Doom 10-11-2007 12:09 PM

the Trouble drummer, Jeff Olson, has a new band called, Retro Grave. The line up kicks ***... saw this on Blabbermouth recently... it's a remake for Trouble's "Run To The Light" I guess he has some new **** coming out too.

Jeff "Oly" Olson (TROUBLE, RETRO GRAVE) has tapped Vincent Wojno (TROUBLE, MACHINE HEAD, KREATOR, TESTAMENT) to produce and engineer the first two RETRO GRAVE albums. The debut CD, now simply titled "Run", is a re-arrangement of TROUBLE's "Run to the Light" (originally issued in 1987 via Metal Blade). Special guests on the "Run" album include former TROUBLE bassist Ron Holzner; members of RISE TO ADDICTION, TROUBLE and NOVEMBERS DOOM; Kyle Thomas (ALABAMA THUDERPUSSY, EXHORDER, FLOODGATE); Leif Edling (CANDLEMASS); Sammy Duet (GOATWHORE, ACID BATH); and up-and-coming guitarist Mike "Rebeard" Schermuly.

"Run" is currently being recorded for an early 2008 release. A record deal is being nogotiated, the details of which will be announced in the very near future.

Kyle Thomas briefly fronted TROUBLE in 1999 and is "a welcome addition to the 'Run' album," says Olson. "All of my guests are very talented musicians that I'm psyched to work with, especially my new friends from the UK, RISE TO ADDICTION [who toured with TROUBLE in Europe earlier this year]. These guys are hard-working and extremely talented group of guys, as [is] my new permanent guitarist, Mike 'Redbeard' Schermuly from Portland, Maine."

Are there any albums similar to Stormcrowfleet with that similar bassy production?

Shattered_Future 10-13-2007 09:37 AM

ATM, why the HELL do you get all the ****ing good local shows!?!?!

pate 10-13-2007 09:52 AM

Maryland = doomland

Shattered_Future 10-13-2007 09:54 AM

Maybe I should go to college in Maryland.

Thergothon s/t is what you're looking for probably.
Also Worship's Last Tape Before Doomsday is somewhat similair.
ALthough no FD band ever managed to get as bassy and muddy as Skepticism on that release.

Thergothon - Stream From The Heavens

It's even better imo, though it doesn't have that epic quality.

Stormrider 10-13-2007 10:43 AM

Eh, Thergothon seems to be what I'm looking for :p thanks.

Thanks a lot. I'll check it out and post my thoughts after.
ALthough no FD band ever managed to get as bassy and muddy as Skepticism on that release
Ah, I see. I'm really liking the album. It's all I've been listening to since yesterday.

pate 10-13-2007 11:45 AM

I can highly second the recommendations of Thergothon and Worship.

I thought you didn't like that?

Stormrider 10-13-2007 01:02 PM
I thought you didn't like that?
It only annoys me in the second song, and I skip that song anyway. I know that's what I told you but I've grown to like the production on the album now. /shrug

I listened to the Ahab album earlier. It started out well, but after about 5 songs, I lost interest a bit. I'll definitely go back to it though.

pate 10-13-2007 01:23 PM

Ahab is great. Them, Thergothon, and Worship are my favorite FD related bands.

Tyr 10-13-2007 01:29 PM

The problem with funeral doom is that I tend to lose interest after a couple of songs. Up until then it's all good.

pate 10-13-2007 01:56 PM

Yeah, that's how I am. I have to be in a certain mood to even want to listen to fd, and then I'm usually out of it after 35 minutes.

Iron Bars 10-13-2007 02:42 PM

35 minutes = 1.5 songs most of the time then.

I like some FD bands. Ahab is great, Mornful Congregation is good and Sceptisism.

I've been listening to alot of Saint Vitus lately.

Yeah I know. :(

Vitus is great.

It's because I live just outside DC.

gmoneyguy 10-13-2007 05:50 PM

I prefer Wino Vitus to Reagers Vitus tbh.

pate 10-13-2007 06:08 PM

I do too, by far.

rippa32 10-13-2007 06:58 PM

I still havn't heard Reagers Vitus, I was lucky enough to come across my copy of Mournful Cries.

pate 10-13-2007 07:10 PM

Reagers era is really good, but Wino is spectacular.

gmoneyguy 10-13-2007 07:12 PM

My friend loves Reagers. If you like vocals that are 2nd tenor in doom, then you'll like them.

rippa32 10-14-2007 12:34 AM

Where do you guys get your CD's? It's very hard to find a good selection of Doom Metal at any shops near me, even JB Hi-Fi which has great variety and theres this independant metal shop but they stock mainly the more mainstream metal bands. I have ordered from http://www.stonerrock.com before but living in Australia means I can't always afford to pay all that extra postage.

TojesDolan 10-17-2007 06:16 PM

Minotauri is pretty good.

Eh, Rockinghorse Records, JB HiFi or Aussie Web Distro's generally do the trick for me, though admittedly I'm not a huge Doom fan past the more obvious, bigger bands within the genre.

rippa32 10-18-2007 05:06 AM

Rockinghorse hey? I'll go there next time im in Brisbane, I've only been in there once briefly.

gmoneyguy 10-18-2007 08:21 AM

Is the new November's Doom any good?

pate 10-18-2007 08:26 AM

It's excellent, but it's different than their normal stuff. It's a lot faster. TPHD is still their best.

gmoneyguy 10-18-2007 08:32 AM

Awesome, I should be getting it in the mail today or tomorrow.

My apologies, I was under the impression you were also from Brisbane from previous posts (dare I say it was talking about a Wolfmother show? ). I must have you confused with somebody else.

And yes, Rockinghorse is the go when it comes to record stores in SE QLD.

I think their new one is the best, to be perfectly honest. One of the heaviest releases I've heard.

ATM, that's not really something you can miss right there. :-/
