Krabsworth 10-13-2005 08:22 PM

Jazz band try-outs tomorrow.

/chatters teeth.

Walrus Gumboot 10-13-2005 08:24 PM

I think I have sparked a movement to play Frank Zappa in Jazz Band.

The drummer from the Jazz Band is in my music theory class, and I did a report on Montana, and I guess we realized that three of us liked FZ, and today one of them brought in St. Alfonso's Pancake Breakfast (the teacher was like  )

The bassist and other trombonist that are in my English class also showed intrest in the idea, when the subject was brought up because one of them had a shirt on that said "Montana"

The best part is that the teacher was telling us about how we were only listening to the "tip of the iceberg" of CR, like Led Zeppelin and such, and she doesn't even know Zappa

EDIT: what do you play, Krabsman?

that's pretty late isn't it?

We had a music night tonight.

Guitar. I know my chords, but I'm just overall nervous.

What was your report about? Like what area's of Montana? Or what about Montana I should ask.

Leper 10-13-2005 10:17 PM

Ok so hopefully a Jethro Tull expert is online right now because I want to know if "Crest of a Knave" was the Tull album that beat out Metallica's "..And Justice for All" for hard rock/metal album of the year at the '89 grammy awards..

No, I believe it was Rock Island. Crest of a Knave came out in '87.

EDIT: Nevermind, it was Crest of a Knave.

EDIT2: Does anyone else really dislike the Dylan/Baez duets on Live '64? It just doesn't sound right to me, she has a nice voice and all, but it just doesn't mix well.

Leper 10-13-2005 10:26 PM

Ok good. Because I got Crest of a Knave the other day, and listened to most of it today, and can't figure out how it classifies as metal lol.

jpj 10-13-2005 10:30 PM

The actual award was Hard Rock/Metal, and Tull has put out hard rock albums as well as the prog/folk rock stuff. I haven't heard Crest of a Knave, so I don't know which it falls under.

Illmatic 10-13-2005 10:33 PM

jpj's avatar reminds me of the cover to Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters for some reason.

 It kinda resembles it, in a way.

Head Hunters is a great album.

Illmatic 10-13-2005 10:36 PM

Oh, it mos def is.

I've been on kind of a jazz kick lately, so yeah.

np: Common - They Say (well, this ain't jazz, but whatever)

Leper 10-13-2005 10:40 PM

Well it's a great album. I'd say it's harder than most of their stuff, but it really doesn't qualify as hard rock/metal. It's folkish, and kind of progressive, and unfortunately a couple of the songs have a bit of an 80's pop influence in them. But overall it's a fantastic album.

Leper 10-13-2005 11:20 PM

I think I finally have a favourite Rolling Stones song. Wild Horses just sounded incredible to me today for some reason.

PinkFreud 10-13-2005 11:21 PM
That's good. The yellow skin, and small eyes made me think he looked like Mao.

Compare them

That's a good one...Tumbling Dice, Happy, and Get Off Of My Cloud are my faves right now, though

np: Bob Marley & the Wailers - Roots, Rock, Reggae

Leper 10-13-2005 11:32 PM

Ya Tumbling Dice sounded really good to me today too. I really find myself enjoying the, gospel-like, backing vocals in that song.

NP: Jurrasic Park Theme (hehe to be brutally honest)

Illmatic 10-13-2005 11:36 PM

I love how easygoing Tumbling Dice is, from the rolling guitar to the gospel background vox, it's a very laid-back song.

NP: Bob Marley & the Wailers - Could You Be Loved

Leper 10-13-2005 11:50 PM

Sweet, I finally got that second Ten Years After album downloaded.

PinkFreud 10-13-2005 11:55 PM

hmm. i think my favorite stones song is beast of burden.

Seafroggys 10-13-2005 11:56 PM

I want to check out Crest for a Knave, then get and Justice and play them back to back.

CSD & the Soul Machines 10-13-2005 11:58 PM
I think I finally have a favourite Rolling Stones song. Wild Horses just sounded incredible to me today for some reason.
I love that song.
hmm. i think my favorite stones song is beast of burden.
Great song. Rich and compelling. :D

I think I'm going to jazz up my Lennon-Hitler. It's pretty crappy at the moment.

PinkFreud 10-14-2005 12:05 AM

haha. i have terrible paint skills. example: my avatar.

ive been listening to the flaming lips a lot lately. anyone else listen to them?

Illmatic 10-14-2005 12:06 AM

They're a little too weird and cutesy for my liking, but they have their moments.

Leper 10-14-2005 12:23 AM

Heh, Charlie Chaplin, now THAT'S scary!

Leper 10-14-2005 12:34 AM

No, i've never really listened to the Flaming Lips. What other band are they like?

PinkFreud 10-14-2005 12:51 AM

i'm really not sure how to describe them or who to relate them to.

yoshimi battles the pink robots pt. 1 is an addictive song though. i think im going to play it for my dorm's next open mic night.

Leper 10-14-2005 01:01 AM

Sounds like a lot of fun. I can't wait to go to University next year.

The_Passenger 10-14-2005 01:01 AM

I've never understood what is so great about the Flaming Lips. But then that may just be me.

WelcomeToTheMachine 10-14-2005 05:03 AM

ugh, Monday i have try-outs with my band or this show at this coffee place, the drmmer signed us up without asking us yesterday, we havent been able to play for like 2 months because my guitars been ****ed up and our bassist has been staying at his dads house in florida,im still rusty becuase i havent played with anyone for so long and i dont like finding out things at the last minute,we dont know what to play and were probbaly gonna sck because we only have one day for all of us to practice together(saturday)

It would look like a beatnik if you gave him a berret
What was your report about? Like what area's of Montana? Or what about Montana I should ask.
It's a song by Frank Zappa, we had to pick a song to make the class listen to, and then we had to write a little thing about it, which actually just involves copy/pasting bio's off of the internet

Phatstrat 10-14-2005 09:06 AM

I love classic rock to, many great guitarists came out from it all.
No, i've never really listened to the Flaming Lips. What other band are they like?
They're pretty hard to classify. Some people just call them alternative, some experimental rock, or neo-psychedelia. Really they are all of those things, and Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots is a masterpiece, though it took me a while to get into it.

I'd say they're alternative with hints of psychedelia. I love them.

Glitterati 10-14-2005 10:48 AM

Favorite Stones song? Gotta be Gimme Shelter.
I've been on kind of a jazz kick lately, so yeah.
Me too. I downloaded Miles Davis's Kind of Blue a while back, and I got a John Coltrane album out of the library (as well as a Tom Waits album. Tom = the man) yesterday.

Jazz is good.

np: The Clash - Spanish Bombs

You ever listened to Bitches Brew? That's my favourite Miles album, anyway.

And what Tom Waits album was it? I've only have Swordfishtrombones, but I've been meaning to check out more.
