Creedance Clearwater Revival-Cosmo's Factory
Emerson, Lake & Palmer-Tarkus
Yes-Fragile, Close to the Edge
Queen-A Night at the Opera
The Rolling Stones-Sticky Fingers
Neil Young-Everyone Knows This is Nowhere
Rush-Fly by Night?
Supertramp-Crime of the Century?

I didn't see any of those.
Those are good aditions, although I'd say Brain Salid Surgery (ELP) and 2112 (Rush) really need to be on there.

One of the most underrated albums of all time.
essential
I don't know why you guys throw out like 30 albums and label them "essential". It's not essential if you just put every above average album up there.

Essential Classic Rock Albums
-----------------------------
Allman Brothers Band - Live at Fillmore East
Allman Brothers Band - Eat a Peach
Beatles, The - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
Beatles, The - White Album
Beatles, The - Revolver
Beck, Jeff - Blow by Blow
Bob Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited
Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
CCR- Chronicles
Doors, The - s/t
Grateful Dead - American Beauty
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland
Led Zeppelin - I
Love - Forever Changes
Neil Young - Harvest
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Rolling Stones - Sticky Fingers
Velvet Underground - Velvet Underground and Nico
Who, The - Tommy
Zappa, Frank - Freak Out!
Zombies, The- Odessey and Oracle

As you can see I tried to be as diverse and honest as I could and put the truely "essential" Classic Rock albums.

"Essential" is very subjective. Personally, I think you're missing a lot of great albums on your list.

Lunch 10-18-2005 03:56 PM

The "Essential" list turned into the "Classic Rock Albums You Own List". And Schyma, that's probably the most (/only :P) unbiased thing you've ever posted.

I also see essential as being above great, I think we'd all agree tons are classic rock albums are great but not very many can truly be essential.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 10-18-2005 03:58 PM

Ahh...thank you? :p

Of course but I tried to get the most important, popular, ground breaking albums. What albums were you thinking of?

Illmatic 10-18-2005 04:00 PM

Bob Marley's Legend album =

Call me a crochety purist bastard, but I don't think greatest hits albums shuld be put on a list of essential albums, you know?

Here are some others I didn't see on there that I may as well throw on:
The Rolling Stones - Beggars Banquet
The Allman Brothers Band - Beginnings
Bob Dylan - Another Side of Bob Dylan
Bob Marley & the Wailers - Live at the Roxy (not classic rock per se, but still an essential from that "period")
Chuck Berry - The Great Twenty-Eight (whoops, now I'm contradicting myself :-\)
David Bowie - Ziggy Stardust
David Bowie - Heroes
David Bowie - Low
Jeff Beck - Truth
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland
Jimi Hendrix Experience - Axis: Bold as Love
Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsies
The Band - Music From Big Pink
The Beach Boys - Pet Sounds

Lunch 10-18-2005 04:00 PM

Mine probably would've looked similar to your list as long as I made it from a subjective viewpoint.

Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's, White Album, Revolver
Who - Tommy, Live at Leeds
ABB - Live at Fillmore
Grateful Dead - American Beauty, Workingman's Dead
Pink Floyd - DSotM, WYWH, The Wall
Jimi Hendrix - Electric Ladyland, AYE?
Dylan - Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, Blood on the Tracks
Led Zeppelin - I, PG

Around here is where the lind becomes blurry between the essentials and the great. I think these are the bare beginner's guide to classic rock albums.

JonG 10-18-2005 04:01 PM

Isn't CCR Chronicles a greatest hits? I'd choose Cosmo's Factory over that for ground breakin'.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 10-18-2005 04:04 PM

Some of these aren't my favorite by that particular artist but I think it's the most popular and most important.

As Woodstock said, "essential" is subjective...I don't think VU&Nico is a very good album at all, much less an essential one...The Stones and Dylan have put out stronger albums than Sticky Fingers and Freewheelin', respectively, you all know how I feel about the Grateful Dead, I wouldn't recommend Sgt. Pepper's and White Album over Rubber Soul and Abbey Road, and I haven't even listened to the albums by The Zombies or Love

Lunch 10-18-2005 04:07 PM

Essential isn't necessarily favorite albums, I view it as the most important and usually the most popular classic rock albums, as if someone asking to get into classic rock for the first time asked for a list of ten CR albums.

Lunch 10-18-2005 04:11 PM

Yea, I wouldn't attempt it, I was just trying to give an example as to what I meant.
Essential isn't necessarily favorite albums, I view it as the most important and usually the most popular classic rock albums, as if someone asking to get into classic rock for the first time asked for a list of ten CR albums.
In that case, the "essential" Jimi Hendrix album is usually considered to be Are You Experienced?, the "essential" Who album is usually considered to be Who's Next, the "essential" Stones album is usually considered to be Exile on Main St., and so on.

Jacaranda 10-18-2005 04:12 PM

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Velvet Underground - Loaded
Black Sabbath - Paranoid
T. Rex - Electric Warrior
Otis Redding - The Dock of the Bay
Lou Reed - Transformer
New York Dolls - New York Dolls
Santana - Santana
The Kinks - Something Else By the Kinks
MC5 - Kick Out the Jams

Those are a few I could think of that I don't think any one has mentioned. Some may not be considered CR by some people but whatever.

Exile on Main Street
Tommy
Highway 61 Revisited (not my favorite, but definitely the most "essential"
Dark Side of the Moon (same as above)
Wheels of Fire

My 10 Essential's:

The Stones - Exile on Main Street
Beatles - Sgt. Peppers
Velvet Underground - Loaded
Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
The Who - Quadrophenia
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
The Zombies - Odessey and Oracle
David Bowie - Diamond Dogs

I put H61R just because Like A Rolling Stone is probably his most popular song.

Broken Arrow 10-18-2005 04:23 PM

I like what I'm seeing but one album I didtn see was:

Quicksilver Messenger Service-Happy Trails

Nothing, I just don't understand how you can think its "crap" or how most of their albums are. I'm sensing someone who's only heard 2-3 and listened to them once. Maybe if you supported why its crap I could understand.

Leper 10-18-2005 04:24 PM

I know there aren't many U2 fans in here, but I'd say The Joshua Tree fits the "essential" category.

I find their music really dull and boring, and Mick Jagger is another untalented lead singer. The only stuff they did do that I like is most of their singles from the mid-60's.

Illmatic 10-18-2005 04:26 PM
I know there aren't many U2 fans in here, but I'd say The Joshua Tree fits the "essential" category.
I wouldn't.

JonG 10-18-2005 04:26 PM

Joshuas Tree was released in 1987, not what I call Classic Rock. But neither is Johnny Cash American IV.

Broken Arrow 10-18-2005 04:27 PM
Hell yeah. Definitely The Beatles' best album, and I'd put it comfortably in my top 10 albums of all time...it's one of the few albums that's always guaranteed a place in there whenever I make a list, pretty much.

I actually agree with this. The Stones are pretty much my ultimate example of a band that makes great singles, but not particularly good albums. Exile On Main Street is probably my favourite Stones album, but there were so many bands that made better albums from that time in my opinion.
But did you notice how you put Revolver in their twice?

No order-
Abbey Road
DSotM
Pink Moon
Forever Changes
Electric Ladyland
Bringin' it all Back Home
Workingman's Dead
Happy Trails
On the Beach
After the Goldrush

Illmatic 10-18-2005 04:28 PM

Ehehehehehehe...."poon".

And yeah, I was hinting at how Revolver was on there twice...I assume that was a typo.
I find their music really dull and boring, and Mick Jagger is another untalented lead singer. The only stuff they did do that I like is most of their singles from the mid-60's.
Oh and for an example-If I feel like chilling out and working on a class project ( ), I could put in Forty Licks Disk 1, and never have to get up to skip a track, where on most of their Lp's I would be constantly getting up, and finding a track I like more.

robo2448 10-18-2005 04:29 PM

I love Exile. I think its probably the Stones best but everything from Beggar's Banquet- Exile is amazing. Well Beggar's Banquet isn't quite as good but is still excellent. Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed, and Exile are all about equal with Beggar's Banquet and Some Girls right behind them. I go back and forth on favorite Stones albums though.

And The Stones never mastered the "concept album" theory, all of their albums had some filler, but most of the stuff was excellent. I'd say Sticky Fingers has the least amount of filler.

I like Jagger's voice a lot.

I agree that Joshua Tree is "essential" but definitely wouldn't be on my list if I could only pick 10.

Jacaranda 10-18-2005 04:29 PM
I find their music really dull and boring, and Mick Jagger is another untalented lead singer. The only stuff they did do that I like is most of their singles from the mid-60's.
