cringe worthy) but Won't Get Fooled Again, Substitute, and 5'15 all have great lyrics. |
Have you heard the Harrison cover?
Not yet. I hear it's good. Ok...I took a hot bath and a nap, and I feel somewhat better. I'm going to be able to make it to the show, luckily. |
For another Dylan album, I'd say The Times They Are A-Changing (folkish) or Highway 61 Revisited (electric). Depending on what style you like (Freewheelin' is folkish too)
EDIT: I did not know Harrison's "If Not For You" was a cover, that song's sweet! What Dylan album was it originally on? |
So far I've only ever listened to Bob Dylan's folk material, but I'm open to the electric as well.
|
So far I've only ever listened to Bob Dylan's folk material, but I'm open to the electric as well.
I highly suggest Blood on the Tracks to be your next choice, it has the same beautiful storytelling as his folk albums (of which I also suggest The Times They Are A-Changin'), but it's with a full band...like his less folky albums (of which I suggest Bringin' It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisted, and Blonde on Blonde). I suppose that should be enough to give you a general idea of some directions you could take. |
Does anyone in here think Arthur Lee is extremly underrated? Listin to Forever Changes and tell me he's not a great songwritter. Odd lyrics at times but the music is up there with the best of them.

Yes!
My favourite would be "The Red Telephone". (lyric-wise) |

Recently new favourite GD song-Franklin's Tower
It has cool lyrics. |
If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung, Would you hear my voice come thru the music? Would you hold it near as it were your own? It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken; Perhaps they're better left unsung. I don't know, don't really care. Let there be songs to fill the air. Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. Reach out your hand if your cup be empty, If your cup is full may it be again. Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men. There is a road, no simple highway, Between the dawn and the dark of night, And if you go, no one may follow, That path is for your steps alone. Ripple in still water, when there is no pebble tossed, Nor wind to blow. You who choose to lead must follow, But if you fall, you fall alone. If you should stand, then who's to guide you? If I knew the way I would take you home.
These are some fantastic lyrics! These are some of my favorite lyrics to tell you the truth. It's too bad almost none of their songs came a mile within it. |
Did anybody listen to Ballad of Easy Rider? :(
Franklin's Tower is one of my favorites off of Blues For Allah. |
Yeah Ripple has great lyrics. It's one of my favourite Grateful Dead songs.
