Sup all. Actually, I am seriously considering ditching my last lecture, and cruising home. Sounds like a plan?

The vast majority of every American's day to day activities hurt other human beings. The food we waste, the sweat-shop produced clothing we buy, the list goes on. Unless, of course, you boycott such things?

I'm not stupid enough to try to change the world. Forgive me for trying to think on a smaller scale.

Nothing important was ever done by people who never bothered to think large scale. Innovation and change is erected by those who step out of the boundries of society. Nike would care if all Americans banded together, but if they all take your stance and delude themselves into thinking they can't make a difference so there is no reason to bother, then Nike does not care about the few who do step over their bounds, and who actually believe in their cause, rather than throw up a transparent front.

Yup, something I didn't see till I posted it.

Vince, you are taking this out of proportion since he is/was talking on it on a whole different scale then you are thinking of...

Getting people to boycott Nike is not an easy task, and not every one sees it the way as you are describing. And also in Ray's post, the key word is "some", he never said the whole country...

Illmatic 03-20-2005 10:32 PM
The problem isn't that I've "deluded myself", it's that I genuinely don't care about the issue enough to take action. Which leads to...
something about being selfish
It probably is, but I'm not going to lose sleep over it.

If trying to improve the lives of my family, my friends, fellow American blacks, and myself over trying to save the world is "selfish", then call me the most selfish man in the world for all I care.

Otherside 03-20-2005 10:32 PM
Which is of course selfish, though no one is ever willing to admit it.
In that set of mind, it is impossible to not be selfish.

Human nature demands that not only do put ourselves ahead of others, but that we put people that we are familair with above those we do not know. To break away from this preset in every action we take is not only impossible but foolish to attempt.

I'm going to tell a joke ITT now.

A lady goes to the doctor's office and tells the doctor that she can't get her husband to have sex with her anymore. So, the doctor gives her some pills and says to give her husband one each night in his dinner whenever she wants to have sex.

That night she gave him one and they had a decent night of sex. The next night she decided to try 4 pills and she had even better sex. Well, the next night she tried 8 pills and the sex was wonderful. So the next night she decided to dump the whole bottle in his dinner.

The next day her son showed up at the doctor's office and and said,"Doctor, Doctor, what did you do to my Daddy? My mom's dead, my sister's pregnant, my butt hurts, and my dad's going around saying, 'Here kitty, kitty, kitty!'"

Yes, it is selfish.

But you must take into consideration, people do this to keep their own little world stable. Maintaining your own little world around you with the people you personally know is alot easier then trying to start a revolution that needs to involve millions upon million of people.

That is, how I see it at least. I would love to help these people on a large scale, but is it possible with my situation I am at the moment? No. So why should I be essentially caring for those people when I should be worrying about my life at hand and keeping it as good as possible?

I'm just stating my views on the issue, which is not to say I care about people enough to try and fix their plight. If I did, I would devote myself to that cause. I don't care enough about that to do anything about it though.

Jason: It's not easy because people don't care. I don't either, but the fact is few people will admit to not caring about any human being. The fact of the matter is you either care about humans or you don't, there isn't a middle ground where you only care about a few.

Ray: As long as you're comfortable discriminating, I don't care. Oh, except I do because if you only care about certain groups you sacrifice the well being of other groups, which is what the entirety of humanity does anyways, and so no one ever accomplishes anything because they're too busy stepping on each others' toes.

Otherside: Of course we put ourselves before others, so why do people even bother putting up a facade of caring, the only thing we all care about is ourselves.

Jason (again): If one man can't do anything to change something, nothing can ever be changed.
