I really like older Glassjaw. Everything You Ever... etc. Damn good album.

fatbandit 07-29-2009 05:23 PM

Yeah, Daryl stopped being an angry little bitch after EYEWTKAS and the music suffered. Awesome album though. One of my favourites. His vocal performance is outstanding, and the the bass tone is perfect for heavy music IMO.

Really like the track that's been streaming off Glassjaw.com for a few months though

Convectuoso 07-29-2009 06:43 PM

Wish they would hurry up and release that album that's been in the works for years now.

And yeah EWEWTKAS is definitely in my Top Ten.

FunkMetalBass 07-30-2009 09:29 AM
Dear Hunter and Portugal are both bands I've listened to but never really fallen madly in love with. For Glassjaw, you really need to check out something like Lovebites and Razorlines (and check the tone in that bass break ^_^) or Hotel of the While Locust. That first album is some seminal post-hardcore right there.

Also just found out what gear their bass player was using for that recording session, so I'm going to go have a fiddle with my pedals and amp and see how close I can get :p
Out of curiosity, what's he use?

Also, I broke down and bought a onespot last night. I now have all 5 pedals connected, but it's going to take a lot of fiddling around to get something I like. I notice also that the power supply doesn't fit into the Wasabi very well. Did you have that problem too?

Morley Vol -> Aphex Bass Xciter -> Boss Bass Overdrive -> Digitech Grunge -> Wasabi Echo/Delay -> Boss Chorus -> Amp.

FunkMetalBass 07-30-2009 03:48 PM

God, this place is so dead.

burtonbassist_102 07-31-2009 01:22 PM

saw the ugly truth the other day.

besides the obvious chick-flick moments, i actually enjoyed it.

but every time it showed a closeup of gerard butler i kept waiting for "THIS. IS. SPARTA!" and for him to kick someone.

It'd be epic if he did that to Catherine Heigl when she's up close to him and teasing/seducing him.

rofl. yeah, that would've been PERFECT.

but sadly, was not meant to be. :(
Out of curiosity, what's he use?
He's used a few different setups. I found a blog on his Myspace about it. I'll dig up the link.

http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=227430&blogId=240411801

Looks like he was doing the clean DI signal and distorted amp signal - pretty much what I did on our last recordings. So I was along the right lines (Y)

Yeah, I did find that it wasn't quite long enough, and kept coming out. I got Dave at OBBM (bassic-bits.co.uk) to make me up a connector with a different adapter tip which goes further into the pedal, and it worked fine.

Personally, I'd run that chain as ODB-3 -> Grunge -> CEB-3 -> volume pedal -> Xciter -> Wasabi. But that's my take on it. Ask 5 people for their signal chain, and you'll get 5 different answers.

funkyhoney 07-31-2009 10:13 PM

I'm playing a show tonight, woo. On the way I'm stopping at cashies to look at a second hand trace elliot 4x10.

gaslight 07-31-2009 10:35 PM

Nice. Not planning on using it on its lonesome are you?

funkyhoney 07-31-2009 11:02 PM

Well no I can't just use a cab, I need amplification!

And probably, yeah a 410 is enough for me.

gaslight 07-31-2009 11:16 PM

I wouldn't trust a 410 to provide the full range of sound you'll want if you're not gonna have anything else with it. Unless it's an Acme or a Schroeder or something like that. If it's a company that builds their 410s to be paired with a 15/18 in another box, you could have problems. If you want a one cab set up with the best of both worlds I'd recommend a 212.

funkyhoney 07-31-2009 11:18 PM

Yeah, I'm not a huge 12 fan, but I was going to try and find a 212 I liked. And I'd probably just get 2 410s or something rather than a 15. I don't like 15s.

Either way, better than what I use now haha.

gaslight 07-31-2009 11:25 PM

You should try them out man, I was never an advocate of them until I'd tried them, now I love them.

Back in my misguided youth I would sit around drawing an Ampeg full stack that I was dreaming of getting, 4x10, 1x18, some stupid Ampeg head. Would have cost easily over $10,000 and would have only been Ampeg at the end of the day, not to mention heavy and hard to transport. Then I ended up with an Aguilar head and this Epifani cab and I can literally carry my whole rig with me, comfortably one trip between the car and the venue every time (bass bag back-pack style, head slung over one shoulder, both hands free for the cab, though it's a cab you can comfortable carry one handed too). It's so sweet.

gaslight 08-01-2009 09:01 AM

Post you freaking dandies.

fatbandit 08-01-2009 09:07 AM

I need a van so I can have a devastatingly massive rig.

gaslight 08-01-2009 09:10 AM

Haha yeah I was trying to sort out what car I'd get with the main feature of it being it would transport my rig then I just tthought, what the hell am I doing, I've urinated away more than enough money on music already before bringing motor vehicles into it.

General rule = motorvehicles, if present, exacerbate any situation to which they are not essential.

IE:

"This door is stuck!"
"Hold on, I'll get my ute..."

vs

"Hey, let's drive a long way."
"Hold on, I'll get my ute!"

Bored.

fatbandit 08-01-2009 09:12 AM

I have two bandmates who drive. Needless to say, my stuff goes in their cars ;)

So really, I want one of them to buy a van so I can have a devastatingly massive rig.

gaslight 08-01-2009 09:15 AM

Haha man, you've just gotta think in your head "I'm his girlfriend, and I want a van".

"Wouldn't it be cool if you got a van dude, think of how great it would be. You could spend more time in it with the people you like the most, and have room for all their nice things. I really think we need to buy a van."
"We need to buy a van?"
"Yes you need to buy a van."
"I need to buy a van."
"I love you."
"...what?"

By a quirk of spatial dynamics, the cars I have access too tend to fit my exact rig and nothing else. I've managed to fit an extra guitar amp / guitar / guitarist once but that was it.

It's so hard to say "no sorry, my car only has room for exactly my gear and nothing more" without coming across like you're trying to be a jerk. Especially when part of you really wants to come across like you're being a jerk.

fatbandit 08-01-2009 09:29 AM

Haha - I think our guitarist already wants the van, but he's poor. To be honest, I'd be happy to put towards it and just have everyone pitch in for a band van.

I am really good with loading cars though. We had two cars which were full of gear, and then I bought a second cab. Nobody believed it would fit until I rearranged it all ;p I have a job getting all my pedals into my pedalboard when I rearrange it though :(

gaslight 08-01-2009 09:34 AM

Haha yeah I enjoy the whole Tetris process too.

Can be rough pitching in for a band van when it comes to what happens to it should the band ever disperse. I think the fair thing to do would be just draw up an agreement whereby if the band breaks up, someone can just buy out the other guys' share of the van or whatever.

fatbandit 08-01-2009 09:36 AM

That's exactly what I liken it to ;p When we've got the van, I'm thinking we also need a driver ^_^

Did you ever download our EP dude?

gaslight 08-01-2009 09:46 AM

Do you ever have the dream where you stack all the gear perfectly, and it disappears into the floor?

'Cause honestly I don't but I'd really proud of my subconscious if I did.

Are you Mae's Lost Empire?

fatbandit 08-01-2009 09:52 AM

There's a reason to stack gear badly if ever I heard one :/

Yeah, that's us D:

gaslight 08-01-2009 10:02 AM

Tetris is such a quintessentially Russian game. There is no way to win, but you can prolong your inevitable demise through incredible difficulty.

So where does that band name come from?

fatbandit 08-01-2009 10:10 AM

mknxzciuhvbja izxcufbhn az\figbz\sdighoiux cb

gaslight 08-01-2009 10:25 AM

That's as good a story as any :p.

You could have ended up being called Emily, haha.

fatbandit 08-01-2009 10:28 AM

I think I might float that name change as a proposal at our next practice.

trumpeter 08-01-2009 01:19 PM

O hai gice

gaslight 08-02-2009 01:07 AM

Is it just me or if you go to the Bass Player magazine website (bassplayer.com) and click Subscribe to try and subscribe, that page doesn't work?

funkyhoney 08-02-2009 01:32 AM

I don't know nor am I going to try. Gig went OFF last night man.

gaslight 08-02-2009 01:37 AM

I wanna hear all about it right after you check that site thing for me .

Please :chug:.

funkyhoney 08-02-2009 01:41 AM

Fine... I guess.

While I don't like being coerced, in this case I shall make an exception.

funkyhoney 08-02-2009 01:42 AM

The subscription form boots up fine for me. However I'm not putting in my details and potentially subscribing just to try it out.

gaslight 08-02-2009 01:48 AM

Oh I didn't want you to try to subscribe or anything.

I don't get a form :(. Now tell me of your sweet gig champ.

funkyhoney 08-02-2009 01:51 AM

Haha, get a new browser.

Man it went off, wasn't expecting that good of a turn out, nearly to capacity I'd say. So we'll definitely make some moolah as well. But hell, even if we didn't it was just a great venue, 8x5m stage, great sound guy and good lighting. Just went off without a hitch, everyone getting into it, calling for more songs, was just a great night for all involved.

gaslight 08-02-2009 02:03 AM

I have Opera I shouldn't need a new one .

Nice man, how many people do you estimate? Do you guys have physical copies of your music to sell?

funkyhoney 08-02-2009 02:15 AM

We were supposed to have them ready but they got delayed a week, we should have them this week now. Well I know over 100 because there were that many people before we even started playing (we were headlining). And capacity was 300 I think, I'd say around 200 which was good considering the notice and the fact we haven't played a show in a long time.

gaslight 08-02-2009 02:17 AM

That's heaps awesome dude. Feel free to hit me up if you ever need short runs of something done and packaged, jewel cases or snazzy digipack style things, stuff like that. I do stuff for local bands around here but some interstate action would be pretty awesome. I'll send you a copy of my old band's EP when it's done so you can check out the work.
