I like Hammett more to be honest, even though they way they weave the duel guitar parts I think would make them equals.

God that is a fun song to play. But my favorite is still the wind cries mary. that or burning of the midnight lamp...but I cant get it to sound right.

I like hetfield's personality more then I like Kirks....but that's just me

ThrashMaster27 01-17-2006 11:53 PM

Yeah, how many times did Kirk speak during Some Kind of Monster?

Like, twice?

PepsiMetal 01-17-2006 11:55 PM
I've seen that video of JP playing MoP and it looks like he is alt. picking to me...even my guitar forum buddy who are JP whores said he was alt. picking
I think petrucci down picked MoP. Not sure.

Although DT played mop slower than metallica live. I had Rock in Rio 04 and their DT mop, and metallica was definetely faster. Now I dont know if metallica play faster than their album, or if DT played slower than their album. I dunno.

W.M.A 01-18-2006 05:08 AM

has ne1 else noticed that the opening riff in call of ktulu is very, very similar to the one from Pink Floyds Hey You and Is there Anybody Out There, from the Wall.

ThrashMaster27 01-18-2006 05:42 AM

Also sounds familiar to Sepultura's Beneath The Remains intro.

For the first few bars at least.

Jim 01-18-2006 05:44 AM

no. but i think "is anybody out there" has a very similiar riff to "fade to black". you know, the very first bit of it before the solo. in fact, it sounds zactly the same.

mfb 01-18-2006 07:36 AM

Yes he did. I noticed it was slightly slower also. I also noticed that John was either struggling with the consistant downpicking. Either that or he was pulling some weird faces.

And how is Disposable Heroes possible to downpick?

There are some quick triplet/triplet-feel notes in their that would be inpossible to all downpick.

Fade to black opening riff sounds somewhat like Goodbye blue skies. It's not the same though, and FTB is better by a mile.

Listening to Fade to black by sonata arctica, anyone noticed how their distorted parts are alot softer than metallicas. It doesn't sound much distorted cause it's not as heavy.

Father_Jack 01-18-2006 01:28 PM

Fade to Black verse also sounds alot like children of the damned.

Maybe because they're clean?
has ne1 else noticed that the opening riff in call of ktulu is very, very similar to the one from Pink Floyds Hey You and Is there Anybody Out There, from the Wall.
Be more specific. I'm listening to Is There Anybody Out There now and I don't hear what you're talking about.

Ah yes, I hear what you mean. I don't see a connection however. Going up and down by only a half step is too common to really say that they are copies. And yes, the beginning of it has a handful of the same notes but the whole riff? Na.

BLS_Infernus 01-18-2006 02:24 PM

see what I mean...John Petriucci (if he was downing picking which I think he wasn't) can hardly do it because alt. picking is that much easier. down pickers > alt. pickers. If Hetfield went to alt. picking or if Kirk did that I'm telling they would be a whole lot better and faster.

I really don't see the connection of Metallica to those Pink Floyd riffs either...a few notes are similar but the over all thing isn't close

Joe 01-18-2006 02:30 PM

I disagree with this whole down picking > alt. picking. Sure it means you have more talent, but does it sound good? I'll down pick something if that's how it was meant to be played, but if something sounds better alt. picked I'll play it that way. Yes, if Hetfield did more alt. picking he would be a lot faster I think if he wanted to be.

NP: Battery

BLS_Infernus 01-18-2006 02:34 PM

yes there is a 'how it sounds' factor but all these alt. picker shred guitarist get to much credit for their speed. I could easily see Hetfield playing as fast or faster.

does anyone have a good tab for MoP? Most of the tab sites are/have been closed down due to copyright

Stormrider 01-18-2006 02:39 PM

Try Metaltabs.com

I got some other good powertabs from there after powertab.net closed down.

Its a popular site though, you probably already know of it.

Sph 01-18-2006 02:39 PM

911tabs are the place I go.

I was just listening to Hey You and I can't see any similarity to Call Of The Ktulu.

Joe 01-18-2006 02:46 PM

I've done ultimate-guitar.com but I like the book so much better. It's worth getting the book, to be honest. I really don't know why it happened but I tried learning Puppets for nearly 3 monthes and then it took me about 2 days to learn the entire song once I got the book. Weird stuff.

Books sometimes have bad tabs and are way to expensive..I own MoP one and KEA one though...

Ive gotten a lot of use from them though..

Well that's why you get the centimeter thick one and not the three inch thick one. I've had good luck with the Metallica and Eric Clapton books. The Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets ones are really good.

But i dont buy the 3 inch ones...Maybe their just overpriced here.

The MoP intro is wrong. I watch it on Cunning Stunts and thats not where they play it.

Sorry, if i sounded offensive in my other post, didnt mean too..

Don't worry you didn't. It's not that the tab is wrong, it sounds the same, but it's not how they play it. I've watched many One videos and the tabs are never like that.

Would you guys mind listening? No one has listened in the competition thread and I need some feedback. Don't worry about the chorus, I know it needs work. Thanks guys :thumb:

Very nice.:thumb: What setup are you using?

BLS_Infernus 01-18-2006 03:19 PM

umm I remember getting something from kurrptsenate yesterday going with Metallica books...I'll have to look at that after I get home from work today. MoP could be on it

i reckon that The Unforgiven's intro is very like the intro the COTD, with the acoustic intro and solo. meh, who cares, they're both great tracks.

any more news on the new 'Tallica album? i'm revising, so i can't really search around for info.
