I think this is a good time to just admire the genius of Frank Zappa.

NP: The Gumbo Variation - Frank Zappa
Thats such a great song, Hot Rats is a masterpiece, that should be in the essential classic rock album list. A bit late.

Woodstock 06-25-2005 12:46 PM

I think Hot Rats is Zappa's best. But, I haven't heard that much by him.

White_heat 06-25-2005 12:48 PM

I like the stuff with The Mother's of Invention more than his solo stuff.

But he has got some great solo albums

ATM 06-25-2005 12:50 PM

Check out what I am going to tonight:

In addition to getting a late-night peek at the exhibit tonight, Joshua White and Gary Panter will be producing a psychedelic light show they're calling "Cosmic Drift." We're told that "Joshua White achieved acclaim in the 1960s for The Joshua Light Show, in which he created kaleidoscopic, mind-bending effects for the likes of Janis Joplin, Frank Zappa, Jimi Hendrix, and the Allman Brothers Band." Groovy! The show will go on rain or shine, and alcohol is prohibited.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 06-25-2005 12:53 PM

I agree, Hot Rats is the best from what I've heard for sure. Haven't heard that much by him but what I have heard I really enjoy. Is Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar any good? I'm downloading it right now and I can't wait 'til it's finished.

TheDMV 06-25-2005 12:56 PM

It's pretty hard to find Funkadelic stuff in Music stores IMO. I've seen a Parliament CD though.

That sounds really cool but you should smoke a blunt before you go though. :thumb:

ATM 06-25-2005 12:57 PM

Don't worry, it's going to be done :)

RobNY 06-25-2005 01:01 PM

Talking about Zappa, I've never heard anything by him. Can someone recommend a song to listen to? (and then an album, but first a few songs)

Oh, and, thanks to everyone in this thread for reminding me I wanted to take a listen through of some allman brothers stuff again. ;)

Shut Up N Play Yer Guitar is one of Zappa's best, it is all solos, 3 disc of it. In all of these 3 CDs he never goes into a wankfest, he has a great sense of melody and rythm during the solos, very interesting and entertaining.

And proof that he is genius

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 06-25-2005 01:04 PM

Download "Willie the Pimp" first and then get Hot Rats. :thumb:

Badmoon 06-25-2005 01:04 PM
James Gang are probably my favorite example od Detroit rock. The drummer and bassist of that band are very underrated. Listen to them closely on any song.
They all jell very well. And the production on Rides Again was done nicely.

I can't wait! :D :D :D

Woodstock 06-25-2005 01:09 PM

All of the Shut Up N' Play Yer Guitar discs are in the Jazz's YSI thread.

Why in the hell does it go to this page everytime I press "last page"?!?

White_heat 06-25-2005 01:14 PM

Not too long, its preety fast compraed to P2P

Canadian-Guy 06-25-2005 01:20 PM

It takes me about five minutes at most

np: Bob Dylan - It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)

This song has incredible lyrics.

ATM 06-25-2005 01:22 PM

I love that song.

NP: A hilarious cover of Back in Black

It takes me 2-4 hours........ :upset:

"It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding)" has the greatest lyrics ever. Ever.
NP: A hilarious cover of Back in Black
The Hives' version? It's terrible.

JonG 06-25-2005 01:39 PM

Worst cover ever= Tori Amos = Raining Blood.

It's possibly the worst thing I've ever heard.

Best would go to Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man

ATM 06-25-2005 01:39 PM
The Hives' version? It's terrible.
No, by the Beach Balls. I should upload it, it's entertaining.

ATM 06-25-2005 01:40 PM

Speaking of Zappa, have any of you seen the DVD Baby Snakes? I got it for my dad for Fathers Day, and my friend and I are about to blaze and watch it.

JonG 06-25-2005 01:41 PM

Back in Black is already annoying enough being played by AC/DC. Hearing anybody else play it would be pain to the ears.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 06-25-2005 01:41 PM

No way. Dylan's version is much better IMO.

"All Along the Watch Tower" by Hendrix claims that title IMO.

TheDMV 06-25-2005 01:42 PM

Best Cover - All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix this song might be the most emotional I've ever heard him.

ATM 06-25-2005 01:43 PM

Did anyone download the Funkadelic song I posted?

Illmatic 06-25-2005 01:44 PM

I'm a big fan of Cream's cover of "Crossroads", myself.

Bah, at any given time I know dozens of covers I really like, but I can't name them at the moment.

TheDMV 06-25-2005 01:46 PM
Did anyone download the Funkadelic song I posted?
Yes. I like it, but I didn't pay much attention to it.
