Well, this is pretty general, but I'm looking for a starting point in metal. I don't really know any bands, I like Pantera, and i've heard some Opeth songs that were okay, but other than that I'm pretty clueless. Thanks.
Iron Maiden Megadeth In Flames Stratovarius Iced Earth Black Sabbath Symphony X Death That would be a nice start up. |
Thanks guys. And Apocolyptic Raids, I know of Demons And Wizards, being the huge IE fan(note user title) and huge Blind Guardian fan.
I figured you might :p |
I'm looking to get into black metal, 'cept I'm not big on shoddy production. I've got the "Bergtatt" album by Ulver, as well as "Empiricism" by Borknagar, but where should I go next? I'm fair open minded, but I'd prefer if the production didn't TOTALLY blow (which I hear is rare for BM...). Thanks in advance.
Both of those albums have black metal influence, but they are by far not black metal. And if you don't want to hear bad production, stay away from black metal as that is a huge part of way black metal sounds. |

I've read Dissection, Satyricon and Dimmu Borgir are fairly good to get people into the genre. Any help is appreciated, I really don't care if it's tr00 or not, I just want some good shiz. |

Go listen to the album Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger, and if you can stand that production, you should be able to listen to most black metal. |
quoting my own request just incase anybody missed it...
Listen to megadeth's rust in peace, metallica master of puppets, in flames clayman,Ozzy osbournes live randy rhoads tribute, or any of those. |

Also check out: Amon Amarth Arch Enemy Kalmah Children Of Bodom Kataklysm Thats if you dont mind screaming.:) EDIT: i only just noticed you put Opeth their so you wont care about screaming. |
Thanks. Ive heard about Hammerfall, but never actualy heard their music...are they any good ?
Little late, but I'll get my thoughts in here. I find nothing special at all about Hammerfall and probably hold the crown for me of 'Most Mediocre Power Metal Band.' Just my two cents. |
And you are a fucking moron.
If you go around asking for black metal with stupid slang, you don't deserve to listen to the commerical "black metal".
Please tell me why. Thats what got me into metal. |

Because he asked for Black Metal not just any metal. |
Can some one recommend me some technical/progressive metal. Im not talking about the popular bands like Opeth, DT, Symphony X and Spiral Architect. I want to know about some relatively unknown bands.
|

I was joking...I just meant I don't care whether it's considered "real" black metal or not. |

Before I start, this is not directed at you, but at people getting into black metal in general. I can't stand when people come into the genre saying how terrible the production is. The production is not top quality recording studio state of the art, etc, but it is the best production for the music. If a majority of BM had crystal clear production, it would be terrible. Half of what makes black metal great is the atmosphere, and a lot of the atmosphere is obtained through the production qualities. Take for example Burzum - Filosofem. This album has tons of fuzz, yet I would consider it to be one of the most perfectly produced black metal albums. Perfect production doesn't always mean crystal clear, but what is perfect for the music. So saying that the production for most black metal "blows" is very very wrong. If you don't like the production, stay away from the music. It's not as though you have to listen to it. If you really want to get into Black Metal, then you should visit the Black Metal Thread and check out the albums mentioned in the first post. Don't try to get yourself into the genre with a bunch of psuedo-black, half-black bands, listen to the real thing. I'd recommend starting with Burzum - Filosofem / Hvis Lyset Tar Oss and Darkthrone - Transylvanian Hunger / A Blaze In The Northern Sky. |
Alright thanks everyone, I've started to get into black metal in the last few days, partially due to your help. Thanks again. I've found some albums with fairly clear production that didn't suck, too.

I would like to recomend Alter Bridge. This is album One Day Remains was veiwed wrong by alot of people. Everytime i ask someone do you know Alter Bridge? If its a yes i ask do u like them? They say no their alot like creed. They are not creed. Not even close..the songs they've done on that cd Creed could never do. Tremonti and the guys have definatly improved greatly and hooking up with Myles Kennedy who is forming to be one of the most exciting frontment when live. Tremonti's breathtaking solos win the croud. And Myles voice and Scott Stapps voice cant be compared...their different.
Their first single Open Your Eyes sound alot like Creed, they didnt want to loose all their old creed fans. People got the wrong impression...Broken Wings sounds like Creed as well so people said, this is creed with a different singer. It isnt, listen ot their cd, listen to metalingus, Creed couldnt imagine doing this song. This cd is much heavier than the creed cd's. The sound is not similar. Their next CD will not sound like Creed. No more, it will be heaveir is what AB fans have heard from Tremonti. The Record label gives them no promotion as well so their sales for One Day Remains sucked. Theres alot of interveiws and live performances at www.alterbridgeband.net jus click on media. They have like a load of stuff there.:thumb: |
