Woah, woah, fellas.
By the time we're done with WYWH we'll probably forget about your dibs and we dont' want to have to look back. The Wall is far too long though. And Animals makes more sense if people have read the George Orwell book "Animal Farm" because that's what the album is based on (I think..) So let's just stick with what we have. |
Yeah, Animals is somewhat based on Animal Farm (great book btw), but, as someone informed me when I posted this earlier, Animal Farm is a criticism of communism, Animals is a criticsm of capitalism.
Sorry about the dibs, I just wanted to be sure I could write something... |

The Wall is long, yes, but it is also perfect. I honestly believe that it is the best album ever created. I know, it's a bold statement, but it's what I believe. |

Just keep posting and checking up with the thread, I'm sure you'll get to write something :).
The Wall is long, yes, but it is also perfect. I know, it's a bold statement, but it's what I believe.
I feel that we don't really have to do "The Wall" since there is already a MASSIVE and brilliant (IMO) analysis on The Wall and the movie that came with it. http://home.mchsi.com/%7Ettint/Intro.html If you take the time to read through it, I'm sure you'll agree. |
Yea that is brilliant. And way to keep them in line Malcom. No dibs until WYWH is done.
|
Alrighty then. Dual analyses will be fine. So TheDMV and I can both do WYWH, etc.
It's fine doing SOYCD together, since it basically is a split song. You may want to analyse the musical content of all 9 parts, so it may be a big job. If you'd like, I can write down the times all 9 parts start... And thankyou to MYR and Lunch. Guys, I won't be on regularly till Uni ends, so thanks for keeping everyone in line. Once all of DSOTM is done, then you can go ahead and nominate the next album, and when the first WYWH analysis is in, you can start picking songs. |

/sad When's uni done? |

Then it's going to be harder than what I expected. But, I'll try, unless someone else would like to have a go at it. And please, write down the times of the 9 parts, as much as I love the song, I really don't know that elitist division of the song. |
In three weeks.
So, you guys should consider doing the Wall, simply because I think personal meanings are jsut as important as the message Roger was trying to impart upon the audience. |
I feel like such a leech(sp?) at times in this thread :-/ That is why im gonna upload a bootleg of Dogs during their last show of the Animals tour (the show where Roger spits at the crowd) for you guys.

"Animals" wasn't about animal fa\rm, it was Water's comment on society. It was a while ago i read it, but i don't even remember there being a dog.
|
oh, and is someone going to link to all of the posts making uop the lyrical analysis of dark side?
|
Wooow, that's a good review/interpretation of the song (although it isn't my favourite floyd song by far)
|
very nice interpetration Med57, after reading that I agree completely, never think of songs uhm so deep :S :P
|
are all songs on dark side spoken for? and wish...?
i tell ya, when we come to do meddle or saucerful, then i shall be in teh zone. |
Very nice Med!
I can't wait for The Final Cut. |
Med57, nice. It was the best one yet (better then mine) but the one thing I want to know is about how it fits into the album as a whole. What does it contribute to Dark Side?
EDIT: and to the guy who posted the '77 montreal animals concert, that stuff is gold. I know a guy who was at that concert (and is also an amazingly good guitarist) and he told me that it was a terrible concert and no one was listening to the music, just screaming. Also, the pigs on the wing solo is by their backup guitarist Snowy White |
Great analysis Med, I thought it was really well thought out and well presented.
|
Med for President!
That was an excellent reveiw. I had never thought about the lyrics that way, partially because I could never understand all of them :p That song is one of the songs my dad recommended to me and that got me into Floyd. Great Work :thumb: |
That was deep, nice job Med. No less than what I'd expect from you.
|
um, I WANT TO SEE THE OTHERS!!!!
heh... |
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it’s sinking
And racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in the relative way, but you’re older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
to me, this means "if you try to stop time catching up on you, you're wasting it even more trying". |
Come on people, we need your analysis.
|
While we wait, check out this crazy Wall shirt I just bought
Come on people, we need your analysis.
This is a very great link here. If you're not familer with the Syd Barrett story I suggest you read it. |
I assume you mean me. :p
Whoever owes them. I know you're busy at uni so I wasn't trying to give you a hard time, but people are anxious to get going on WYWH. |
Brain Damage
The lunatic is on the grass The lunatic is on the grass remembering games and daisy chains and laughs got to keep the loonies on the path
This line basically refers to the fact that the man, who is the focus of Dark Side Of The Moon, is remembering his childhood, and is possibly slipping into senility, or another kind of infantilism.
The lunatic is in the hall the lunatics are in the hall the paper holds their folded faces to the floor and every day the paper boy brings more
This one is more of a stab at the politicians. The lunatic is in the hall, the lunatics are in the hall refers to the Prime Minister, and his parliament. The newspaper prints their faces with sometimes deriding or critical headlines, hence lowering their self opinion. The paper boy bringing more could refer to the fact that the lunacy never ends, or that the public gets tired of the self-importance of these elected officials.
And if the dam breaks open many years too soon and if there is no room upon the hill and if your head explodes with dark forebodings too I'll see you on the dark side of the moon
Basically, this stanza, and the very last one, both have the same message. If you realise the state of the world, and see the terrible situation that we are all in, then you can leave it to go to the Dark Side of the Moon, i.e. death. The dam is basically the all the terrible things in the world, and when you realise they are there, if you don’t have a loved one to lean on, i.e. drag you from depression, you will probably have morbid thoughts.
The lunatic is in my head The lunatic is in my head You raise the blade, you make the change. You rearrange me till I'm sane. You lock the door, And throw away the key. There's someone in my head but it's not me…
This line is perhaps one of the pivotal lines of DSotM. This basically refers to the fact that the subject of the album, our protagonist, is not actually insane. Or, in other words, he doesn’t believe he is sane, he believes that another influence (the outside world) is making him act strangely. The outside world, however, doesn’t care, so they simply cut and mould the person into a more “sane” human being.
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear you shout and no one seems to hear and if the band you're in starts playing different tunes I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.
Again, the realisation that society isn’t a pretty place drives you to the edge. If you have no one to talk to, and your expectations of the world don’t match reality, you might as well escape. If anyone knows what the spoken part is, I will gladly review that. This is my personal opinion, so feel free to discuss any deviations from what the song is meant to mean... Eclipse to come. :) |
Very nice job Riva :thumb:
One of the few floyd songs i can actually sing, so I am fimiliar with the lyrics very well. This song and eclipse sum up the entire album very well. |
So far we have:
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (I-V) - Slowhand, Moaner Welcome To The Machine - Bennyl Have A Cigar - Robo2248 Wish You Were Here - HeavyRiva/Malcolm Young Rock Shine On You Crazy Diamond (VI-IX) - Slowhand That leaves a spot on WTTM, HAC and SOYCD 6-9. |
i take shine on 1-5.
|
Dibs your WYWH song now. Two people per song. I pick Wish You Were Here.
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (I-V) Welcome To The Machine Have A Cigar Wish You Were Here - HeavyRiva Shine On You Crazy Diamond (VI-IX)
I'll do Have A Cigar. |
med got something wrong in his "featured artist" thing.
the voice in the great gig in the sky does NOT say "If you can hear this whispering you're dieing". It actually says "I never said I was frightened of dieing", in response to the card "why are you frightened of dieing?", the same question asked to the guy who said "There's no need for it, you've got to go sometime." |
does anyone know what the song "any colour you like" was about? creativity?
i know all the rest. |
We already have the first set of dibs for WYWH...
SOYCD(All parts until further notice): Slowhand, Moaner(1-5) Welcome to the Machine: Bennyl Have a Cigar: MYR, Robo2448 WYWH: Riva
And now it's updated. |
