internal affairs

edit: scratch that... both are awesome (desire is more recent)

Rams 12-03-2008 03:49 PM
best pharoahe monch album if ive never heard him before?
Organized Konfusion self-titled album.
eh... black thought is probably one of the most underrated mcs around... but different strokes.
He's really generic and doesn't have a lot of emotion in his voice. For the new Roots sound I keep thinking someone like Akir would work well, and then his boring voice comes over and is meh.

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 03:50 PM

Organized Konfusion - Stress

my only 5/5 hip-hop album.

Tyler 12-03-2008 03:51 PM

yeah, I agree (with Rams)

I haven't heard Equinox yet though, is it as "bad" as I've heard?

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 03:51 PM
i think both had their time in the late 90's/early 2000's... i just wish they would have been consistent. kweli's delivery/ style seems like it's changed dramatically since reflection/eternal. the production on ear drum is spot on; it's just kweli that didn't do it for me.

i can definitely see the guest comment though, especially now being past their respective primes.
i just remember how stoked i was when i heard him tear it up on Jaylib.

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 03:52 PM
yeah, I agree (with Rams)

no, just overstuffed and lots of filler. its basically OK trying to make a concept album.

big80smullet 12-03-2008 03:54 PM
Organized Konfusion - Stress

k im getting this. hopefully i like it

kingsoby1 12-03-2008 03:55 PM

haven't listened to OK yet tbh... will have to check that out. jaylib was definitely tight; at least we still have madlib, black milk, and a few others to keep progressing production.

im surprised you only have one 5/5 hiphop album.

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 04:02 PM

i only have 15 5/5s.

OK is better than Monch's solo career to be honest.

Rams 12-03-2008 04:03 PM

There are a lot of good beat makers today.

kingsoby1 12-03-2008 04:04 PM

there are a lot of good beat makers, but not a lot of progressive beat makers.

yeah, understandable, i have like 10 5s or less, but am more into hiphop than anything else... deltron, el-p, and the roots round out my 5-rated hiphop.

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 04:05 PM

omg KANYE!

kingsoby1 12-03-2008 04:07 PM

6/5

Rams 12-03-2008 04:09 PM
there are a lot of good beat makers, but not a lot of progressive beat makers.
"Progressive" sounds like an euphemism for "bad"

kingsoby1 12-03-2008 04:11 PM

what

Rams 12-03-2008 04:16 PM

What the hell differentiates a "good" beat maker from a "progressive" one?

Iai 12-03-2008 04:17 PM

Of the ones I've heard, I'd go OK - Desire - Stress - Internal Affairs in that order.

edit: wow there was a lot of posts in the last 5 minutes

Tyler 12-03-2008 04:19 PM

Goes:

OK > Stress > Internal Affairs > Desire for me

but the margin between each is minimal

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 04:20 PM

the Stress > the Desire

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 04:20 PM

lol.

Stress > Desire = Internal Affairs = OK > The Equinox

even Monch's mixtapes are incredible

username345 12-03-2008 04:21 PM

Stress (joint best hip-hop album with 'Illmatic' if you ask me, closely followed by 'OK', 'Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde' and 'The Low End Theory') > OK > Desire > Internal Affairs

Tyler 12-03-2008 04:34 PM

I don't like Illmatic that much to be honest. I mean I like it, but it's a 3.5 at best for me.

Iai 12-03-2008 04:34 PM
'Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde'
You know, shamefully, I still haven't heard this album.

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 04:36 PM

i'm sure you've heard singles. DILLARIFFIC
You know, shamefully, I still haven't heard this album.
It's really great. I didn't like it much at first, it's very upbeat, but it grew on me a lot. The lyrics are hilarious, the rapping's great & it has a cool 90's jazzy vibe to it.
I don't like Illmatic that much to be honest. I mean I like it, but it's a 3.5 at best for me.
It's the first rap album I ever really liked.

kingsoby1 12-03-2008 05:03 PM
What the hell differentiates a "good" beat maker from a "progressive" one?
what differentiates a "good" rock group from a "progressive" one... or any genre for that matter. pushing the envelope my friend...

progressive producers: madlib, black milk, el-p, dilla

awesome producers: jake one, statik selektah, premier, list goes on

there's no question that what the 4 above mentioned progressive minded guys have done in the past few years has definitely shaped the face of hiphop, catapulting it into its next phase. i really don't know what to say if you can't see that. that isn't to say that i dont love jake one, or any number of guys, they're just not progressive minded.

pixiesfanyo 12-03-2008 05:31 PM

i'd say premo was progressive once and he was so much that he can just sit and make the same beat forever because he is that good.

kingsoby1 12-03-2008 06:05 PM

yeah definitely... he really did a lot for the genre. it's not like he sucks now; he's still super awesome, but he's not really evolving his style.

kingsoby1 12-04-2008 02:19 PM

Just put up a review of the Blue Sky Black Death-produced album Gutta - "Heads Will Roll"

http://www.sputnikmusic.com/review_28246

I'm really disappointed :(

JonG 12-04-2008 03:41 PM
what is some good old school hip hop. as good as or better than regulate by warren g (if thats even possible)
Pete Rock and CL Smooth
Ultramagnetic MC's
Eric B. And Rakim
Jungle Brothers
EPMD

kingsoby1 12-04-2008 03:45 PM

EPMD's new joint is decent.

anyone else make beats around here

Interstate 12-07-2008 12:14 PM

I enjoyed the new Kanye West album even though it's completely different in style to his others. Kept reading bad reviews of it but it didn't put me off.

ATM 12-07-2008 07:10 PM

Anyone like Lords of the Underground?

JonG 12-07-2008 07:35 PM

i cant really get into it at all, i mean love lockdown is a pretty good song but the rest of it just didnt click with me.
then again it took me a very long time to enjoy most of his stuff so it may grow on me, although i do much prefer him to rap rather than sing
