I've read all of Tolkein's works......a lot of them are challenging to get through.

If you don't like long, boring descriptions that top the descriptions in the LOTR trillogy, dont read the Silmarillion!:p

But I loved them all.

Apocalyptic Raids 11-22-2005 11:55 PM

I know if I tried to read the LOTR books now, I would probably get bored, since the plot is fresh in my mind.

xizoesira 11-22-2005 11:56 PM

I was just thinking an hour ago when I read this thread that it might be time to read LotR again.

Cain 11-22-2005 11:59 PM

The Silmarillion is made excessively difficult due to the fact that Chris Tolkein lacks all the sense of his father's poetic, Celtic descriptions. The book is as dry as typical pre-John Keegan accounts of the Napoleonic Wars, if you catch my drift.

I just skip to the parts about Ungoliant, who is easily the baddest of the bad guys, since she's like the physical incarnation of evil. Melkor's been corrupted by evil, but c'mon. Ungoliant is a vast spider creature who vomits not darkness but "unlight" from every pore, and whose thirst for any consumable entity or thing was so enormous that the end of her life only came when she got lost in the deserts of Middle Earth and consumed herself.

Unfortunately, there's only a few pages about her.

Anyways, let's play "racism in unexpected places!"

LOTR's "Black Numenoreans," humans allied with Mordor, are described as black because they ARE black. In movies, popular depictions, and in story, the Corsairs, also allied with Mordor, are clearly Asians. The good guys are Nordic/Aryan Swede-looking types who speak eloquently and are brilliant at fighting.

Also, here's a handy guide to racism in "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers":

Black Ranger=black dude.
Pink Ranger=most obviously feminine female.
Red Ranger=Began as a vaguely Native American tough guy and then switched to a Mexican.
Yellow Ranger=Asian
White Ranger=The whitest dude, Tommy, who of course is the leader because he's smartest and strongest.

Shadows 11-23-2005 12:03 AM

I just got back from the movie. Easily the best out of the four released so far. My only issue was how they seemed to cut out 95% of what the book had leaving only the bare minimum. I guess they'd have to considering how long the book was, and luckily it still made for a killer movie.

I'll try, but I haven't read the book in years so it may be difficult. Basically they took out all the minimal stuff and left only the most importent plot-related things. They jumped from one tournament challenge to the next with maybe a mere few minutes in between. The story flew by very quickly. It basically consisted of Harry's dream and the dicussion about it, the challenges, the Yule ball thing, and the ordeal at the end. It was strung together so tightly that it felt more like 15 minutes then 3 hours.

Well, I don't have any unexpected racism, but I can tell you why Sesame Street is a drug show.

Thanks. Even though I'm a fan of the books, the movies have never interested me much. I might try catch this one on DVD when it comes out.

Every post I disagree with on MX makes me want to type a really angry rant in size seven bold red font, with plenty of expletives too. I don't know why; half the time the situation ends up resolving itself anyway.

Frustration from the vocalists polls?

The books were definitely better, but if you see any of the movies see this one.

This is off topic, but Dimmu Borgir's Stormblast re-release is surprisngly good. I thought it was going to be their good music reworked with an overly-symphonic feel like DCA, but they basically went back to the way they were 10 years ago only with really clear production.

Heheh, agreed. As for the LOTR, Harry Potter talk, I intend on reading the LOTR books eventually, but the movies (when I say movies I mean the first movie) ruined any potential Harry Potter enjoyment for me.

Shadows 11-23-2005 01:11 AM

Don't let it fool you. The book is always better then the movie.

I'm being stalked by the Riva.

blue3 11-23-2005 01:18 AM

How'd you know?

I've never read the LOTR books. I should, sometime.

Jacaranda 11-23-2005 01:19 AM

I'm a closet LOTR nerd, I love them books after I read them all fantasy books seemed dull. Just because they sorta started the whole Orcs, Goblins and Elves thing.

The Hobbit is my favorite.

Riva, whats the point of the "Post Here and you get Banned" thread? I really want to post... just so I have an excuse to use my other account.

The new Harry Potter really isn't that bad.

Leper 11-23-2005 01:52 AM

No I haven't. I know the books are always better than the movie, but the whole wizardry schtick doesn't really interest me that much.

/non-conformist:cool: :p

the2stranger 11-23-2005 04:33 AM

books > movies

I think I'll reread LOTR sometime, it has been 5 years ago since I read them the last time :(

Bartender 11-23-2005 04:36 AM
That was the part where they got their swords too... they basically cut out the bulk of the parts regarding the Shire, which is like cutting out the Prologue and the Epilogue... basically starting the story out of no-where and ending it without closure... that was my only major problem, the rest pwned.
The films are already some ten hours long, though.

Riva 11-23-2005 05:26 AM

But Saruman doesn't just die. He corrupts the Shire. And Pippin and Merry are supposed to be 5 feet tall after Treebeard gives them the Entbrew.

True

The lack of Tom Bombadil-o annoyed me in LOTR too... same with the lack of Barrow wights.
So they get all the stuff given to them at Rivendell eh?
No. Dumbarse, read the book.

The Black Ranger is black, the Yellow Ranger is asian, and the Pink Ranger is a girl. It's great, isn't it?

enjoy!
they rock live.
I've seen them twice already.
once at a festival, and once headlining their own show with a few metalcore(ugh) bands.

are they headlining, or supporting somone else?

They are supporting Children of Bodom, but they only get 5 songs so I hear because Trivium has a longer set then them. :\

CoB has a massive set of like 22 songs, so I hear. Which goes good from what I have heard that they only play 3 songs off the new album. God, does that album suck.

The only band I like from that list is AMon Amarth, and they only get to play 5 songs? that sucks.

I'm looking forward to the release of their dvd.
Which should have pyrotechnics and other very vikinglike stuff.

Nice.

A couple of years back we had mold growing everywhere - literally - and they didn't do anything about it. My English teacher got so sick from it as well.
