Destroy All Girls 01-26-2011 04:43 AM

maybe you just have innate "feel"

APirate 01-26-2011 06:53 PM

technique is a must, especially with electronics

theory doesn't mean shit

Nepenthe 01-26-2011 06:55 PM

idk man i just make things sound good i don't pay any attention to 'techniques' or anything and i'm not trying to brag but i can make pretty legit sounding production

Destroy All Girls 01-26-2011 07:06 PM

you could take it to a whole new level if you wanted to

Bitchfork 01-26-2011 07:09 PM

I only use some minimal chord structure knowledge and take it from there with whatever I'm trying to express.

Nepenthe 01-26-2011 07:13 PM

nah dude i believe i will get to that whole new level on my own tbh. i become a little bit better each and every day just by constantly making music and figuring things out on my own.

you guys are really placing wayyy too much importance on it. almost to the point of just relying on it.

Larry Bird 01-26-2011 07:15 PM

ur not elying on enething

Nepenthe 01-26-2011 07:17 PM

relying on awesomeness

Destroy All Girls 01-26-2011 07:54 PM

only theory I know is reading music, root note stuff and basic harmony really.
nah dude i believe i will get to that whole new level on my own tbh. i become a little bit better each and every day just by constantly making music and figuring things out on my own.

I don't believe it's impossible but surely you could accelerate this process and further your understanding of it so much more if you learnt from people who've gone this road before.

Not like you have to take their word as law or anything, but the resource is there. It doesn't make sense to me not to at least consider the value of using it.

Nepenthe 01-26-2011 08:04 PM

i just feel like if i start thinking in terms of "this is how it's supposed to be done" it'll only start limiting me. like, i'm always finding new ways to do something or a new sound, way to create, whatever by just fucking around and saying "let's see what this does". when i say constantly making music i mean it, literally from the second i get home from work until i go to sleep i've got something that i'm playing around with.

idk i'm just more inclined to learning by doing than learning by reading about

Destroy All Girls 01-26-2011 08:10 PM

yeah understandable. recently i've got like 4 half hour sessions a week to record stuff

Nepenthe 01-26-2011 08:18 PM

this has been the one good thing about moving down to florida, all the time i get to spend making music instead of out getting drunk every night

but i see where you're coming from too. obv knowing theory and techniques is the most reliable way to become a proficient artist. just not the way i want to go about it.

Destroy All Girls 01-26-2011 08:38 PM

listening to Die Weisse Rose, A Martyrium Of White Roses

no doubt a Mr. Ron rec

Bitchfork 01-27-2011 12:22 AM

I almost always only make my ambient music at night. What I'll do is create a few samples of music and use them throughout the track, varying them drastically with Microsoft Sound Recorder and just letting it flow. It's a terrible technique and I'd advice everyone to condemn it because it leads to a billion B-sides.

But it creates awesome drones if you need that, and since that's generally what I do it works better than it should.

Nepenthe 01-27-2011 12:29 AM

honestly though i think things like that, just non traditional techniques that one comes up with on their own, will lead to a more unique and individual sound. so keep doing it man, just keep finding ways to expand upon it. that's what it's about, just keep experimenting and developing.

Bitchfork 01-27-2011 12:37 AM

http://www.mediafire.com/?3pm6d1a935snkj1 You can see how it worked out here. Astral Chapters are mine (in order of 1 then 2 if you couldn't guess).

Thanks for that all. On this other EP I have I did a bunch of improv (technically not aesthetically) and noise and bm and wrapped it all into some huge ambient/drone package. I've already listened to some of your stuff and can see what you're talking about.

Nepenthe 01-27-2011 12:41 AM

i'll check it out tomorrow, bout to head to sleep so i can muster together at least 5 hours of sleep for work

the stuff that i actually complete and "publish" is usually the least experimental of my output. most of what i do my 'experimenting and developing' on never gets finished, i just fuck around with it, figure out how to do something cool, and then drop it.

Bitchfork 01-27-2011 01:06 AM

my stuff is so varied that none of it is necessarily more experimental. a lot of it is just shittier.

i'm working on a short little ep right now, dark ambient stuff and will have some sludged doomd bits as well. should be done by next weekend. i'll have a song to post tomorrow, you will prob like it.

Bitchfork 01-27-2011 08:23 PM

and also a fyi/tmi tidbit, the blasphymartyr thing was mappy's idk if you listened to that or not.

Nepenthe 01-27-2011 08:24 PM

persistent repetition of phrases is phenomenal

yeah i saw that didn't listen yet tho. i prob will this weekend.

Bitchfork 01-27-2011 08:25 PM

and also nepenthe, i know what your name means thanks to the scarlet letter. always liked that word.

Bitchfork 01-27-2011 08:28 PM

mhm mhm. do you have any blissed-out noise recs to give?

Nepenthe 01-27-2011 08:29 PM

i know not lethe nor nepenthe. great line.

i can't remember if i first saw it in poe's the raven or the outsider by lovecraft, prob lovecraft. but yeah i fell in love with it immediately, have used it since then. that was years and years ago.

Nepenthe 01-27-2011 08:32 PM
mhm mhm. do you have any blissed-out noise recs to give?
hmmm maybe neotropic. or delia gonzalez and gavin rossum.

neither are extremely noise-y tho

Bitchfork 01-27-2011 08:38 PM

yeah I'm just looking for blissed-out ambience/noise - like stuff that oozes delsym

Nepenthe 01-27-2011 08:39 PM

delia gonzalez and gavin rossum - days of mars

Bitchfork 01-27-2011 08:57 PM

thanks, and though i may be beating a dead horse...

It is indeed a great album.

Bitchfork 01-28-2011 12:26 AM

My friend has projects (that he's posted the link to on rym [http://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/mathos/franz_joseph/ for example, he's done this with all his releases] so no ban, Tyler, if you even do that for links) that are appropriate for this thread:

haz has recently informed me that my life with the thrill kill kult is the only real industrial

Destroy All Girls 01-28-2011 09:06 AM

once again, I hate 70% of their discography
once again, I hate 70% of their discography
too non linear?????

Destroy All Girls 01-28-2011 05:04 PM

actually, too linear

they are really boring and ho-hum for the most part. you'd probably like Hit & Run Holiday it's like some weird eclectic industrial rock throwback to 60's pop music

Sexplosion! and 13 Above The Night are my favourites

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLvbcJ8nUig

Nepenthe 01-28-2011 07:41 PM

here is the dark ambient/funeral doomish song i was talking about

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=1117720&songID=10208445

whole EP should be done by next weekend. hopefully my buddy has the cover art finished by then too.

Bitchfork 01-28-2011 08:48 PM

Unfortunately I can't say I enjoyed the 2 minute psychedelic noise thing you did at the beginning but I liked the post-black/doom-ish bit.
