Connecticut is the same way. It's just filled with arrogant but oblivious white people. Massachusets has the upper cultural hand because while they are as wealthy and arrogant as us they are more active in politics and art. We just blow all our money and good schools on getting weed from Hartford.
Thank God I'm going to college in New York, instead of UConn like the rest of the dorks. |
Is he the chick on the left or the chick on the right?
Believe me, it's top on my list of preferred vacations-to-places-I've-never-been.
I'm unsure if I would want to live there though. What's it like in terms of social culture? Any different customs from America, or things like that?
It'd be a great place to live. Of all the American students that are studying with me at my Uni, only one wouldn't like to live here. Social culture is a lot more relaxed here, I think. From what I understand, PC isn't the law to end all laws here. Everyone's a lot easier going I think. Different slang words of course. Rhyming slang is the hardest to pick up, and then you have all the stereotypical sayings. Hmmm... Customs are a bit iffy. The designation of Australia as "the land of the free", "the lucky country", etc means that we have a lot of different people creating a hodgepodge society. I suppose being friendly is the key. I don't think you could get away with the usual "New Yorker" push and shove through the streets, without getting a fist to the face. Other than that, we are very Americanised now, unfortunately, but there is still a lot of European and Asian heritage. And of course, nothing beats sitting on the verandah, with a cool breeze and a beer in the hand, spinning yarns. ------------------ And as Dave said, Melbourne has more Greeks than any city outside of Athens. Yes, that's right. More Greeks than Thessaloniki. |
New York is still great. If a little dirty.
The thing I hate is the fact that I was born there, and lived there for the first years of my childhood, and yet retain none of the mythical knowledge of the city's idiosyncracies or the accent that are requirements for being a bonafide New Yorker.
Chicago is better :p (but seriously, it is)
Thank God I'm going to college in New York, instead of UConn like the rest of the dorks.
I actually know people who go to UConn :( Of course, they are [mostly] middle-class kids from Boston other than upper-class kids from Connecticut. BTW, has the Great Barrier Reef disappeared yet? A childhood dream of mine is to snorkel on the reef but I hear it's in dire straits.
I heard Dire Straits was looking for new members, but I didn't know they'd hired on the GBR... But seriously, the Great Barrier Reef (on my doorstep) is very much still alive. It's more the future of it that everyone is worried about. It takes a very long time to get coral the size of some of the GBR gardens. So, we have tourists breaking off pieces, either by accident or on purpose, and that means that the Reef is very slowly diminishing. But people are preserving it, so all we can do is let the thing repair itself. There was a big kahfuffle about the closure of certain fish breeding ground to commercial fisherman this year, as I recall. |
Chicago is better :p
(but seriously, it is)
I've lived there too, and as far as a delightful city goes Chicago certainly has New York beat. I just love the amalgamation of culture in New York. I promise not to break off any coral pieces. :) You chaps have also got that twelve-armed sea star with the spines that friggin' destroy all the coral in their paths. I'm sure they don't help when combined with tourist impact. |
So me and my girl just had a fight...this sucks. Now I'm talkin' to her on the phone and it's been nothin' but like silence for the past 10 minutes or so...with an awkward "yeah" in between...

It's Emperor.
/spelling nazi.
Awkward phone silence has to be the most uncomfortable situation I've ever experienced.
It is terrible...just got off the phone, and she was like "I'm gonna call you back" and I said "ok, whatever, fine"...then we hung up... I feel horrible right now. |

I hate that. I will either apologise, ask to ring her back in a few minutes, or start talking about something off-topic. |

I usually sit there with the occasional "yeah" to break the silence until I start a conversation about something completely meaningless. Then again, I suck at phone conversations. |
One thing I hate about girls is that they never say what they want to say, at least to me...I hate this:
Me: What's wrong? Her: (pouty face) Oh nothing Me: Are you sure? Her: yeah, I'm OK It's like, what do they have to hide? Why be afraid to tell what's on your mind? Sorry, I'm just ranting and venting frustration on here...and I would rather do that on stage like I usually do, but my band's next gig (this saturday) has been cancelled so that further expands my frustration... |

You rant on stage? You take pouring your emotions into your music to the next level.
|
Now Jason, what's the best city in Australia, besides Sydney?
/// And even though both cities are great, New York > Chicago. I don't know, New York just has something to it that no other city in America has. I can't really put it into words though. I may be biased though, it's practically my second home if I ever had one. Oh, and no matter how preppy some of the East Coast may be, it beats the West Coast any given day. |
You rant on stage? You take pouring your emotions into your music to the next level.
No, I'm just a really intense guitarist live...When I go onstage and play my music I just let everything go and metaphorically speaking, let my rage show...I rarely do vocals, I just let the music do the talking... If any of that makes any sense please let me know. |

I guess you could call us post-thrash since we're not entirely a thrash band..but yeah, we just take all the metal we love and use those inflences wisely :p ...while NOT sounding "-core"ish  |
Hmmm, this might be asking too much but, I'm looking for some metal that has a lot of philosophical meaning behind their songs.
Any suggestions? |
Behemoth springs to mind, but I have a feeling they're not quite what you're looking for.

Try more of them then. Their vocalist/guitarist Nergal is the sort of guy that has a lot depth and puts a lot meaning into everything he does. Every song and album has hand-written notes by him decribing it and explaining what he wanted to do and what it means to him. |

FYI, I actually lawled upon reading that. Madey- Hawt. I'm out for the night guys. See you all tomorrow. Of course, only when I get back from snowboarding. |
