A properly set up wireless network is pretty much indistinguishable in practice. the only time cabling is noticeably better is when you're counting data between two computers on a local network.
If you think a wireless internet connection is slower than cabling it in, you're dreaming.
Old connection via cabled modem = 5.4 MB/s Max was 6.2 MB one day.

Now im running a secure connection at 54MB/s :)

Win A Rabbit 02-13-2008 02:52 PM

what's the difference between MB/s and Mbps ? Or are they the same thing?

BummerJonny 02-13-2008 02:53 PM
For transferring files from one computer to another, it can make a hell of a lot of difference. At LAN parties, I would give out my copy of Half-Life + Bunch of Mods to everybody else, and being a gig, it would take sometime even on ethernet. I can't imagine doing it on wireless.
solution, have a hard drive like mine without any windows data on it, that i just unplug and can chuck into any pc and have all my games, apps and music in 2 mins. then copy it across. 5 mins tops :P

I call bullshit

BT phone lines cant handle that sort of speed. They can barely handle 20mb/s.

The city centre lines here can handle 24mb/s

Berk 02-13-2008 02:57 PM

holy crap toastie waffles are seriously the best food ever
what's the difference between MB/s and Mbps ? Or are they the same thing?
MB/s = Megabytes per second

Mbps = Megabits per second

8Mb = 1MB roughly

Win A Rabbit 02-13-2008 02:59 PM

1 waffle is alright but after that they're disgusting

edit: thnx bobbyjohnny
what's the difference between MB/s and Mbps ? Or are they the same thing?
I always use MB/s when i mean Mbps.

Internet speed is Mbps (Megabits per second)

One megabit is 0.125megabytes

That would take the same amount of time, to be honest, if not more.

Besides, its called I sent out to one computer, then we both send out to two computers.
what's the difference between MB/s and Mbps ? Or are they the same thing?
No there is a big difference. It is a common ISP selling point from lack of consumer understanding in regards to megabytes vs. megabits.

Drum Phil 02-13-2008 03:04 PM

Plus ISP speeds are never as fast as they claim.

I get somewhere between 6 and 7 mbps and that varies a lot.

Janeway 02-13-2008 03:09 PM

Does anyone know where to download PSX emulator roms/bin-cues whatever without having to use torrents?

Edit: Nevermind.

Win A Rabbit 02-13-2008 03:13 PM

my mom took the dog to get it's hair cut. we tried to do it here with an electric trimmer about a week ago, got done some of her back/the top of her head, and she was freaking out too much for anyone to finish.

yesterday was my brother's birthday and my mom bought him and electric shaver. he turned it on just to see, and the dog freaked out just from the sound and wouldn't come close to any of us for the rest of the night.

Janeway 02-13-2008 03:31 PM

Why the hell would anybody upload FF7 on rapidshare? There are six files for each disk, and you can only download one of the files every hour and a half. Rapidshare blows.

hahahaha you call **** mate.

I'm not even with BT. why do you assume this?

Talk talk ftw. Im not even paying for this broadband :)

i think ill screenshot tbh just to help you see.

Drum Phil 02-13-2008 03:32 PM

Because all broadband packages require a BT enabled line :)

And talk talk claim their broadband is only 8mbps :)

BummerJonny 02-13-2008 03:35 PM

could have ntl phil...

*sigh*

Speed from router -> computer is not the same as rest of world -> computer

Also, anyone that doesn't have The Flashbulb's new album is seriously missing out. Not only is it awesome, but there's some sick drum programming on it (could be e-kit), sounds a bit vinnie-ish in places.

the_pure_drummer 02-13-2008 03:40 PM

Download 2656Kbps
Upload 340Kbps

Whatever this means :)

BummerJonny 02-13-2008 03:40 PM

well spotted raz0r

Drum Phil 02-13-2008 03:40 PM

Yeah i just clicked onto that.

54mbps is the data transfer between the router and wireless receiver, not the receiver and the ISP.

Jonny, that doesnt change the fact that talk talk only go up to 8mbps.

Drum Phil 02-13-2008 03:41 PM
Download 2656Kbps

That means your broadband is actually at about 6.7mbps.

This is my work connection, btw.

In the world of film production, we sometimes digitize "dailies" or "rushes" (for me UK friends) and upload around the world, we do more uploading than downloading.
