this was a few pages back but whatever

plants make their proteins through photosynthesis. since plant proteins are less complex than animal proteins, they have fewer amino acids. when you eat plants, your body cuts the protein chains into individual amino acids, then forms it's own proteins. your body needs every amino acid to form all the proteins you need to survive, so if you only eat plants, you become protein deficient, and unhealthy unless you take protein supplements.

I don't know what bs science route 1 said about it, but if he said that, he was right.
He just said you need certain amino acids, he didn't elaborate. Prepare for an arguement though.

kaseytheawesome 06-11-2006 10:03 PM

an arguement from who?

_Tyler 06-11-2006 10:06 PM

Can't you compensate for the deficiencies of one plant by eating a different plant that has the amino acids the other one lacks? I know you can't get all the essential aminos from eating just beans, but you can get them all from eating beans and rice can you not?

bottlerocket 06-11-2006 10:14 PM

Plants don't have certain amino acids...just like humans don't have certain proteins plants have. It's just their biochemical make up.

kaseytheawesome 06-11-2006 10:17 PM

no, different plants have different amino acids, but there are some (I don't know if it's just a few or whatever) that are only found in animals. humans need all 20 amino acids to produce the proteins to survive. you can get all of the essential amino acids by eating a combination like that, but your body is not able to create enough of the non essential ones (which is ironic) to sustain a vegeterian diet without taking supplements.

eating most meats actually will provide you with all 20 amino acids, but that isn't to say you can sustain yourself on just meat.

Are you saying there is no other possible way to obtain all the necessary amino acids without eating meat? If not, your argument is pointless.

kaseytheawesome 06-11-2006 10:24 PM

you probably could, tyler

did you even read my post, pat? you can get all amino acids by taking supplements, you just can't be stupid about it.

_Tyler 06-11-2006 10:26 PM

oh shit.

Lazybassplr56 06-11-2006 10:57 PM

I had a Crunchwrap Supreme for dinner. It was wonderful.

Special Brew 06-11-2006 10:58 PM

I had one bad crunchwrap a couple of weeks ago, and now I can't stand them. Before then, I couldn't get enough of them and got one at every opportunity.

BuddyBigsby 06-11-2006 11:04 PM

The Crunchwrap is an art often not perfected by the lesser employees of the TB. It is indeed too good for fast food.

BuddyBigsby 06-11-2006 11:05 PM

Same with that new bowl at KFC. Oh man.

haha, well I thought I read it a couple of times but I guess I skipped that last sentence.

Feel The Darkness 06-11-2006 11:28 PM

No one's ever died from a protein deficiency, and most people don't have to take supplements as items such as soy milk and other veg items already contain such stuff as to keep one healthy, but either way, that arguement does not make veganism pointless as route1 used to say, but yes, if one does not know the basics of nutrition and tries to run on a shitty diet, you can and most probably will become ill. There's still no need to bring that up when talking about veganism as most, not even thinking about it, live a vegan lifestyle and have no problems by just being logical.
