yeah this is definitely going to piss dargon off to no end.
keep going.
:p:p:p:p |
I like Slaughter of the Soul but not in a very serious way, if you follow. It has may good riffs littered throughout so it keeps my interest even if it isn't the most varied or unique idea out there.

pretty much the same for me. |
Slaughter of the Soul is ace. It's a point blank shot to the head. No frills, no frippery. At The Gates were consistently ace for over 10 years. From Gardens of Grief onwards. Blaming them for metalcore bollocks is like blaming Sabbath for Devildriver. Or Master for Six Feet Under.
Dargon: Hotmail is blocked at work so me replying depends on me having free time outside of work which is not something I have a lot of. |
I kinda like Formulas Fatal To The Flesh.
.
Me too. Not quite sure what happened to Tucker's voice afterwards. He went from having one of the most brutal voices in DM to sounding like a weaker David Vincent. Bizarre. Anyway Formulas is what happens when a death metal band lets the drugs take over! Total mindfcuk! |
Although, I didnt that bands like In Flames, Soilwork, Dark Tranquility, and Arch Enemy(the main bands talked about when Gothenburg is brought up) were even really from there.
The big four of melodic death metal were In Flames, ATG, Dark Tranquility and Dissection. All were from Gothenburg. As were numerous others (Eucharist, Sacrilege, Crown of Thorns etc etc etc etc). There was a massive scene there in 95-98. Although everyone who liked the music was actually in one of the bands. Adrian Erlandsson told me that if ATG, IF, DT and Dissection played together in Gothenburg they'd get maybe 100 people - can you imagine how many more would have turned up in Germany! |
so anybody seen the entombed dvd?
I'm thinking about buying it. |
dissection weren't from gothenburg
|
You're 100% correct! They were from Stromstad. A small town of 5000 people close to a larger city whose name escapes me... oh yes that's it... Gothenburg.
|

The Somberlain had the Gothenburg sound 2-3 years before anyone else had even really hinted at it. It was mixed with some black metal, so it's usually not looked at the same way, but yeah, I think it was more important than slaughter of the soul or the jester race for melodic death. |
Pretty sure Jondur knows what was important because he was actually around when all this **** went down.
|
Pretty sure Jondur knows what was important because he was actually around when all this **** went down.
he never said one was more important than another, im just stating an observation. In Flames and ATG seemed to borrow the same "flow" that Dissection used in their harmonies. |
Slaughter of the Soul wasn't ATG's first album though. It was their most "refined" I suppose.
And what about Heartwork? I'm not distinguishing between "Gothenburg" and Melodeath because I don't care, but Heartwork came out in 1993 same as Somberlain |
hmm good point. I havent given heartwork a fair listen in a while, so idk, you could be right.
|
"Into Eternity" came out in 1993 as well, and it's got a lot of melodic junk on it. Eucharist's "A Velvet Creation" came out in 93 as well.
Basically there was far too much going on to bother bitching about who influenced what more. |
both of those albums rule
|

I like And the World Returned. It has nice guitar harmonies.

thanks for that eucharist album in the DU although i haven't checked it out yet |
yeah, good albums indeed.

Dark Tranquility and In Flames were also very well known by the time their debuts came out. I won't deny the influence of Dissection (although I think much of their stuff is supremely gay) though. I like trying to work out the chronology of scenes and their influences. Which is why I laugh when people say Ablaze in the Northern Sky wasn;t that important - if you were there you'd know. It changed EVERYTHING! Although melodic death metal is cack in the extreme nowadays, at the time it was a cool scene. There was a great mid-90s band from the UK called Necropsy who were great, Eucharist were godly, Crown of Thorns etc etc. Everyone these days have just forgotten the death metal part. I saw In Flames at Wacken in 2003 and they invited me to Jump Da Fukk up; I declined their invitation. Legions: Hope you're OK mate. Is your email the same one I've been using the last few years? |
Sad to hear you're leaving us Legions, take care.
|
haha yeah i saw an in flames video and the singer yelled JUMP DA FUKKK UPPPP and the crowd JDFU'd
|
What did Coke get banned for?

 I must really check this band Eucharist...I remember their albums were very hard for me to find online, and once I had gotten one, I was very disappointed. But I can never have enough real melodic death. |
their albums arent hard to find at all
|
Melodic death sucks. I like disharmony in my music, all the time.
I like old In Flames, though. I like Dan Swano but then again it's too technical in some points. i'll go buy a death-reeking muffin at the moment, yes. I hope. Yes. |
Melodic death sucks. I like disharmony in my music, all the time.
a little of both is always nice though, if you like disharmony, I suggest you check out Solefald's Neonism, (avant-garde, post-black) its quite cool, unlike anything |
what the hell is post black
|
Yeah, I've never heard of post black either. Sounds pretty dumb, though.
|
E minor arpeggios with a lot of feedback, probably.
