What exactly is Calexico?
Few play what Calexico do, but I guess you can label them Americana, Roots Rock or maybe even Country Rock. Not one of those suits them completely correctly though. |

Find the Calexico thread I made in this forum. The mp3's should not have expired yet. |
So today I randomly bought a 13th Floor Elevators album (Bull of the Woods to be specific). So far it's pretty good. I decided to make an impulse buy of a random band and take a chance.
Scyhma: Have you ever heard The Who Sell Out? I was listening to it earlier and had a feeling you might enjoy it more than the other Who you've heard. Obviously I'm not going to make them your favorite band, but their earlier albums are often overshadowed by Q, Who's Next, Live at Leeds, Tommy. If you've heard it already then nevermind, but I could send it to you or something if you're ever interested. |
I heard Bull of the Woods is OK. I'm surprised to see someone that has found a 13th Floor Elevators album in a store. You should get their S/T or Easter Everywhere there both good quality psych albums.
Yes, I heard it was slightly psychedelic. Yea, I'd love to hear it. :) |

Yea I've heard those are good, I just felt like taking a chance and buying the only one they had. It's been good so far.
Yes, I heard it was slightly psychedelic. Yea, I'd love to hear it.
I'm not sure you would find it very psychedelic, but there are elements of it and on a whole it's much different from Who's Next or any of the later stuff. |
Yea, big band and swing music is great.
Swing rocks my socks. One of my favorite swing bands is The Brian Setzer Orchestra, anyone heard of them? np: Neil Young - Down By The River |

How long is it supposed to be?
I'm not sure you would find it very psychedelic, but there are elements of it and on a whole it's much different from Who's Next or any of the later stuff.
I don't care if it's not psychedelic I just want to hear good music. :) |
That Crossroads is live, and it's supposed to be 4:16 or so.
I think it's good music, just be open-minded and ready to have fun, not necessarily take The Who seriously on this one (I'm uploading it right now). |
Is that "Crossroads" supposed to be live? How long is it supposed to be?
yeah, theres no studio recording of crossroads from cream. ive read somewhere that its an edit of a longer version though. which makes me upset. |
I love The Who Sell Out, its very creative.
The commercials are hilarious |
Oh ok I thought it was longer than that. I liked "Spoonful" and "Crossroads" but I could do without "Toad". I respect them more for the musicianship now but I don't think they're as great as you claim them to be but good none the less.
|
I was at work the other day, at a grocery store, and House of the Rising Son came on the radio. This guy at the checkout line started talking about it and was amazed that I actually knew the song and knew who it was by. Needless to say, I got a decent tip for taking his stuff out. So see, listen to classic rock, and yo ass will get paid. Straight up.

Well yea, but it stands as proof the Ginger Baker is a great drummer. I really love their instrumentals and I think it's really too bad that they couldn't have made more material. |
I'm not sure if this is going to work, but here goes.

That was who I was most impressed by. That guy is a badass drummer.

I'm pretty sure it's the whole album, the folder is just labled "01 Armenia City In the Sky". I could be wrong though.
|
I love Ginger Baker's drumming. He has some of the coolest drum fills I've ever heard.

and that he paved the way for drummers like bonham. toad came out before moby dick but moby dick was clearly influenced by it. it should be recognized more. |
He did more than pave the way for Bonham. Bonham took so much of his drumming from Baker, in all aspects of his playing, aside from just Moby Dick.

true, but i was concentrating specifically on moby dick. anyway, baker needs to get more respect from the general public. at least as much as his contemporaries, bonham and moon and what not. |
Baker is the source for all the drummers in the hard rock bands of the 70s
|
Well thanks for the music Lunch I'll listin to it tomorrow. Goodnight MX.
|
Yea, no problem.
Can someone recommend a good ELP album to start with? |
I listened to The Who Sell Out up to I Can See For Miles than felt like a change. I'm listening to Band of Gypsies now.

It's interesting, to say the least. The extra tracks that come on the CD make it really worth it though (everything after Rael 1). |
