You could live in a shipping container like the hacker chick in that X-Files episode.
this turns me on for some reason

gaslight 01-06-2009 08:03 PM

Woodchipper.

Also, won't you need some sort of crane to lift the shipping containers 4' off the ground?

Also if I could suggest something, do double doors for it. Not like, two side by side, but door then another door. You get that in rehearsal studios and stuff. Top shelf recording studios often have just one insanely thick door. Doors are a key weakness in soundproofing.

horseypie 01-06-2009 08:14 PM

just stick em together with zip ties and race tape

Meatplow 01-06-2009 08:30 PM
i dunno it depends how thick the roof is, but a fair weld should be strong enough. run a beam down the inside underneath the seam will be fairly strong as well.

its gunna be a fair bit of labour oxycutting and welding it together...theres some dollars in that unless you have a heaps nice boilermaker mate or something.
That’s why I thought of external support. Finding a 40’ beam would be hard, especially when I want to keep to keep costs lower. I’m not planning on trusting the weld. I know a few people who are practical, but this is a long term project so I’m almost tempted to do a night-course or something to find out how to do stuff myself. I don’t have a deadline, it’s just something I really want to do in some form [build the studio]. Key thing is acquiring as much as I can at low-cost/free/trade-for-case-of-beer situations.
I'd recommend brick stilt footings with I-beam joists. That'll be the support structure, the containers will merely sit on it.

Don't rely on that middle weld joint to hold any structural integrity, because it wont.

I think anything you do will need council approval, because it sounds like a pretty serious structure. Plus, if you want to record in something, you'd want to avoid anything with parallel walls, as they can introduce nasty reverberations - but this can easily be avoided with a few angled plywood panels underneath any insulation. I've got a spare shipping container in my backyard that you can have if you want, but it's currently full of dead refugees - so you'll need to give us a hand to get rid of them if you want it.
I was thinking something like that for a base [footings with I-beam joists]. I just want to make sure I don’t get water in really, so I dunno. I thought of doing extra large footings, then filling the remaining space with compacted fill so it’s got no space under it, but not a costly slab.

I’ll treat the rooms inside once it’s done to ensure that there’s no parallel walls; it’ll have internal timber walls that I’ll install, and foam over them in parts as well. Like you said, they’ll be angled on some sides.

I’d take it off your hands, but I need to buy a house and block first, haha.
this turns me on for some reason
That’s so hot, haz.

I am actually considering living in a shipping container in my mum’s yard while I pay off my mortgage. I’ll make you a tinfoil hat if you visit.
Woodchipper.

Also, won't you need some sort of crane to lift the shipping containers 4' off the ground?

Top shelf recording studios often have just one insanely thick door. Doors are a key weakness in soundproofing.
I guess I will need a crane. I know a crane operator luckily who said he can help.

The plan for entry is to keep the entry on one side [which is 4’x8’2”] but put a traditional door into the otherside for ease of access, which goes directly into the smaller room. To soundproof the big door I'm going to put a false wall inside, and have the door be metal on one side, then basically 12"-deep rubber on the other that fills the same space as the false wall.

gaslight 01-06-2009 10:55 PM

If you need to pave a driveway just strike a deal with Chris and use the ground up bones from his shipping container.
