I can't believe I still haven't gotten around to buying Goat Horn's stuff.

GenuineImitation 12-04-2006 06:28 PM
I love King Crimson, but neither of these bands are anything like what I'm looking for. :p Basically I want some epic hard rock tunes (6 minutes+ in length) with lots of guitar riffage and mystical lyrics. Some keyboard/orchestral accompaniment would be great too.
You may like Symphony X then. They are more Prog/Poewr Metal, than Hard Rock, but they sure are epic and progressive. Definetly worth checking out.

You may also like Dream Theater and Vanden Plas.
Candlemass, first and foremost.

Reverend Bizarre. Goat Horn. Solitude Aeturnus
k thanks...solitue aeturnus seems kind of boring but i am totally loving candlemass \m/

Tyler 12-04-2006 07:53 PM

Listen to Solitude's cover of Heaven and Hell at least. Do yourself a favour, seriously. It's outstanding.

KAMELOT.

More power than prog, but they have some ridiculously awesome arrangements.

Mojo2004 03-22-2007 07:03 AM

Kamelot do kick mucho buttocks. If you want to get hold of some of the best songs, try "When the Lights are Down," "The Haunting" and "Centre of the Universe"

You won't be disappointed :thumb:

Im looking for some real chilled out, relaxing stuff with acoustic guitars, strings etc. 'River man' by Nick drake is a good example.

thanks for any recommendations.

TojesDolan 03-22-2007 07:17 AM

I don't know why I don't find Kamelot appealing. I like Kalmah for cheesiness sakes.

AA-12 03-22-2007 08:14 AM

Kamelot isn't even really cheesy. I don't care for them either way though.

I find David Gilmour - On An Island pretty relaxing, try that.

AA-12 03-22-2007 08:31 AM

That album is seriously underrated.

-Listy- 03-22-2007 08:33 AM

Im sure my dad told me he picked up his album a while ago, haha thanks for reminding me.

Apocalyptic Raids 03-22-2007 08:35 AM

It's pretty good.

-Listy- 03-22-2007 08:36 AM

I wouldn't expect anything less from mr Gilmour.

yeah this is pretty sweet thanks matey.

Apocalyptic Raids 03-22-2007 08:45 AM

you're welcome.

ATM 03-22-2007 09:02 AM

Beck - Sea Change

..for relaxing acoustic and strings

Try Air - Moon Safari

Maybe also stuff like The Pogues - Rainy night in Soho or Dirty old Town.

And possibly some Alabama 3 stuff. Try - Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlife. Or even Last Train to Mashville Vol. 2. Accousticy album with mostly laid back songs. There is the odd exception though.

Not really guitar based, but Daft Punk - Something About us and Sneaker Pimps - 6 Underground are pretty chilled songs.

TojesDolan 03-22-2007 09:33 AM

maudlin of the Well's Interludes (the four of them).

-Listy- 03-22-2007 09:48 AM
Oh if you want an album for this, Suicaine Gratification is a must. Also Butch Walker - Letters.
I got a few songs off an album called Mono i think..i'll get back to you on them :) But i'll check out that album.

thanks for all the suggestions people.

what the hell was that

Wow..Air did that 'sexy boy' song?

Didn't know that.

I just realized i've heard quite a few of Air's songs, but I didn't know it was them at the time heh.

I can't find any Maudlin of the well, i've heard of them before though.

I should really get something better than Limewire.

just listened to "Wastefall - Soulrain 21" and the band is fantastic. can you recommend me more progressive metal in this direction?!
What i like so far:
Dream Theater - Images and Words (the only hard album by them - great riffs)
and this Wastefall album, on some songs the riffs are so nice heavy :)

what i want to have is hard (!) progressive metal; i would prefer normal singing instead of growls (like in opeth - i know them and i love them); and nice time signatures and rhythms... - something like meshuggah ^^

i once tried Pain of Salvation and never like them....

well, i know i am a Dream Theater whore, but i would recommend Scenes From a Memory if you haven't already checked it out. 'harder' that Images and Words, and follows on from Metropolis part 1.

Symphony X are another great prog metal band. check out 'Divine Wings of Tragedy' or 'The Odyssey'.

i could hook you up with one or two sample track if you like :)

repcak 05-02-2007 11:22 AM

i have both DT albums and i have all Symphony X albums.

jpshortstuff 05-02-2007 11:47 AM

oh. well then. um...
:o
/looks stupid

maybe look at Pagan's Mind, Conception, maybe some Riverside.

you've foiled me.

Bartender 05-02-2007 11:48 AM

Seer's Tear - Precious is a fantastic album in that kind of vein (I think, it's not my area).

Tyler 05-02-2007 02:47 PM

Subterranean Masquerade are one of the few interesting Progressive Metal bands I've heard in a while, but based on what you listen to I dont think you'd like them. There are some growls too, I guess.

I gather that you're looking for the progressive metal "sound", rather than bands with actual progressive tendencies. Let me see what I can dig up:

Dead Soul Tribe - The January Tree
Adagio (Fre)
Andromeda (Sweden, the band that did "Chimera")
Power of Omens - Rooms Of Anguish
Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter

Don't hold me to these though, this isn't a sound I really enjoy.

Anthrax is the heaviest band known to man
Power of Omens - Rooms Of Anguish
Circus Maximus - The 1st Chapter
What bands exactly do these two sound like?

repcak 05-06-2007 07:56 AM

thank you guys! i will check them out...

ATM 05-06-2007 08:09 AM

Also get Vemod by Anekdoten

Riva 05-06-2007 05:41 PM
What bands exactly do these two sound like?
Circus Maximus is fairly standard prog/power fare, if I remember correctly. Bit like Pagan's Mind.

niobium 05-06-2007 06:02 PM

Hi can I get some bands like The Notwist or Minotaur Shock? Nice indie electronic stuff.

A separate request: A really good industrial metal album that isn't Godflesh or Fear Factory (or Rammstein or Suicide Commando)

Riva 05-06-2007 06:03 PM

For a great Black Metal turned Industrial Metal band/album, you can't go past: Samael - Reign Of Light.

Shattered_Future 05-06-2007 06:04 PM

Ram-Zet is kinda cool, I think. I don't listen to much industrial.

Pig - Sinsation
