I don't like Green Day but there was no reason to bring them into this.

The art of arranging sounds in time so as to produce a continuous, unified, and evocative composition, as through melody, harmony, rhythm, and timbre.
Vocal or instrumental sounds possessing a degree of melody, harmony, or rhythm.

A musical composition.
The written or printed score for such a composition.
Such scores considered as a group: We keep our music in a stack near the piano.
A musical accompaniment.
A particular category or kind of music.
An aesthetically pleasing or harmonious sound or combination of sounds

I don't see how rap doesn't fit that.

pohl_56 09-24-2005 09:47 PM

I would have to say that one thing that bugs me about this forum is the ganging up on newer members. I too am one and dont really see what the point in attacking their comments is. Especially since half of the people on here dont make any sense and the new members are more intelligent anyway. Please dont take it personally but its just a little thing that royally pisses me off.

anywho-I wouldnt say Green Day sux but I certainly would not say I like them. They have a couple of DECENT songs but that about it.

More teenagers are getting into the genre of Classic Rock. I have noticed a sort of 'Revolution' in music. I have noticed the people at my school starting to like more and more older stuff and I think that I have played a major roll in it.

Thats it for now. Anybody here feel the effects of the hurricane?

RockAndRoll 09-24-2005 09:48 PM
Has anyone heard Joni Mitchell's cover of Blackbird? I think it's pretty darn good.
I don't think it could be anywhere near as good as the CSN cover I heard.

 You just destroyed your cause right there

Anyway, to an above poster, a revolution in music would be something new, not just listening to the old stuff. Granted we need a musical revolution badly, and inspiration from the classics is definitally a plus.

rockinbass17 09-24-2005 10:32 PM

Well, you can't deny that the revolution aspect of old rock and roll has pretty much died out. How many bands today make intelligent, thought out social statements? Not many. Now, making a song criticizing society is what gets a band money, and many write "revolution" songs just for that. They are songs that have not been thought through at all. In that, the whole sense of rock being the "voice" for a generation is gone, and now it's just generic, money making shcemes. Because of this MTV/TRL hold on music, there probably won't be a musical revolution anytime soon.
Now, this isn't for all bands today, just a good handfull of them. So maybe there will be a new band rising from underground to start a revolution. Who knows? It's unlikely, but it could happen.

magicbus 09-24-2005 10:41 PM
and the new members are more intelligent anyway.
Uh ohhhh. BURRNN.

Does anybody own the "Rock and Roll Circus" dvd? If so, how is it? I really like the Lennon/Mitchell/Clapton/Richards version of "Yer Blues". I kinda hope the rest of the dvd is like that.

I've always been weary of Rock and Roll Circus when I see it in stores. The concept of it (though I've never seen it) just reminds me too much of the Sgt. Peppers movie, which I've heard is embarrassing.

Probably not. CSN are better musicians. The main reason why I like Joni Mitchell is because of her lyrics.

It really doesn't have a theme, Brian was drunk through the whole thing and Mick didn't like the end results but its worth it for the Who's performance of A Quick One While He's Away, I always skip the John/Yoko/Ry Cooder stuff just cause it never caught my attention.
Jethro Tull do a good job of lip syncing. And the Stones are visibely not focused.

And just to put my two cents in, I'm sick of everyone complaining about how people only listen to what MTV puts on. If the people want to only watch MTV let them be, the music isn't that bad. Do you ever wonder why music is popular? I know its not because it sounds like crap, its cause the majority of people like it. Give me Green Day over DT any day or one of my (new band) favorites - MCR (Yes thats right) over Styx/ACDC/Nirvana any day. The popular MTV don't suck they just play a different style of music weather it be Pop, Punk, Pop-Punk or anything in between.
MCR or Greenday might not be the best musicians but they do know how to write a catchy song. I could careless if the drummer can't drum or the bassist can hardly tune his bass all I want in the end result is good music and in my opinion those bands make good music.
Another thing is people constantly saying Rap sucks, well your clearly not open minded. You can't just trash a whole genre because after watching MTV (omg hypocrite) for an hour then decided that 50 Cent sucks (I dissagree) and then just say that all Rap sucks. Its like not liking ACDC and saying rock sucks, and that all the songs sound the same and have the same style. To sum it all up, if your trashing bands cause they are popular and are trying to be cool by not liking popular bands: Stop, your an idiot.

Edit: Omg, rant sorry if I'm somewhat confusing.
Edit2: And I'm not an idiot if thats what your thinking (Or would like to think I'm not) because I like these bands, I like alot of types of music like: Rap, Country, Post Punk, Punk, Pop, R&B, recently Jazz, Electronic, Funk and anything else, almost. (omg! orginal).
 You just destroyed your cause right there

dud u cant spell 'crap' w/o 'rap' rite lololol

so anyway, one thing that is bugging me is that there is a line in the Rolling Stones song "Ruby Tuesday" that reads "yesterday don't matter when it's gone".

now, i remember reading that John Lennon once said that "once we do something, you can expect the Rolling Stones to do it a few months later", so I can't help but think that maybe Keith Richards had the song "Yesterday" in mind when he wrote the lyric, even if it wasn't about the song itself. If that makes sense.
Robert plant is a great singer
No.
Last night we were going to frosh, and there were cops hiding and pulling everyone over and going through their entire vehicles. They took our hundred dollar glass bong, my friends pipe (he's had that pipe for over three years now, and he's probably smoked up with it a few times a day since he got it), they found our alcohol but I told him I was 19 and since it wasn't opened he let it go....and he didnt' find our weed because I hid it in a tape cassette case (the perfect hiding spot, trust me) and put it in the glove compartment with like 30 other tapes. My one friend had to go to the back of the guys cop car...and then eventually he just let us go after taking our pipe and bong (the bastard). ****ing peice a **** storm never even hit hard! We didn't get but 2-3 inches of rain! What a boring hurricane! 2.4 million people (I think a new world record!!!) evacuate and for what? A hurricane that misses us by a couple hundred miles. Needless to say I'm very disappointed.

My dad took 6 hours to get 8 miles!!!! (world record?) Houston was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo slow it was if time stopped! I'm so glad I didn't evacuate! He ran out of gas too.

But Robert Plant is not a bad singer.

I read something interesting the other day about how Carlos Santana got discovered. One night at the Fillmore West in San Francisco where Paul Butterfield Blues Band were headlining Paul Butterfield alledgedly took a few tabs of acid he ended up on a rather unpleasant trip. Un-able to perform Bill Graham looked around saw some familer faces in the audience, and pulled together an impromptu jam that included members of the Grateful Dead and the Jefferson Airplane and Butterfield Band member Michael Bloomfield, to cover for Butterfield who was high as a kite at this point. They were in need of another guitarist so (I forgot his name) goes up to Bill Graham and says "Hey, you know, I know this Mexican kid from Tijuana. He loves playing blues and lovesw B.B. King. Will you let him play?" he said yes and Santana got to play. After the show Graham went up to him and asked if he had a band and if he wanted to start playing at the Fillmore. He lied and said yes and a week later the Santana Blues Band was born.

Edit: My Grandmother's house is underwater. :upset:

Paul McCartney or The Rolling Stones

Did you guys know John McLaughlin and Santana considered each other brothers? They made an album together called Love Devotion Surrender and I can't wait to hear it it's supposed to be great. That seems like it would be fun, especially if it's population increased so much from the Katrina refugees a few weeks ago, you could do all kinds of things, like drive around through Houston at 80mph

And as far as this whole New vs Old music goes:
I become somewhat uncomfortable when I am hanging around a group of people that don't like th same kind of music that I do, but I would never, under any circumstances, want to live in a world where everyone listened to the same kind of music that I did
It's kind of fun to have rare-ish taste in music because it just makes it all the more worthwhile when you have a friend that digs Jefferson Airplane and Django Rienhardt as much as you do
