Mark Knopfler is a good guitarist, but Dire Straits does not impress me very much.
|
Brothers in Arms is such a fantastic album.
I have it on vinyl :D |
Also, to catch up on the vocal harmonies talk, I don't think any band really topped the Beach Boys in that regard.
|

Good call. Harmony-wise, the Beach Boys were really in a league of their own. |
Wow I just found an awesome song that I didn't even know I had on my computer..
NP: Buffalo Springfield- For What it's Worth |
I listen to a lot of Buffalo Springfield considering I only have Retrospective.
|
Speaking of Buffalo Springfield and harmonies. They have great harmonies. I'll love their debut album.
|
I've Always thought CSNY had the best harmonies.
|
Yeah, same.
Hey do you know about that Beatles Tribute band "Rain" is going to the JLC? I might go. |
Can't believe we missed them.
|
Yeah, same.
Hey do you know about that Beatles Tribute band "Rain" is going to the JLC? I might go.
I've heard some stuff about it, not much though. I went and saw robert plant though, it was a great show man, you should've been there. |
Yeah, I should of. That was weak on my part.
|
Indeed, it was. Shame on you.
|
The Shins <3
Should be checked out. |
The Shins <3
Should be checked out.
Do ya have a Link. One Classic Band I've been getting into is Genesis, I have their 'Selling England by the pound' album, and I have a Live Tribute album, which is very good. |

http://www.purevolume.com/theshins I don't know what genre they are, but they sounded like classic rock to me. |
the shins? theyre definitely alt/indie. theyre first cd didnt even come out until like, 2001. still a good band though.
|
Switching gears now... Does anybody have plans to attend the four posted Aerosmith tour dates? I would go but it is too far away from me (other side of country) but I will go if they hit the west coast USA.
im goign to the philly one....i think there all sold out now though. |
still a good band though.
123'd.
Also, to catch up on the vocal harmonies talk, I don't think any band really topped the Beach Boys in that regard.
Mhmm. Especially in Sloop John B. |
All I can say is thank God that Mark Knopfler played on Slow Train Coming because that album was in dire (haha get it!..a joke) need of something to spice it up. No offense to Dylan, they are good songs, but I think it would have been a little boring without Knopfler's playing. And he's a **** good guitarist. He's got the perfect mix of technical ability, speed, and creativity. He can write amazing riffs/solos/songs and he makes such great use of different chord voicings. I kinda wanna go listen to Brother in Arms...I think that's the only album I have by the Dire Straits (that's the name of the album right? My brain is running so low right now..)
Last night we were going to frosh, and there were cops hiding and pulling everyone over and going through their entire vehicles. They took our hundred dollar glass bong, my friends pipe (he's had that pipe for over three years now, and he's probably smoked up with it a few times a day since he got it), they found our alcohol but I told him I was 19 and since it wasn't opened he let it go....and he didnt' find our weed because I hid it in a tape cassette case (the perfect hiding spot, trust me) and put it in the glove compartment with like 30 other tapes. My one friend had to go to the back of the guys cop car...and then eventually he just let us go after taking our pipe and bong (the bastard). Funny thing though, my friend has been in the back of a cop car 7 times in his life, and I haven't been once. The cops always decide to take him to the back. |

Now that I think of it, I should lisen to Mark Knopfler a lot more. I think I actually have some more albums with him...I'm not sure if they're Dire Straits albums or his solo albums, I'm gonna go check right now! He's a super amazing guitarist. He's crafted his style from so many different types of music that his guitar playing is literally perfect for any mood you're in, or any style of music you listen to. He's crossed more genres thank frickin....Ok..I was gonna say Shaquille Oniel but I figure I shouldn't just say the first name that pops into my head. Can anyone name some more collaborations Mark Knopfler has done with any musicians that you guys would think I'd like? Name anything, dont' worry about me liking it, I probably will. edit- I wish I wasn't such a spelling and grammar nazi...I spend like ten minutes typing up and then usually editing my posts. I didn't even remember that I was going to check to see what other albums I had with Knopfler by the time I finished my post. And I always end up making such long posts, I hope most of you actually even read my posts...but I have one more topic to touch upon. The Shins. My guitar teacher actually got me into them, he told me they'd be great to teach my students because I always give them like Classic Rock songs and some of them say they want new music (ungrateful bastards) so I decided to write out the chord charts for like 12 of their songs...and they are a really good band. Very interesting indeed...I like listening to them a lot, and they're songs are actually very educational for beginner guitarists to learn. They use a lot of interesting chord progressions, and some of their songs are pretty trippy. |

First thing that pops into my head...he produced Tina Turner's comeback album. |

That's some obscure info right there! What was her album called? Did he play on it? How on Earth did you know that too? |
Post 6,000 :chug:
I thought it'd be appropriate to do it in my favorite thread on MX :) So Mark Knopfler is very good at guitar. Also, On The Beach continues to be awesome. |

I believe it's called Private Dancer. He produced it. My parents are fans. |

I can't stop listening to QMS's s/t. It is just so good, I want to learn to play all of the songs but I can never find more than three on the internet
Needless to say I have already memorized Dino's song and figured out the bass part :p and the vocals on "It's Been Too Long" are really nice, all of them are, really |
Has anyone heard Joni Mitchell's cover of Blackbird? I think it's pretty darn good.
|
I'd really like to heard that. Do you have it on your computer?
|
Phil Lesh is coming to Pittsburgh! w00t!11!!!
I'm so fucking there! EDIT: Hot Tuna, SCI, DTB, and Gov't Mule are also possibilities in the near future :D I need to do some sweet talking to daddy. |
Allman Brothers on the 30th, the Stones on the 8th here. Haven't gotten tickets to either, but I'm not especially worried about either getting sold out. Plus, with my family's "day-of" schedule, I could end up getting stuck with tickets I can't use and have to give them away. If I can, I'll go.

What are the Scorpians considered? I know they're older but are they considered classic rock? I like there songs "No one like you" and "Rock me like a hurricane". I also like Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix, etc. I do think that more people around the teenage...age.... are liking Classic Rock more. A lot of people like that Greenday crap though. I can't stand rap music. I really dont consider that even music.
Just out of curiosity (sp), does anyone like Tenacious D? I think they are decently skilled guitarist (Jack Black), compared to other people *cough* greenday *sneeze* |

Unfortunately, no. I always hear it on the radio or something. |

Hey at least his post was more than two lines, the first line consisting of quoting the first post, the second saying "good charlette sux!!1 led zepplin rulz!11" It actually wasn't a bad post for a noob. |
yeah but he made the "rap isn't music!1!!!" comment, and needlessly derided Green Day.
Then he went on to praise the Scorpions and Led Zeppelin. In other words he made the "quote the first post and talk aboug how much AC/DC rules and Good Charlotte sucks" post, only with more words. np: Common - Be |
Hey at least his post was more than two lines, the first line consisting of quoting the first post, the second saying "good charlette sux!!1 led zepplin rulz!11"
It actually wasn't a bad post for a noob.
Well Greenday really does suck, I don't really know too much about Good Charlette. I've heard they aren't good. Led Zepplin (Jimmy Paige) is probably one of the greatest guitarist ever. I see what you saying though. I don't see how my first line quoted the first post. I was asking a question. I don't know I am a noob though :thumb: EDIT: I said I can't stand rap music, and that I don't consider it music. Some people say that being gay is ok...some people say it isn't....Incase you haven't noticed....its an opinion. |
Well, rap really isn't music in the traditional sense, and Green Day isn't all that great (but they don't suck, at least they can play together and put on a good performance) so he wasn't all that wrong, just stupid, ignorant, and immature :thumb:
