BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 09-19-2005 10:01 PM
Is it a big one? It would suck if the city where a lot of the evacuees from New Orleans are got hit bad.
A storm's on the brew! I don't care this place needs rain for shrooms even if it's a hurricane! Poor evacuees there's like 80 new students at my school I wounder where they're going to go. My mom just bought like 100 bottles of water so if it comes to us we're apprently going to ride it out. Kinda worrys me because they're saying this one could be big. :-/

Rush's vocals suck balls.

"Hummingbird" is my favorite Wilco song and I would have loved to see them live.

Illmatic 09-19-2005 10:06 PM

The few relatives that I have in New Orleans (and there are only like, three) have just given up and decided to stay in Chicago :-\

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 09-19-2005 10:30 PM

I dislike most Prog. I can't stand Yes, Rush, Camel or any prog band besides the Floyd for that matter. Maybe I'm not going in depth enough. :-/

Electric Ladyland is amazing never really realized how awsome it really was until today. The guitar is sooo amazing on this album it's incredible. He turns Dylan's color blind "All Along the Watchtower" and turns it into a kaleidoscope(sp?) of vivid colors I can't describe, he plays the wah wah as if it were an instrument all to itself and the 2 long peices are simply amazing! This is easily his most creative album too and when people talk about how visionary of a guitarist he was they were thinking of this album the most. Simply incredible!

PinkFreud 09-19-2005 10:35 PM

yeah, electric ladyland is what hendrix fans usually point out as his high mark, and an indication of the potential he had, and the direction he would have gone with had he lived. i love it.

and for people who say that he wasnt technically skilled, make them listen to "come on (part 2)". jaw dropping playing.

Illmatic 09-19-2005 11:01 PM

As someone who prefers Band Of Gypsies ( ), I still have to say I am a very big fan of Electric Ladyland.

There is also some stuff on Electric Ladyland ("Rainy Day, Dream Away", "Still Raining, Still Dreamin", "(Have You Ever Been To) Electric Ladyland") that shows that he was trying to branch off from rock

PinkFreud 09-19-2005 11:03 PM

right! and band of gypsies showed him going towards a more soul/r&b sound.

Leper 09-19-2005 11:04 PM

I like Geddy Lee's vocals. Obviously not the greatest singer by any stretch, but I think his voice blends well with Rush's, usually, bass driven sound.

Illmatic 09-19-2005 11:08 PM
right! and band of gypsies showed him going towards a more soul/r&b sound.
Exactly. It's a bit of a cliche, but I really would want to see where he would go with the RnB/soul/jazz fusion thing.

Leper 09-19-2005 11:39 PM

Unfortunately we will never know :upset:. I was listening to my local CR station the other day, and one of the DJ's was interviewing one of the members of the Animals who apparently was really good friends with Hendrix. It was really interesting hearing about Hendrix's last days. I didn't want to leave, and consiquently, was almost late for work.

me too. i think he wouldve progressed kind of like jeff beck. constantly updating his sound and moving with the times. he was a hip cat.

edit: the bassist for the animals, chas chandler, was hendrix's manager early on. that might have been who it was.

That could've been it...who were the other members of the Animals. If you list his name I'll probably remember who it was.

Leper 09-20-2005 12:33 AM

Oh man, it was Eric Burdon! If I had scrolled up to see Jacaranda's post a while ago it would've saved a lot of time. And speaking of old posts, I really hope Neil's new album actually comes out tomorrow.

Ulysses 09-20-2005 03:39 AM
What does everyone think of The Animals? I learned "House Of The Rising Sun" for guitar class about two years ago and remembered that song was pretty darn cool.
Yeah I like the Animals sound, one of the pivotal british invasion bands of the mid 60's. I read Eric Burdon's biography, a very interesting read. He was in a large array of groups as you probably know including the funk-esque outfit Eric Burdon & War which he formed whilst in California. I'm interested to hear their sound but am yet to get a hold of any of their music, does anyone have any Eric Burdon & War albums?

Jacaranda 09-20-2005 07:04 AM

I've only heard Spill the Wine which is a great song so I suppose I should listen to a whole album. Off to Slsk!

I think I should do a FA on the Tragically Hip. What does everyone think of them?

temporary 09-20-2005 01:26 PM
I think I should do a FA on the Tragically Hip. What does everyone think of them?
I'm not really familiar with them, what kind of music did they play?

Walrus Gumboot 09-20-2005 01:30 PM
I think I should do a FA on the Tragically Hip. What does everyone think of them?
I don't know much about them at all, and if you did an FA on them, I would learn more about them

Broken Arrow 09-20-2005 01:52 PM

I like Tragically Hip, I hate to say it but "New Orleans is Sinking" is my favourite song by them.

Neil's album comes out September 27, downloaded the leak but I decided not to listen to it though. I've heard one of the singles and "When God Made Me" though.

Firecracker 09-20-2005 01:55 PM

Can someone recommend me some prog/classic rock.
I listen to: Rush, Yes, amongst others.
Would be great thanks. :thumb:

Broken Arrow 09-20-2005 01:56 PM

Emerson Lake and Palmer, some Pink Floyd, King Crimson.

All off the top of my head, I'm not really a huge prog fan though.

ELP, King Crimson

Broken Arrow 09-20-2005 01:59 PM
ELP, King Crimson
Haha, you were beat!!

What about Traffic? Don't they have some more prog based albums?

Firecracker 09-20-2005 02:02 PM
Emerson Lake and Palmer, some Pink Floyd, King Crimson.

Right on. :thumb:
Merci Beaucoup.

JonG 09-20-2005 02:03 PM

ELP is one of my favorite Prog Rock bands, if you want some of their stuff either get their s/t, Brain Salad Surgery or Tarkus.

Lunch 09-20-2005 02:05 PM

John Barleycorn Must Die and The Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys are Traffic's "proggish" albums.

And good albums at that.

BlackDeathMetalJazz or really ANYTHING else please- 09-20-2005 02:34 PM

It's funny that Prog just got brought up because my friend just gave me a burned copy of In the Court of the Crimson King. The only song that I've heard by them is "21st Centery Schizoid Man" and I wasn't too crazy about it. I just listined to 2 more songs off it and so far it's pretty good but I still need to listin to more. I await judgement on it til' I get a few more proper listins in. :)
If Houston get Hurricane'd, make sure you e-mail us sometime so we know you're not dead
Will do. ;)

jpj 09-20-2005 02:34 PM

Don't forget Yes and Rush. For some heavier-ish prog check out Liquid Tension Experiment.

EDIT: Oh, you already listen to them, woops

I didn't really like ITCOTCK other than 21st Century Schizoid Man, which is just pure genius.

Yea, I just rediscovered how amazing the album is. Some of the songs are bliss, and his background playing is astounding.

/late

EDIT: ITCOTCK is a great album. I prefer the softer songs, like I Talk To The Wind, and Moondream. I would say Epitaph is my favorite on the album, though.

Walrus Gumboot 09-20-2005 03:13 PM
ELP is one of my favorite Prog Rock bands, if you want some of their stuff either get their s/t, Brain Salad Surgery or Tarkus.
King Crimson and ELP have all been mentioned, but Genesis is also great. Dream Theater is increadable, although they're music is a lot heavier than other prog bands.

rockinbass17 09-20-2005 03:31 PM
I would say Epitaph is my favorite on the album, though.
It's a very dark, pretty song. Much different than the electronic 21stCSM type stuff.
I think my favortie album of their's might be Red.

thickasabrick 09-20-2005 03:46 PM

I've also got Trilogy by ELP and it's really great.

I absolutely love the song For The Turnstiles by Neil Young.

edit- I really like the Tragically Hip. I don't have any of their albums, but they are so popular here on the radio and in the media (they always end up in the newspaper) because they are Canadian. They've got some really great songs, and they are a pretty talented band.

Broken Arrow 09-20-2005 05:25 PM

Did you get in in my email or did you aslready have that album?

DeusExMachina 09-20-2005 05:27 PM

Are King Crimson really all that great? I have Discipline, and it's decent, but I'm not a huge fan.

Broken Arrow 09-20-2005 05:28 PM

Yeah I'm not a big fan of theirs either.

BludgeonySteve 09-20-2005 05:36 PM

I'm not a BIG fan. I do like their music though.
