Because all that diverse music didn't come from a dozen bands. It came from one. And it came from an unlikely one and was done so well, it was undeniable. Yet the band always maintained there identity, integrity, and perhaps most of all, dignity. That is not something most bands could do. Even today.
Thats why i love them so much.
I gotta give it up for Sandinista. It's just so creative and expansive. Very atmospheric in places, too. I think this album along with London Calling really gave punk some staying power and far reaching influence. Could you imagine being a punk musician back then and hearing these albums new? All of a sudden the doors were kicked all the way down! Anything was possible. Sure you had ska bands, reggae, funk, rockabilly, dance, punk, etc. But here was one band who had the balls to do it all and take it to the limit and beyond. They could of come with a single album after London Calling and cashed in. But instead they came with this three disc beast. No one released three album sets of new original music back then. They still don't. And here comes this little punk band from England with the guts enough to do it. And the messege was punk is whatever you want it to be.

To me the Clash were unique and brillant because of Londen Calling and Sandinista. And to a lesser extent Combat Rock. If they had just kept it "punk" as it was defined back then, they would of gone down as just another pretty good band that had some success and came and went. Instead they influenced and inspired a whole new generation of musicians. Punk and otherwise. London Calling and Sandinista were bold statements that moved everything forward, IMO. Because all that diverse music didn't come from a dozen bands. It came from one. And it came from an unlikely one and was done so well, it was undeniable. Yet the band always maintained there identity, integrity, and perhaps most of all, dignity. That is not something most bands could do. Even today.

Overpowered By Funk? Hell yeah!
I don't think anyone could've summed up the Clash any better. imaginary rep++

Criss Frantic 09-23-2005 06:10 AM

A lot of people tell me I look like Strummer, which I quite enjoy, seeing as he was one of the most gorgeous men ever to have graced god's green earth, and is one of my musical heroes.

I think they were a terrorist group in Italy.

CombatRock 09-26-2005 08:32 PM

Yall are aware i made a shirt that says Hate and War on it. Well time i made a new one, i have a plain green shirt and a plain dark grey shirt, what should i spray on it. Clash related of course.

I will show my Hate and War shirt soon.

JohnXDoesn't 09-26-2005 09:29 PM

Train in Vain would look good on a shirt. Sounds good, too.

I wanted to say I picked up Chaos In New York at my music service (allofmp3.com) the other day and it is remarkable. It's a live recording of the legendary shows the Clash did in New York City during the tour supporting Sandinista. Anyone else ever hear this? Probably so. It's not really available here in the states, so it came as a surprise to me. I combined much of it with tracks from From Here To Eternity Live and it is great. If you don't have it, I highly recommend it. And it has lots of great cuts from Sandinista, too.

CombatRock 09-26-2005 09:49 PM

Yea i have allot of songs from the bonds shows, thanks to sean.

Brain Toad 09-26-2005 10:43 PM

I want the official band threads to look more interesting then they do now, so I need your assistance for clever titles. These titles should relate to the band in some way, whether they be songs, albums, lyrics, or quotes. So if you have any ideas, please post them here, and the best idea will be used.

JohnXDoesn't 09-26-2005 11:40 PM

I suppose you mean the titles we see when we look at the thread listing page. So for example:

The Clash on MX Thread. Featuring Joe Strummer. Which is a take on The Clash on Broadway.

Or perhaps Straight To Hell: The Clash/Joe Strummer Thread. I like that one myself.

Or maybe MX Calling: The Clash/Joe Strummer Thread.

These are just ideas. I'm not sure exactly what you are looking for.

John and Robert: The Dead Kennedys Thread.

Or perhaps John and Robert = Jello: The Dead Kennedys Thread. Cheesy, but kinda funny.

The Dead Kennedy ones don't really mention song titles or lyrics or anything, but perhaps are a clever play on words anyway. And the = Jello one could kind of relate not only to Jello Biafra, but also to the condition of both Kennedy's on there final day. A bit tasteless, but hell, it is the Dead Kennedys. The name of the band itself was meant to shock.

How many other official band threads are there? I looked through almost all the punk pages and I see threads about bands such as Bad Religion and Social D and what not, but nothing that looks too official.

Anyway, these are just off the top of my head. If I have any brain power to spare tommorow I'll try to think of some more. I do like the Straight To Hell one, though. :)

The official ones are listed in the rules, they are
The Clash
Dead Kennedys
Leftover Crack/Choking Victim
Streetlight Manifesto/Catch 22
Against Me!

The AFI one is an unofficial official since its the main thread on the band, the same with the Misfits thread that was floating around for awhile.

I was gonna get that book... but I didn't have enough money and don't like reading that much :(.

And you can't go wrong with either one of those songs.

CombatRock 09-27-2005 08:35 PM

Andy has Passion is a Fashion.

That sounds like a Barbie movie.

CombatRock 09-28-2005 04:16 PM

So whats the new name going to be for the thread?

AIRIC 09-28-2005 04:18 PM

AIRIC 09-28-2005 05:46 PM

Ouch.

guns_of_brixton 09-28-2005 05:46 PM

My name change suggestion had to do with one of the best Clash bootlegs I've heard.

JohnXDoesn't 09-28-2005 05:52 PM
So whats the new name going to be for the thread?
I dunno . There are some good ideas around, I suppose. Could be almost anything, really. Final decision is up to the Mod In Black. He might have his own ideas. I haven't come up with any others. It just seems like an endless prarade of names is possible. I figure I'd keep it simple. I really haven't thought about any of the other bands. Maybe I'll give it a go later.

EDIT: Oh, it's been changed! Very good. I like it. Wonder why. :)

CombatRock 09-28-2005 06:02 PM

Yea, i think it was the best one.

CombatRock 09-28-2005 09:58 PM

I just got done watching this speical in PBS called Get Up Stand Up, it was about music and politics. And when they did the "punk" part It had the Clash, and its showed the clash more than any other bands, its showed them playing live, and talked to joe. and on one of the clips of them live, Joe was playing a strat.

RIP Ian Curtis 09-28-2005 11:20 PM

I just got out all of my Clash best ofs and singles collections. Lost In A Supermarket always ruins my enjoyment. On one of my compilations its like white riot, janie jones, i fought the law, career oppurtunites, garageland and just when you're really enjoying the awesome along comes Lost In A Supermarket, followed by Train In Vain. And then I have to get up and push the skip button. And d'amn if I'm not too lazy to bother with that.

JohnXDoesn't 09-29-2005 01:01 AM

^ "I wasn't born so much as I fell out, nobody seemed to notice me....."

I like the lyrics to the song. Not crazy about the chorus or the song itself, but it's pop enough for Mick, I suppose.

It's funny that Combat Rock should mention politics and the Clash. The Clash were probably the most overtly political band ever. Thanks to Joe they could be very direct like in Washington Bullets or The Call Up, or more clever as in The Magnificant Seven or Atom Tan. That's another thing I liked about the Clash. They weren't really around very long, but they evolved so fast while they were. Musically, lyrically, and creatively. I don't think any other band could of pulled off those politics and all that music and found critical and mainstream success. All the while maintaining a level of credibility few bands could ever hope of achieving in the first place. I've been listening to a lot of them as of late and I think I'm enjoying them more then ever. I hear new and different things in the mix. The Chaos In New York album has really opened my ears, also. I think they have moved up a notch on my list of all time favorite bands.

RIP Ian Curtis 09-29-2005 11:08 AM

I will agree that The Clash are one of the best "political" bands around, the only other band who are their equal are the dead kennedys. Basically I judge a bands political music quality on whether or not I can get over disagreeing with them enough to really listen to them.

guns_of_brixton 09-29-2005 02:35 PM

I wouldn't call the Clash the most political band... maybe at their time. The Magnificent Seven gots some sweeet political lyrics, Radio Clash is cool too.

And I like Lost In the Supermarket. The guitar solo is pretty rad with the effects. If somebody could tab it they'd get sex from yours truly.
