I'd rather vote for someone who I feel has a chance of getting into office and I can agree with on issues than somebody who doesn't stand a chance just to make a point.

These days it's only going to take away votes from either side of a party so it's essentially voting for one of the main party candidates anyway.

unfortunately the way the gov't is structured, more parties in congress would result in slow legislation and policy making. Couple that with the fact the government is slow to changes to prevent major power shifts. The only real change could only happen if the paradigm shifts with the parties that are in power.
