It's been my favorite since the first time I heard it. It has the most amazing atmosphere of any release of any genre of any time.

I really dislike Brave Murder Day though, Mikael's 'cleaner' growls totally take away from the atmosphere. Renske's tortured screams are a huge part of what makes December Souls so mystic.

Txus 05-19-2007 11:12 AM

I don't share the same point of view with the Miakel "cleaner" growls since I love that album, and I think it's perfect with Mikael and blah blah blah. Still, DODS is great..probably my favorite Katatonia album but I prefer the new era as a whole.

Poofy 666 05-19-2007 11:12 AM

I like listening to Tomb of Insomnia when I walk around in the woods.

Nepenthe 05-19-2007 11:13 AM

Mikael's growl is just too by the books. Yeah, it is very good, but there's nothing different about it. Renske has a very unique voice, and it just fits perfectly with the music.

Txus 05-19-2007 11:15 AM

Velvet Thorns (Of Drynwhyl) has to be the best thing Katatonia has ever done man \m/

I'm goign to listen to that album after this !T.O.O.H.! album finishes kicking my ***.

Nepenthe 05-19-2007 11:22 AM

Gateways To Bereavement, In Silence Enshrined, and Without God are my favorite. Elohim Meth is very good too, for an interlude.

Txus 05-19-2007 11:33 AM

Without God is very good too. I want a Katatonia shirt with the old logo :(

Nepenthe 05-19-2007 11:34 AM

Without God is definitely Renske's best vocal performance, and the perfect example of how much better his voice fits into the old Katatonia atmosphere than Mikael's deep and clean growls.

the2stranger 05-19-2007 11:45 AM

Aah, katatonia, great great band.

Both eras are great although I really don't like Discouraged Ones.
All the songs sound the same on that album.

Ok people, where is the love for some funeral doom?
Quite a lot of people in here seemed to enjoy it a few months back, now it seem the love has died. :(

I uploaded Bloody Panda's full length for the DU, that's somegreat fd/sludge/avant-garde/whatever.

np: Nadja - Clinodactyl
All hail Nadja.

Nepenthe 05-19-2007 11:46 AM

I love funeral doom, but too much of it sounds the same, so I've all but completely halted further delving into it. I enjoy Thergothon and Evoken on a regular basis still though.

Daven 05-19-2007 11:47 AM

I dont know what happened to me, I got in this FD binge some time ago. I still listen to Tyranny and CV like every week, but not as often as i used to. I'll check the BP though.

Both are nice bands.

BP is really weird, they have a female vocalist, but for once it's not that annoying. :p
And it's just ugly and huge music.

I'm kind of curious about the new Fallen too, it'ssupposed to have a female vocalist too, but I prefer the low bassy voice on the debut by a longshot.

Txus 05-19-2007 12:03 PM

I love BP but the album you uploaded for the DU petey is in Megashit and that doesn't work for me. Thanks anyway :)

Iron Bars 05-19-2007 12:35 PM

Bloody Panda are great. I had my first Moss and Nadja encounter this week. Moss I like, Nadja not so much but I have Body Cage ready to listen too (for the first time) so I might change my mind.

Not doom related: after seeing Txus avatar I'm going to listen to some Vintersorg first.

Which Nadja did you hear?

np: Nadja - Blank.
:p

Iron Bars 05-19-2007 12:40 PM

Moss/Nadja split that was uploaded in the DU.

the2stranger 05-19-2007 12:52 PM

Then your thoughts should pobably change after hearing The Bodycage.
The production on the newer albums is just that much better and does way more justice to the music.
I think my favorite album is Thaumogenesis though.
One song, over an hour long, but so good and addictive.
That song really carries me away and when the CD stops, I want more. :p

np: Nadja - Sandskin

RetiredAt21 05-19-2007 12:56 PM

Moss \m/

Nepenthe 05-19-2007 01:16 PM

Thaumogenesis is definitely Nadja's densest work.

The ending of Forgotten Tomb's Steal My Corpse might be one of the greatest moments in doom metal.

Any Forest Of Shadows fans? I just listened to Where Dreams Turn To Dust for the first time, and it's some exceptional stuff. Much better than the middle of the road doom I'm used to hearing.

repcak 05-20-2007 12:57 PM

i just listen to 'Sleep Mirrored' by Shape of Despair!

this is one of the moments in life, where you're so happy that bands like SoD exist... this song is so... perfect for this moment right now....
i could even cry...

Txus 05-20-2007 01:02 PM

They're my favorite FD band, they never get boring.

Angels of Distress is a perfect album IMHO.

repcak 05-20-2007 01:03 PM

yes, they are. Pantheist are good too, but whenever i have to decide between them i always choose SoD.

I love FoS, the full length Departure is also ace.
This guy makes some great music, but goes completely unoticed I feel.
yes, they are. Pantheist are good too, but whenever i have to decide between them i always choose SoD.
Same.
SoD are great.
Angels Of Distress so amazingly good.

Nepenthe 05-20-2007 01:37 PM

Yes I was surprised at how solid Forest Of Shadows was, as I've never heard any one mention the name before. The violins are perfect. Not overdramatic and goth, just melancholic and beautiful. And it's nice to hear the flutes and violins not overused, as they are in practically everything else that uses them.

repcak 05-20-2007 01:39 PM

Sleep Mirrored is one of my fav. songs by SoD.

Angel of Distress - i had this even for a long time as my user title

Phototropic 05-20-2007 03:00 PM

I like Where Dreams Turn to Dust. It's good deathy doom stuff.

metal-militia 05-21-2007 03:20 PM

Just got Trouble's - Run To The Light off ebay. :chug:

np Saint Vitus - Ice Monkey

pate 05-21-2007 07:40 PM

Trouble is so awesome. I missed their show in Chicago last night, but a few friends went to it. I hear it was a good show.

rippa32 05-23-2007 12:27 AM

What are trouble like? Are they very similair to traditional doom like Saint Vitus, Pentagram etc?
