i had only a year of actual training and i can kinda shred, i hate it though it's essentially pointless and pure wank

I've been playing about two years and I think I'm pretty bad honestly.

tl;dr on how to play metal guitar

1. warm up everytime by playing chromatic scales using alternate picking - there are vids on youtube

2. get guitar pro 5 (not legally free), or tux guitar (legally free)

3. download tabs on 911tabs of whatever you can find, just don't expect them to have tab of any underground dm/bm w/e you listen to. Search for songs you like where there are riffs you would want to learn

4. If the riff is hard, play it really slow.

5. learn how to tremolo pick, if you can do this you can play bm

all I pretty much is tremolo pick, its fun

i kinda want to go back to lessons, learn some theory, get some more foundational training but im at a point where for the most part i can play what i hear in my head at least with the kind of music I'm trying to play right now, and that's not bad.

oh and I play a couple minor chords

been watching some youtube vids to learn.

trying to change between chords cant do it :@

then i stopped with that and tried to learn some easy songs and can now play intro to like 3 songs

also i can do some tapping, i was pretty excited when i pulled it off, it wasn't very difficult at all.

ok. is tremolo picking very difficult to learn?

my goal is to be able to play some pth in a year or two.

if brent does this and is bad why would you take his advice.

honestly if you want to play PTH get some solid training

well it's probably gonna be difficult to learn to sweep by yourself, at least it seems like it would be, i had guidance so idk.

I learned how to sweep by myself. All you need to do is practice using youtube vids

palm muting is another essential - which you sort of have to do when you sweep so it sounds clearer
