So no one has heard the bonus material on the London Calling 25th Anniversary Edition?

Someone?

Anyone? :smash:

CombatRock 10-08-2005 12:45 AM

Oh i have, i own it.

JohnXDoesn't 10-08-2005 12:56 AM
Oh i have, i own it.
Well that's nice to know, Combat Rock. It brings great joy to me. BUT HOW THE HELL IS IT!. I asked days ago, man. :upset:

Is it worth me spending some of my song credits on? And are these the "White Tapes" I've read about? Tell me what you know, dammit! :p

/ patience has run out

JohnXDoesn't 10-08-2005 05:05 PM

^Forget it. I just downloaded it. Thanks for the input, eveyone.

CombatRock 10-08-2005 06:22 PM

hahah sorry man. Do you like it?

JohnXDoesn't 10-09-2005 04:46 AM

^ Ah, that's ok. Maybe if I hadn't been calling the Vanilla Tapes the White Tapes I would of gotten some feedback. But yeah, I like it. The band sounds young and eager and in some cases a bit unsure of themselves. London Calling sounds real tentative and the lyrics are interesting. It's a nice glimpse of the Clash as a work and band in progress. I haven't heard it all as I just added it to my playlist and am going to bed soon. But I'll get around to it tommorow. I'm actually listening to London Calling, which I went ahead and dowloaded along with the bonus stuff. I have it already, of course. But I read that this edition was remastered and cleaned up a bit. Maybe a bit of remixing? Whatever the case, it sounds great.
I hate crass.

I wish i had some money, there is so much Clash/Joe stuff i want.
Why do you hate Crass?

I like them way better than Clash.

CombatRock 10-09-2005 04:55 PM

They sound like a marching drumline, and there singer is annoying.

guns_of_brixton 10-09-2005 06:38 PM

Lonesome Me is a cool song and I remember there being a Bob Dylan cover somewhere on there.

And I don't hate Crass, I just don't like them very much.

Lonesome Me is the countryish song right.

RIP Ian Curtis 10-10-2005 12:32 AM

I can't stand Crass, there's a fine line between "raw punk" and "unprofessional crap"

Culture Shock 10-10-2005 12:26 PM

That's what he gets for calling Crass unprofessional crap!

i_am_zombie_jesus 10-10-2005 06:56 PM

The Clash are amazing...But I havent heard anything by the other bands.
The Clash are amazing...But I havent heard anything by the other bands.

He just walked out, I think. Perhaps before he was asked to leave. Apparently he was an insufferable prick at the time and just wasn't talking with any of them. Not really a part of things anymore. He says he regrets the way he was, and I believe him. He seems changed. But at the time, by all accounts, he was literally impossible to be in the same room with, much less in the same band with. And he had been that way for years. So I think the whole thing just sort of fell apart and he walked. Right out of rehearsal one day and never looked back. And no one went looking for him, either.

white_riot 10-10-2005 07:13 PM

I thought Joe told him to leave the band because he was acting to much like a rock star and such.

guns_of_brixton 10-10-2005 07:44 PM
I thought Joe told him to leave the band because he was acting to much like a rock star and such.
Thats exactly it. Joe later regretted the decision.

CombatRock 10-10-2005 08:55 PM

Wonder what would have happend if Mick never left?

In my journlaism class, there is a like this colage (sp) of newspaper clipping and one of them says "carrer opprotunities".

JohnXDoesn't 10-10-2005 08:55 PM

^^ I just watched the last part of Westway To The World. Apparently Joe and Paul had enough and wanted Mick gone. So when Mick showed up to rehearse Joe told him so. Mick then looked at Paul and asked if he agreed, and Paul said yeah. And that was it. Joe and Paul say their was no communication with Mick at this time and they wouldn't even speak when in the same room. And he was always late or simply didn't show up for reheasals. Plus he didn't want to tour. And when he did show up Joe say's he was like "Elizabeth Taylor in a filthy mood." He says Mick was intolerable and impossible to work with or be around. Mick says he had no "control" and would always push things further and further until people were sick. This is one of my favorite parts of Westway To The World when Mick gets choked up about that time and what he used to be like. He seems almost embarrassed. He seems very pleasant and I'm sure he is. I can't really imagine him as the venomous snake he apparently was.

CombatRock 10-11-2005 09:32 PM

Yea thats a good part in Westway.

What do you think would have happend to The Clash if they didnt kick mick out?

JohnXDoesn't 10-11-2005 11:03 PM
Yea thats a good part in Westway.

That's a good question. I was always under the impression the songs Joe sung were his and the ones Mick sang were his own, also. Although credits went to Strummer/Jones, I thought they did it like Lennon/McCartney did it for the sake of getting even royalties? But on this board I have read Mick did the music and lyrics for his songs as well as the music for Joe's. Perhaps the door swung both ways a little? I really don't know.

Whatever the case, I think with Mick the Clash could of continued and kept growing artistically/creatively. They were a great band and their work was not finished. But if Cut The Crap is a true indication of how much Mick actually did contribute creatively, then him leaving killed the Clash. That album is fairly poor by any standard. But even had it been good the band was still different. On Westway they talk about how the beginning of the end was actually Topper leaving. How it cut into the chemistry and dynamic of the band. And then with Mick gone as well, well, where's the Clash in that. It would of been just a matter of time, anyway.

I've heard live bootlegs of the Clash '85. One from the Long Beach Arena that is literally great. Three guitar players, Joe is on fire, and all sounds good. But I suppose with only 2 out of 5 guys being original members it was more like a Clash cover band of sorts. If Mick had stayed I think they would of lasted right into the ninties. But as it is I suppose their time just came and went.

JohnXDoesn't 10-12-2005 01:11 AM

I'm listening to Give 'Em Enough Rope at the moment. Truly great album.

^^ A Clash cover. The people on there are pretty random. Anyone here or own this? I liked the Rancid cover

JohnXDoesn't 10-12-2005 04:51 PM

I just sampled a few cuts. Not great from what I've heard, but not bad, either. I'm interested to hear more when I get home. The Clash can be a good band to cover I suppose if you don't try to copy them. The artists I sampled certainly didn't try to do that. Sort of weird listening to it. Thanks for the link. Moby doing Straight To Hell? That should be interesting, to say the least.

Mick wrote all most all of the songs (instrument wise).

Mick is a talented guy if all that music is his. I really didn't know. Did Joe write the lyrics Mick sang? Or perhaps some of them? Listening to all the live Clash stuff I've been listening to lately has made me appreciate Mick more. No wonder Cut The Crap was so bland and generic. That is considerable and diverse talent. So would you say Mick wrote the whole of Sandinista? Musically speaking.

guns_of_brixton 10-13-2005 08:46 PM

Mick did write alot of the music, but Joe certianly had music writing talent (w/ doing movie soundtracks and such). It seems that Mick wrote all of the songs he sand but Lost in the Supermarket.

I cant believe the merits of hanging one's self vs the merits of frootloops are being discussed...in the Clash forum. For shame.
