Duane would be the closest, Clapton's close too, but Jeff Beck?
Beck is technically the best out of all of them. And his finger picking style, when talking about Rock guitarists can only be compared to Mark Knopfler. He is amazing, and few have his skill.
Yes, Beck could overpower many legends on just technical skills. But he does lack the most important aspect, soul and emotion and his playing. (This excludes truth and a few yardbirds songs.)
I think Dickey could be a lot of other legends on songwriting, tone, and the way he plays more than just skill.
His solos on albums after that (exp. his instumental album of which i have forgotton) sound to me like a very skilled player in guitar center goddammit im contradicting myself.
See, that's the thing, he has tons of emotion and soul. Just not as much as (perhaps Gilmour) which he had a lot more of during his Classic Rock era. Uses a lot of blues elements too.

Dickey's the king of Pentatonic scales. |
I really don't hear it in most of his albums.
i think gilmour stands for all that should be in solos because he was more about setting the mood and emotions with his solos instead of just randomly playing notes as fast as he could (malmsteem)
You have to agree though, page , clapton, and Duane had a far higher ratio of quality material. except of coarse...lay down sally

I'll second that, gilmour could just express the emotion of an entire song, maybe better than anyone. |
Whos to say what is emotional and what is not? If I do a lot of bends, play slow, and make a funny face when I play, does that mean I am playing with emotion?
How about a Top 5? Most emotional solos of all time (preferably < 1980)

Well, it's not like Duane had a lot of time for recording. 1969 - 1971 |

No, playing with emotion requires you to play directly from your imagination, or your heart. At least for it to be authentic |

1969 - 1971
Yeah but give me one bad allman solo. |

And how do you know David Gilmour did that? For all we know, he could have been bored as hell. And I think Duane did more in those few years than a lot of other legends who are still alive have done. |
Actually he was bored most of the time with the floyd.

Some would describe emotionally simply as a song/solo that evokes emotion. |
Is anyone still here?
Yes, but I refuse to take part in this silly argument
It's a forum, not a chatroom.
Yes, but I refuse to take part in this silly argument
Why is that? |
Well screw it, lets get back to topic jeez...Yeah, I love classic rock Clapton, Beatles, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Hendrix, Eagles, Kansas, and all of that when I say that to the normal 'guy' mostly wiggers down here in Florida and they ask me how am I suppose to dance the music and is not neccessarily to dance, I mean come on music is supposed to make you feel special in a way is not just for dancing, classic rock is the foundation of all rock and music, The Beatles and Elvis formed rock who ever thinks any other way well, classic rock will always be history.
Twas not thee topic.
Well, I came to this conclusion. Black Rythm + White Melodies = Rock.
Classic rock is not the foundation of all rock and music.
Why is that?
"No dude, this guy has so much more emotion in his solos" "No dude, you're way off, this guy has twenty millon times the emotion" Who cares how much emotion is in a solo? The only emotion I care about in music is in the singing and lyrics. |

That is a very true statement i've thought long, and hard about it |
