9:23PM in Sydney, you?

funkyhoney 06-16-2009 07:47 AM

It's 11.47PM here, just over two hours later. What're the odds?

FunkMetalBass 06-16-2009 10:44 AM

Anybody got any suggestions for a preamp that will get me a nice gritty tone and doesn't cost more than $500?

I'm considering switching to a two preamp, one power amp setup so that I can have a clean channel and dirty channel instead of buying a second head for my dirty stuff.

What do you think of the Tech 21 SansAmp RBI?

gaslight 06-16-2009 10:57 AM

You'd have to check out the Aguilar AGRO and/or Tone Hammer.

FunkMetalBass 06-16-2009 11:09 AM

That AGRO sounds pretty nice, and it looks to be small and light....w00t! Do they make rack ears for it?

I'm looking for rack gear as I currently don't have a pedal power supply.

gaslight 06-16-2009 11:12 AM

Yeah comes with a footswitch and rack ears.

FunkMetalBass 06-16-2009 11:21 AM

I want to try one out in store. I wonder where I can find one. I'm tired of ordering without testing stuff through my gear first.

What's the footswitch do? I'm sure I could research it, but I'm invoicing at work and don't have that time right now.

gaslight 06-16-2009 11:25 AM

Just an on/off thing.

FunkMetalBass 06-16-2009 11:39 AM

Gah.

Sex.

Maybe I'll just stick with my distortion pedal for now.

fatbandit 06-16-2009 02:28 PM

The AGRO would work well as a dirt channel I think. It only cleans up when you turn it off though, and when its off, the unit is basically bypassed. It takes the tone of your bass and puts it straight into the power amp. It doesn't sound so good fully saturated, but if you're sparing with the distortion, the Agro can do a nice low gain sound if you want to leave it on all the time.

I wouldn't use the Tonehammer for it. I don't rate the AGS on it that much to be honest. The clean sound though is great - using that for my clean channel.

See if you can find the Billy Sheehan signature Ampeg preamp. That's designed for running two cabs I think.

Just got my splitter in the post, and ordered my second cab. Clean/dirty rig ahoy :)

Also, I cba to search the thread, can you give me that email address again mr McNuff? Going to send you the text for an ad if that's cool :)

FunkMetalBass 06-16-2009 02:36 PM

Sure thing.

I was going to offer you the opportunity to just use my login and password on TB so that you can respond to PMs yourself (I'm not on TB much anymore and my computer at home is still out of commission) as well.

EDIT: bassplayer420 at cheatcc dot com

fatbandit 06-16-2009 03:11 PM

consider yourself mailed.

you use msn or owt?

FunkMetalBass 06-16-2009 03:13 PM

wtf is owt?

and that's a "no" to both of them because I suck. We've basically got MX and email, dear sir.

fatbandit 06-16-2009 03:16 PM

Haha, I won't be so Yorkshire in future. Owt would mean 'anything'. Yeah, I can see why you wouldn't have got that to be honest XD

I may have spruced up your ad a teensy bit for layout and selling purposes.

gaslight 06-16-2009 03:34 PM

Owt as opposed to nowt which would be nothing.

...I think.

fatbandit 06-16-2009 03:34 PM

S'cool, ta for sticking it up :)

Just hope it shifts!

Electric Requiem 06-16-2009 04:26 PM

I just bought a bass and I'm looking to get an amp.
I'd like to spend under $500 if I can.
Any recommendations?

Also, what does everyone think of the Line 6 Pods?

FunkMetalBass 06-16-2009 04:46 PM

I'm not a fan of the Line 6 modeling. Granted, I've never used one for bass, but I have the POD v2.0 and the Flextone amp for guitar and I'm not a fan of either of them because the tones it has are too digital for me.

What are you looking to do with the amp? Do you intend on playing out with a band? Is this just for home? What kind of music to you play/will you be playing? An amp is just as important to your tone as the bass.

Electric Requiem 06-16-2009 06:04 PM

I intend to be playing funk, prog and jazz fusion.
I suppose for now it would just be for practicing at home or jamming with friends, I doubt I'll be playing publicly for some time.

gaslight 06-16-2009 06:13 PM

Personally I think things like Pods and V-Amps are great as a catalogue of effects, let's you try out lots of different sounds, and see what you might like to look into getting a better unit for.

As for digital modelling of amps and such, I just don't believe in it.

I dunno what your local currency is but under $500 at a guess I'd say you'll be looking for a combo if it's first hand. My first proper amp was an Ibanez SW100 that did the job really well. They've updated the series since though and I haven't had my hands on the new models.

burtonbassist_102 06-16-2009 06:17 PM

i just got the new 311 album.

it's actually an incredibly well-rounded album. i'd never really listened to them much before this but i'm starting to.

Except for Guitar Rig ofc. :p

:amaze: 06-16-2009 08:52 PM

Woohoo, started putting the clear coat on the bass I'm repainting. Looking pretty sexy if I do say so myself.

What's up, yall?

funkyhoney 06-16-2009 09:36 PM

Just got my bass back from my brother yesterday. New Gotoh bridge, polished frets and reoiled neck, vintage 300k volume pots and a brand new tone pot, wired in series and parallel.
