And Mason made up for his drumming with the butterfly shirt in Live At Pompeii
:thumb: I second that. The best thing that Mason brought to Floyd's music was his sound, the tones he got out of his drums and cymbals were exceptional; better than pretty much any other drummer out there. If I could get my snare sounding half as good as his I would be over the moon.

I got Delicate Sound of Thunder yesterday, I think that that CD has finally completed my Floyd collection ... not had a chance to lsiten to it yet though.

No truer statement has ever been made.
I don't really see the point of obsessing over the technicalities of instrumentation. If somebody can make their instrument sound good, I'd say they're "good" at that instrument, which can be just as easily defined by what they don't play. That's why I love Ringo Starr. The Beatles would suck with Neil Pert.
I completely agree. Nick may not be the most technical drummer out there, but I love his drumming. It fits perfectly, and I dont think any other drummer would work with the music.

Oh, and I got Darkside of the Moon and The Final Cut today on vinyl. This is good news, for me at least. I almost picked up Ummagumma too while I was there, but eh, another time.

Where did you go? Millennium Music? And wait, do you own a record player?

MattSharpIsCool 12-26-2006 07:58 PM

Haha, ya I forgot to tell you. I got one for christmas so I've been buying albums like a crazy man.

I went to a shop on Hawthorne called Crossroads Music. That place fucking rocks, so much good stuff.

Apollyon 12-26-2006 08:01 PM

Ohhh I've heard of Crossroads. I just never have had the chance to get out there.

What are their prices like?

MattSharpIsCool 12-26-2006 08:09 PM

Pretty cheap. I got six albums today for 25 bucks, and they all seem to be in working condition.

rippa32 12-26-2006 08:57 PM

Wow great prices there.

I just picked up The Wall movie on DVD but I havn't seen it yet. Im real excited because it might help clear up some of my lyrics queries and theres heaps of extras.

MattSharpIsCool 12-26-2006 09:05 PM

That's an awesome movie. I got that DVD a little while back....it really does help clear some things up. It's still a bit confusing though.

www.thewallanalysis.com

^ That site has some cool ideas on the movie, but it's a lot to read at once.

Yield 12-26-2006 09:06 PM

That movie is awesome. The flowers and Goodbye Blue Sky scenes have awesome animation.

Jim 12-26-2006 09:08 PM

No Hey You though :(

They explain why in the commentary though.

Surf 12-26-2006 09:08 PM

I found alot of the live acton parts slightly underwhelming and more hit and miss. Some parts were good (pink in the swimming pool) and some weren't (most of the facist stuff). All the animation is great though.

Edit: Hey You is included in the extras.

MattSharpIsCool 12-26-2006 09:14 PM

I love how they included "When The Tigers Broke Free" in the movie. That is such an incredible song.

Leper 12-26-2006 10:45 PM

I've got no problem with Nick Mason's drumming. It's not complex or anything, but he gets the job done. I actually really like his drumming on Animals. I think it really gives the album a solid foundation, which might be why it's one of my favourites.

rippa32 12-27-2006 12:04 AM

Okay just finished watching the movie. I really enjoyed it, it cleared up a fair few things too. Like from the plane sound I always thought that was a plane crashing and couldnt work out whether Pink's dad was in the airforce or the army and now I know he was army and got a bomb dropped on him.

MattSharpIsCool 12-27-2006 12:36 AM

It gets better the more you watch it, you pick more stuff out every time.

rippa32 12-27-2006 12:53 AM

Cool, but does anyone know how to get to the secret buttons? I found I can do it through media player and my DVD drive on the computer but I can't work out how to do it on a DVD player.

MattSharpIsCool 12-27-2006 12:55 AM

What are the secret buttons? This is new to me.

rippa32 12-27-2006 01:02 AM

When you click em you just get a sound effect. Do you have the deluxe DVD edition?

MattSharpIsCool 12-27-2006 01:20 AM

I'm not sure. Is it all white bricks on the front and back, with the screaming face in the bottom left on the front?

rippa32 12-27-2006 01:36 AM

That might be the Digipak version which im pretty sure is the same DVD disc as what I got anyway.

TheDMV 12-27-2006 10:07 PM

What do you guys think of the Division Bell? I asked for it for Christmas and got but im not sure what to think. Sometimes i just need some guidance on how to listen

magicbus 12-27-2006 10:37 PM

It's not my favorite, but I like it. Very chilled out, relaxing music. I find it really similar to On An Island.

randomthought9 12-27-2006 11:32 PM

Yeah, the Division Bell's pretty good, but not their best. I like it.

Jim 12-27-2006 11:55 PM

It's far from a pop album, so if you need something to listen out for, try feeling the overall atmosphere the album creates, similar to WYWH.

The opening track Cluster One can sound dull to the passive ear, but if you're patient, it's quite stunning :) there's a certain piont where Rick slowly starts making his way up the piano and all of a sudden there's a dramatic chord change. Then the main riff comes in and we're on our way. Soon comes Nick's drums and the rest is purely satisfying.

I think I need a cigarette :smoke:

The solos are superb too.

rippa32 12-28-2006 06:43 AM

A friend of mine brought along a copy of one of David Gilmours solo albums on vinyl. I didnt get much of a listen but I really liked it. I don't know which one it was just that it wasnt On An Island.

TheDMV 12-28-2006 10:56 AM

The main reason i wanted it ws because i had heard some parts of songs and the solos sounded really cool. I figured that there would be a lot of focus on the guitar. I just cant help but find myself dissapointed in the lyrics and even some singing.

Probably his self-titled, that's quite a good album. I made this deduction because About Face sucks pretty hard. I'm not the biggest fan of On An Island either actually, it's a bit too mellow for it's own good and it's rather boring on the whole.

Uh, yeah... cigarette...

Come on people, this is a Pink Floyd thread.

Whale and Wasp 12-28-2006 03:58 PM

i found "on an island" kind of cheesy :(

EDIT:

yup i felt the same way

Riva 12-28-2006 05:14 PM

On An Island is good background or sleeping music, very relaxing and interesting enough for you to appreciate it. The Division Bell is a bit more "happening", but it still has the same vibe about it.
