Im thinking of making the jump to Black Metal, any good starting bands?

xizoesira 11-06-2004 12:47 AM

If you want to take it slow, ease in with Dimmu Borgir, Cradle of Filth, and newer Immortal.

Or, jump right to the classics. Emperor/In the Nightside Eclipse, Mayhem/Live in Leipzig, Darkthrone/A Blaze in the Northern Sky... etc.

Ir0n_mE 11-06-2004 12:49 AM

Don't listen CoF it will put you off Black Metal. Dimmu Borgir are good though.

Kingofdudes 11-06-2004 12:50 AM

I have heard Dimmu and Cradle before, so I'll probably check out Emperor or Darkthrone

Bartender 11-06-2004 12:50 AM

I'd say avoid Cradle and Dimmu altogether, as they don't give too much of an idea of how good black metal can be.

Immortal - At the Heart of Winter and Burzum - Aske/Burzum are, I would say, excellent albums which are good at leading people unfamiliar with the genre into it.

You might be best off just downloading some stuff by various artists though, and figuring out where to go from that.

Bartender 11-06-2004 01:02 AM

Okay, I just finished watching Mallrats. I need another film to watch.

Potential choices (those DVDs within reaching distance) are;

Natural Born Killers
Scarlet Diva
Four Rooms
Made in Britain
Saving Private Ryan
Road to Perdition
Gridlock'd
Toxic Avenger part IV: Citizen Toxie
The Shadow
The Usual Suspects
Witchfinder General
The Big Lebowski
The Abominable Dr Phibes
Clerks the Animated Series
Bowling for Columbine
Sgt. Bilko
Goodfellas
Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
Scarface
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist
Falling Down
A Fish Called Wanda
Groundhog Day
Repossessed

Any suggestions?

Kingofdudes 11-06-2004 01:03 AM

Jay and Silent Bob or Scarface are good candidates.

Bartender 11-06-2004 01:26 AM

That they are, though I did just watch Scarface a couple of nights ago. I feel like watching the Shadow, actually.

Riva 11-06-2004 01:42 AM

That is one awesome dagger in that movie. Go with it, or A Fish Called Wanda.

Bartender 11-06-2004 01:47 AM

I watched A Fish Called Wanda more recently than Scarface, heh. The Shadow it is.

I want that dagger.

Riva 11-06-2004 01:51 AM

Do you like Monty Python, Bartender? I watched Life Of Brian again a while ago. I love that entire movie. Especially Pontius Pilot, and his lisp.

Bartender 11-06-2004 02:00 AM

Yup, I'm a fan of Monty Python. I have Quest For the Holy Grail on DVD somewhere, but I can't find it :(

One of my flatmates is a fan of a lot of the things I'm a fan of, so we spend quite a lot of time quoting various movies at each other. Monty Python comes up a lot.

Kingofdudes 11-06-2004 02:00 AM

/me has been taken by sleep

Bartender 11-06-2004 02:10 AM

But it's only 3am for you! I'm on 8, and still going strong.

Riva 11-06-2004 02:11 AM

I'm on 6.05 pm.

"He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy. Now piss off."

Bartender 11-06-2004 02:16 AM

Reg : There is not one of us who would not gladly suffer death to rid this country of the Romans once and for all.
Guy: *raises hand* Uh, well, one.
Reg : Oh, yeah, yeah, there's one. But otherwise, we're solid.

Riva 11-06-2004 02:22 AM

Brian: Friends, let us not fight against each other! Let us join arms against the common enemy!

Mob: *looks around wildly* The People's Front of Judea!?!

Brian: No.... The Romans...

Bartender 11-06-2004 02:26 AM

Brian: Look, I'm not the messiah!
Woman: Only the true messiah denies his divinity!
Brian: Well what chance does that give me!? Alright, I AM the messiah!
Crowd: He is! He is the messiah!
Brian: Now, fuck off!
(silence)
Man: How shall we fuck off, O Lord?

Riva 11-06-2004 02:35 AM

*Brian drops the sandal running away*

First guy: Look! He has left a sandal for us! Obviously this means that we must collect all the sandals that we can!

Second guy: No! We must take one sandal of, and hold to it to the sky, so that we might praise him more!

First guy: Give me your sandals!

*Mob runs off*

And the stoning scene is classic.

Bartender 11-06-2004 02:39 AM

Yeah. Actually a lot of the best parts of The Life of Brian seems to work less well in text than the Holy Grail. Overall it's a lot less quotable.

Bartender 11-06-2004 02:52 AM

I'm actually off now. I'm either going to sleep, or more likely, going to play some San Andreas.

Riva 11-06-2004 02:53 AM

Yeah, it loses a lot without the pronouciation. Anyways, I'm going out now, so I'll catch up with you all tomorrow.

SonorKen 11-06-2004 12:41 PM

Man, guitar players are hard to find!

BludgeonySteve 11-06-2004 12:43 PM

I keep saying that drummers are hard to find :(
