Not really

Most of the music is in lydian mode (i.e., if you've taken music history, it is the mode of the devils). It is supposed to sound evil, and most lesser evil music is in dorian or locrian mode, the more common modes.

/knows :)
Lydian is more common than locrian. I think you're mixing the two up: Lydian has a b5 tritone in it but it's a major scale. Locrian is the mode based off the diminished chord, with the tritone and a minor third, so I would say that THAT would be the music of the devils.

:)

AH! I'm thinking of Locrian then, sorry.
anybody else notice that you seem to go back to your "roots" the older you get? I still listen to all the same metal, death metal, etc that i have, but the last couple years ive been on a blues kick and i think its because thats the kind of stuff i was raised on.

I dunno, just my though for the day
I went back to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers for a long time. "Running Down a Dream" was my favorite song when I was a kid, and it still kicks ***.

Not a prob. How you doing with that music theory stuff? This kid named Ytse made a theory questions thread in the Jam Session forum and I've been a frequent poster there ('cause I'm a theory nerd). You should check it out if you have questions.
Well I've only heard three songs by Opeth, so I can't really have an opinion. I was just talking by proxy.
Yeah I know, but by proxy I gathered that Children Of Bodom were death metal, you see what I meen? I've heard people calling Underoath black metal, a lot of kids just mislable genres, to a horrible extent. Moreso than me when I first joined even.

That's the thing, everyone has a different definition of "decent." What I consider informative and clear-cut will be different to someone like Dargon, who will inevitably obliterate everything I say because he's tr00 and I am not.

i am the robots 03-18-2005 01:08 PM

Eh, who cares AH, he's all about being tougher than everyone else through music taste, let him act like he's 5, I know I take shots at him all the time, but do you really wanna act like me?

Eh, who cares what anybody thinks about stuff like that? Whatever's good for you. :thumb: I think Dream Theater's pretty heavy, and I don't give a **** how wimpy they are compared to some metal band. They're still heavy. I mean, a lot of those bands get a killer groove going sometimes, but it gets really ragged sometimes. And the bass drums sound like mallets clicking together a lot.

/digressions...

I like Dream Theater a lot, but I also like Cryptopsy, of course Cryptopsy are heavier, I still think DT ware heavy, I meen, even Korn are heavy, just not when you compare them to extreme bands.

I'm starting to think there are different kinds of heavy.

Cain 03-18-2005 01:14 PM

But about Opeth...I mean, they scream a lot, and growl and have dissonant riffs and stuff, but I don't even consider them very heavy a lot of the time. They're strike me these days like a composer's metal band (which isn't a bad thing at all!). It's a very cerebral, insanely melodic and musically rich version of the death metal sound.

Yep. I really don't even think they have much of the Death Metal sound even, they're just very original.

Has anybody heard the band April Ethereal? They're complete and total rip offs of Opeth, but they are so **** good.

Example: there name is from an Opeth song, and their album is called Advent, another Opeth song (ironically my favorite).

They sound like a tribute group. If they don't cover Opeth they will probably fail at being taken with any sort of seriousness.

Yep, they are a tribute group, they don't cover them, but they play very similar music.

Yes, but what I gathered is what I've gathered from people here (who I know (to an extent), and trust to be able to make decent judgements on such things.

RippingCorpseAttack had a status saying "Death to Poseurs", so I came up with the idea of a nub-slaying crew. It was originally gonna be me, RCA, and metal-milita (NOT Metal_Militia), all Titans regs. Now, these guys want in:

Griffin_Page
Vio-lence
SLATANIC-666
the thing that should never be

Us 3 will review their asskicking potential later today on slsk, a reasonably tr00 program that allows instant communication.
I'd like to join this cult, I mean crew. Sick of posers, really.
