Today in class, we listened to songs off Abbey Road and The White Album, and also "I Am The Walrus". If some of you have some lyrical questions about that, or "Come Together", we looked into a lot of songs today. I'd be happy to share.
|
Yeah coudl you explain I Am The Walrus because that song confuses me, great song though
in other words, im so happy because the chorus teacher decided to let us sing Imagine in our concert, and were doing Mother from Floyd,im doing guitar:) |
Today is my birthday! And tomorrow I'm seeing Paul!

HAPPY ****ING BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its my friends birthday too |
Ok, while I'm not entirely sure of the meaning of "I Am The Walrus" in its entirety, we went over a lot of its parts. I guess the song is supposed to be frantic, with a lot of random imagery thrown together, kind of like a nightmare. The noise at the very beginning of the song is supposed to be like a police siren, which helps to establish the paranoid feeling. Lines like "yellow matter custard, dripping from a dead dog's eye" also help to do this.
The phrase "I am the walrus" comes from Lewis Carol's Through The Looking Glass, where Alice reads a story about a walrus who lures oysters out onto the beach and them eats them. I guess the same could be said about capitalism, or something. Lennon also throws in some stuff about society and how people can be revolting ("Crabalocker fishwife pronographic priestess" is like another way of calling somebody a slut, crablocker = full of crabs), and he talks about this a lot in his later songs also. However, the first line of the song "I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together" shows that Lennon is no better than the rest. That one was a little tough. EDIT: Happy birthday Deus  |
HAPPY ****ING BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! its my friends birthday too
Thanks! I liked the analysis on I Am the Walrus. Now that I've seen it, it seems really intuitive and obvious. But, I had no clue what it meant before that. |
Happy birthday John lennon!

^^ His birthdays not until Sunday

I've always loved the later Beatles (Sgt. Pepper's on), but lately I'm becoming more and more of a sucker for their "lame" early stuff. Those sappy love songs are just so **** catchy! I'm actually happy I'm turning soft as I get older, now there's more Beatles albums that I can reach for!
He wrote the line "Here's another clue for you all, the walrus was paul" for people like you that read too much into songs. Why would you even try to find any meaning in I Am The Walrus haha.
JOHN 1968: "We write lyrics, and I write lyrics that you don't realize what they mean till after. Especially some of the better songs or some of the more flowing ones, like 'Walrus.' The whole first verse was written without any knowledge. With 'I Am the Walrus,' I had 'I am he as you are he as we are all together.' I had just these two lines on the typewriter, and then about two weeks later I ran through and wrote another two lines and then, when I saw something, after about four lines, I just knocked the rest of it off. Then I had the whole verse or verse and a half and then sang it. I had this idea of doing a song that was a police siren, but it didn't work in the end (sings like a siren) 'I-am-he-as-you-are-he-as...' You couldn't really sing the police siren."

JOHN 1980: "The first line was written on one acid trip one weekend. The second line was written on the next acid trip the next weekend, and it was filled in after I met Yoko. Part of it was putting down Hare Krishna. All these people were going on about Hare Krishna, Allen Ginsberg in particular. The reference to 'Element'ry penguin' is the elementary, naive attitude of going around chanting, 'Hare Krishna,' or putting all your faith in any one idol. I was writing obscurely, a la Dylan, in those days. It's from 'The Walrus and the Carpenter.' 'Alice in Wonderland.' To me, it was a beautiful poem. It never dawned on me that Lewis Carroll was commenting on the capitalist and social system. I never went into that bit about what he really meant, like people are doing with the Beatles' work. Later, I went back and looked at it and realized that the walrus was the bad guy in the story and the carpenter was the good guy. I thought, Oh, ****, I picked the wrong guy. I should have said, 'I am the carpenter.' But that wouldn't have been the same, would it? (singing) 'I am the carpenter...'"
Im not trying to offend you or anything, but I just dont think a song like "I Am The Walrus" should really be taken seriously. Basically it's a bunch of lines thrown together with a great melody, and great music. |
Yeah seriously people who try and 'interpret' Beatle songs really need to get a life. Why bother? Just enjoy the god **** music and the brilliance of the lyrics...who gives a **** what they mean?
I sure as hell don't, and **** I'm a fricken music major! (well, not exactly, but close) |
I was just telling the thread what we were talking about in class. My teacher could be full of shit for all I know.

Well im just saying its stupid to try and read into a song like I am the walrus. Why not do it with "Why Dont We Do It In The Road" "The pounding drums are definetley a reference to how he will pounding his woman on the road, and when he says the line why dont we do it in the read. I believe its a metaphor for lets have rough sex." |
Actually, after reading the quotes you posted from John, most of what he said proved me right. I didn't say I knew what the whole song meant, or if it meant anything, I was just talking about what some of the lines meant. I was right about the Walrus part, and while John might not have known it was about capitalism, Carroll sure as hell meant it that way. I was right about the siren too.
As for "Why Don't We Do It In The Road", obviously the lyrics mean nothing. That was another song of Paul's that he used to show off his vocal capabilities.
Yeah seriously people who try and 'interpret' Beatle songs really need to get a life. Why bother?
I just learned about the songs yesterday, and the complexity of John's lyrics are already beginning to interest me. I think it's pretty cool to actually understand the messages he was conveying. |
^^This is what you get to talk about in class? Lucky.
Today is my birthday! And tomorrow I'm seeing Paul!
Happy birthday! Lucky.. have fun.

So he did. |
I'm leaving right now to go see Paul! I'm so excited! I will probably write down the set list.
That's awesome. You guys are lucky. What seats did you get?
My seats were way up high, but they were near the stage, and I had really good binoculars. It was absolutely amazing. Definitely the best concert I've ever been to. The set: First, some weird techno stuff that was really bad. Some sort of opening act, I guess. Then, there was a video of Paul McCartney's life. Then, the actual show... Magical Mystery Tour Some Wings song, I didn't recognize it. Jet. An older song, I don't recall the name specifically. Drive My Car. Till There Was You. Like a Wheel. Some weird instrumental bit that sounded like Foxey Lady Got to Get You Into my Life It's a Fine Line (from the new album) Baby I'm Amazed The Long and Winding Road Some early song, I didn't recognize it. I Will An acoustic track from the new album For No One Fixing a Hole Another Wings song I didn't recognize I'll Follow the Sun Follow Me (I think that's what it's called) A classical piece by Bach, which inspired... Blackbird Eleanor Rigby Happy Birthday (to John Lennon) Too Many People (I think that's what it's called) She Came in Through the Bathroom Window Good Day Sunshine Band on the Run Penny Lane I've got a Feeling Back in the USSR Hey Jude Live and Let Die Encore 1: Yesterday Get Back Helter Skelter Encore 2: Please Please Me Let it Be Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Reprise/The End. |
Sounds like an awesome concert :thumb:
|
Its Baby I'm Amazed!
And you need to get into early Beatles more! He was doing Please Please Me? Weird, I always thought that was vocally more Lennon's. |
That's a freaking huge set. I think I'd almost want to leave before it ended...wait, who am I kidding? Goddamm I want to see Paul live!!!
|
Baby I'm Amazed!
Maybe* :) Seeing him in November. |
65 years ago, a legend was born, sparked by music he created the Quarrymen, later the Beatles, a band the wold impact a world in the 60's and later on, for 3 decades the beatles still have a huge following and devoted fans, 25 years ago John Lennon was shot by Mark David Chapman, this impacted the world in such a way that would never be forgotten, Lennon's soul still lives on in the hearts of Peace-Activist's, Beatles followers, and aspiring musicians, he will never be forgotten.I wasnt alive when Beatles were a band, or when John was still alive, but i still feel so miserable about his death.
Happy birthday John Winston Lennon and may you rest in peace All im lsitening to today is the Beatles, every single song is the Beatles on my playlist. |
Its Baby I'm Amazed!
And you need to get into early Beatles more! He was doing Please Please Me? Weird, I always thought that was vocally more Lennon's.
Maybe I'm Amazed. Right. As for the early Beatles stuff, I recognized the one song, just didn't remember the name. And the other one was recorded before they were the Beatles. It wasn't with Ringo or Pete Best on drums. So I think I should get some leeway for not knowing that one. Happy birthday John! /is playing Come Together |
Is "Like A Wheel" not called "Let Me Roll It?" Or is it a different song. "My heart is like a wheel...let me roll it" But anyways yep it's old John's birthday today. Pity he's not here today.
If he was what do you think he'd be doing? I think he would have probably made some great rock, and pop songs. And he probably would have been a big voice in the war protest. And he music may have become a little computerized, I dont no what he would have done with computers. |
Maybe I'm Amazed. Right.

You guys really need to get Ram That seems like the exact set list, song by song that I saw Were you like  when he played Foxy Lady? And did he do funny little dances in Hey Jude? |
all of them had pretty descent solo career's
Ringo didn't. He narrated Thomas the Tank Engine. |
Happy birthday John. I'm listening to Jealous Guy :)

It was also cool when he played the happy birthday song for John. But, I'd imagine the set list is, for the most part, exactly the same from show to show. With production that high, it really all needs to be planned out, I think. |
Happy birthday John. I'm listening to Jealous Guy :)
Indeed, I'm playing Mother. |
Ive been playing nothing but beatles and more specifically lennon songs to celebrate his birthday! Althought it's already over where I live :(
|
Does anyone know if there's any backward message in that last little part of A Day in the Life? It's such a bizzarre little piece that you'd think there'd be something in there.
